Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Hey guys, For the most part everyone is doing great with their training and staying very consistent. During this time of the year that is what is most important, getting the body ready to handle the stresses of a regular tri season. As for me I start my tri training today, Day 1. Only a swim and I hate swimming. Is everyone approaching the start of their regualr season program, if you are not in it yet? |

Regular 109 Rehab with Brittney | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin I took your earlier advice, and am resetting my olympic plan today as this would then lead directly into Olympic race in April (I didn't realize you could import a plan over a plan that was already imported Probably a good thing too, because I didn't get a whole lot of work outs in this weekend. I strained my calf running, and have been alittle under the weather so I just punted this weekend. So day 1 starts for realz today! And by the way, this sport is expensive! I just bought a used Garmin 301, some zipps (paid $1100, alot more than my budgeted $600), and a wetsuit. I think I've got everything I need now though. |

While I am totally bummed, the Packers got severely outplayed by the Giants. Manning was the better QB and the rest of their team played great football. We just didn't have it together from the onset. The good news is I will be in Hawaii over the SuperBowl. At least I have that to look forward to. |

The Pack killed themselves by practicing inside w/ frozen footballs all week. Nothing compares to actually getting into the elements, if only for a few minutes. Anyway, LETS GO GIANTS. |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Matt I went to a bike seminar tonight. The speakers own a bike fitting studio in Madison and have a very good reputation in the industry. They actually dissuaded people from using a tri or TT bike for racing in hilly areas like Madison. They said that a road bike was actually better suited for this terrain and that you could get more power using one. What do you think of that advice? Learned a lot more about wheels, gearing, saddles, etc. which was very beneficial. I finally feel like I am getting somewhere in bike education. Suzy

Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Hey Suzy, It is really personal preference. Some people find it better to be at a shallow angle while some ride steeper. I am kind of in between, Cervelo is too aggressive and with Orbea I ride with the steeper angle. Some people will tell you that with a road bike you are using more hamstring which hurts running. Tri bikes are steeper to engage your quads more, leaving your hammy's somewhat relaxed. It really is personal preference. The angles of your body should not really change much between a tri and a road bike with good fits. If you think of your body as a 90 degree angle on a road bike, now take that same 90 degree body and just rotate it forward. Not much of a change except for what muscles are engaged. It is tough to explain. I will try to write something up that goes a little more into detail, but the bottom line is that it is personal choice. If you are a good climber a tri bike in TT conditions would no doubt be faster. If you are not a good climber than a road bike would help ease the tension. |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Here is the response I received from Mike Ricci, one of the coaches in the Gold Members forum. Now I am more perplexed that ever. I think I am going to spend '08 in my road bike since I will only be doing short distances and ponder it for a while. You have try out both bikes, but for the most part a tri bike is going to be better suited to helping you run off the bike. A tri bike should be comfortable and you should be able to climb with it - I usually sit back on the saddle. I would look at what type of terrain you do your training on (flat or hilly) and what type of racing you'll be doing. That would determine 90% of it for me. Tri bikes have come a long way. I did a 22 mile climb last year, once on my road bike, once on my tri bike. My time was faster on the tri bike at the same number of watts (think energy output). So, that tells you that the tri bikes are just as good climbing as road bikes are. |

Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin That is kind of what I was trying to say. As long as you are comfortable you should be fine either way. Rich Strauss has said that when climbing, stay Aero bc this will keep your HR in check. You cant really grind the pedals in the aero position, you naturally pedal with more consistency. I did IMLP and Endurasport Harriman 1/2 iron on my tri bike. IMLP is hilly and Harriman is 4x14 mile loop with 1500 ft of climbing per loop. http://genesisadventures.com/Bike%20Course%20Profile.JPG |

Veteran 269 Denver CO | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Does anyone work with a coach? With the Escape coming up and my first HIM I was thinking on hiring one. I am just having a hard time justifying the money. I am not a topper in my AG and $130 up to $200 a month is a sweet piece of change for me. What are your experiences? |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin I have used a running coach for the last two years. He has taken me from a mid-packer with dreams of become a Boston qualifier to an age grouper who qualified for Boston with 10 minutes to spare. If you find a good one, they can help you develop a plan, modify it based on your results, share insight about fueling and many other things. IMO, they are well worth it if you are serious and can afford it. The key is finding the right coach. My first was too busy with other elites and did not provide a plan suited to me as an individual so it was not a good fit. Shop around.

Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Hey Bert, there are a ton of well respected coaches in your area but like Suzy said you have to find the right one for you. I used Mark Allen Online for IMLP and have to say that it was ok, not great, but it was the right price. I cannot afford a live coach so I thought this was the next best thing but I dont really think his philosophy worked for me. D3 is right in your area and he's the BT coach. Why not talk to them, maybe they can work with you and work with a price. If the coach is right for you, Im sure it will pay off huge in the long run. |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Hey Bert I should have mentioned one other thing, my running coach is not local. I interact with him via email and sometimes by phone, especially for race planning. The reason I bring it up is if you are in need of advice on form and technique it may make more sense to have someone local. Personally, if I were to get a tri coach I would probably go local. I need more hands on guidance regarding biking and think it could be beneficial, but that is just me. Suzy |

Veteran 269 Denver CO | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Thanks for the tips on the coaching, I talked to Mike in D3 several times no luck there. I am talking to a couple of local coaches and am also considering a Tri club that has a coach. What $$ amount is reasonable? Maybe I am just too cheap. I would like a customized plan and some consultation (email is probably fine) once a week or so. I was hoping not to spend more than $100 a month, am I dreaming here? |

Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin $100/ month may be dreaming a bit, esp for hands on. At least in NY... the going rate for coaches is up there a bit higher than that. What about www.endurancenation.us Rich Strauss from crucible fitness runs this and its seems to be a good resource with a lot of different packages offered. Check them out as they are reasonable and well known throughout the industry. I am just going "cookie cutter" this year with free online plans from BT or other sites that offer some. There are a lot of people who use coaches and/or are coaches so you might find out more info about cost and availability. Suzy |

We had meetings from 8 am until 10 pm so I was happy to get in a short run here and there. Now I need to get back on track and see how I feel today. |

I have two candidates for now, both I know from BT actually. I am trying justify the $125 a month for myself. I do have the feeling that my current mix of winter maintenance and marathon plans is too heavy for me. Also the mind is just on the training for now. I have been struggling this year to get consistent. |

Regular 109 Rehab with Brittney | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Don't we all Well, I've been laying off the running for the past couple of weeks because of a strained calf. It tightened up on me about two weeks ago, then got really bad playing soccer over the weekend. So I've been substituting biking for my running until this clears up. On another note, I got my new wheels. I ordered some used 2006 Zipp 404s off of ebay. More than I was planning on spending $1100, but they look sweet. Once I get them on my bike, I'll post some pictures |

Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Hey guys, I hope everybody's training has been going on as planned. Sorry I havnt been posting much but I have been checking out your blogs. Consistency is key, always remember that. Did everyone watch the Super Bowl. Luckily I got out of working the parade thanks to a court appearance. I wanted nothing to do with 13 hours on my feet. My wife is extremely happy bc shes a huge Giants fan, Im happy bc a NY team won, but my heart lies with the...dare I say... JETS. Anyway, I was thinking about this and I have an idea/goal for the newbies on this board. Try to sign up for a stand alone running race or two now, early in the season. Try and gage your fitness a bit and it will help keep you motivated. Bert has the idea with the Chilly Cheeks series. Just about every area starts running races this time of year. Suzy, Your running is great and your fitness level is top notch, just keep plugging away the laps. Linda, You are kind of in the middle of the season, stay motivated and consistent and crush the competition. |

Do you have any questions regarding them, OR any tips or secrets that you do? I just heard on a podcast that it is actually faster to strip the wetsuit right away, not at transition so Im going to try that next time. What do you guys do.
