Subject: RE: apw0397's group - CLOSEDcharleston - 2008-01-10 8:28 AM Question: How early in the game do I need to start practicing bricks? Should I save this until I have some real running legs under me, or go ahead and start doing little baby bricks on the weekends? You can try a half mile or so now after your next ride if you want to just see what it feels like. You'll be amazed the first time you do one. It's an indescribable feeling that you will have in your legs. Jello legs, silly legs, I've heard lots of things. You just have to feel it to understand it. The more you do them, the more you get used to them. And the more you do them, they will feel more normal. But you also need to recover more. If you practice bricks early, make sure you force yourself to run them slow. You'll be tempted to go all out on them. Remember that you are really doing two separate workouts when you do a brick, so pace yourself and both and allow plenty of recovery. For my IM I did all of 1 brick in training besides races. For my half in April I am planning on 2 or 3 of them plus one race. 4 weeks out from my race I am doing a 3 hour ride (approximate bike distance/time) and a 1 hour run (not as far as the race distance, but far enough to get a feeling for how it will be). Then 3 weeks out I'll do a 2 hour ride and 30 minute brick. Just make sure you don't go all out on bricks. Watch your HR, pace, or breathing. Make sure you stay comfortable (Zone 2 or lower if by HR). |
