Besides, I got my shoelace stuck in the crank during my first ti last year and had to stop and unwind it. I am lucky I didn't crash. I like that last part. I'm a really very fearless person.

Heh. No laces in bike shoes.

longhorntd - 2008-01-07 11:17 PM Sorry guys, been MIA due to some traveling. I'm still working with a PT to iron out all the leg issues, so it looks like a lot of swimming for me over the next couple days. Goal this week is to hit a masters session and swim 5000m.

What kind of leg issues are you having?

5K in one swim session? Or in 2? Or 3?

jjsbu22 - 2008-01-08 7:49 AM I'm looking to get an extra run in this week on Thursday and up the intensity on the stationary bike. It has been 70 degrees here in the DC area for the last two days, so that has me itching to get to my LBS and get the modifications done to my MB. Need to get that HR monitor soon too. I have to say, I've played hockey and lacrosse which requires a lot of equipment, but this sport is the most expensive of the lot - even if you don't need a bike. Also want to focus on my stroke in the pool as opposed to just getting laps in. I can hold a 15-17 stroke count (per 25 meters) during the first 100 meters of any set distance (<70 strokes/100 meters) but then the wheels fall off and I'm around 18-21 for the second 100 meters of a 200-500 meter rep.

Yeah, it can get very expensive if you let it. I try to space out my purchases. Got a Garmin in Sep 06, new bike in March, aero helmet in Sep. etc. If you buy everything all at once, you'll go broke. Start slow. Get the basics. Then work your way up. Just like you don't do an Ironman for your first race.

On the stroke count issue, as you get more and more fit, you'll see your stroke count be more consistent. I find that when I am trying to go fast, my SC is too high. When I force myself to go (what feels) slower, I can get my SC back where it needs to be and I don't sacrifice too much speed. It's a fine line that I still haven't mastered.

charleston - 2008-01-08 8:36 AM I started a new high tech training plan for my run this week. I generally run through a very large development, so each time I go out, I do not turn around until I reach one more street on the left hand side. Very innovative I know, hopefully I will not forget the name of the street signs.

Nothing wrong with that. Make sure every 4th week you taper down 40% (or 4 streets?) to let your body recover.

Humpday check! How are we doing this week?

The weather here is killing me. 78 on Sunday, 20something this morning. Really screwed up my LT test this morning. I couldn't get my legs to go today.

It's in the 60s here in NJ but rainy and windy. I'm thinking of doing a long run over lunch but don't know if I should do it outside or on the treadmill (boooring). Going to try to get in a swim session tomorrow...

Unless it's raining buckets I would do it outside. I can't imagine a long run on the treadmill.

That brings up a random question. What is everyone's longest treadmill run? The longest I've ever made it is 35 minutes before the monotony took over. If I had a radio or MP3 player, that might have helped.

35 minutes is about right for me as a max on the TM...I just have been getting spoiled with the--seemingly--easier runs the TM provides.

I'm not sure what I'd do without my iPod during any run and especially on the stationary bike for an hour - which I know is habit I need to get out of before a race.

I just did an hour and a half today but 2 hours on the treadmill is my record from several weeks ago. (There were snow outside and I was desperate. Today's excuse was my knees are sore from the interval run earlier in the week so I figured the treadmill is softer than blacktop.) I have since bought a pair of Yaktrax and am in the market for a pair of waterproof running shoes so I can run in the snow...any recommendations?

Does anyone else get hell when someone looks over your shoulder when you are in this thread. Because of all of apw0397's postings they think I'm on some Gay Lover's blog. What's up with that Avatar??

My longest treadmill run is 10 miles. I will comfortably run up to an hour, then I'm only there bc I really have to be to get my run in. That's why I like my little work gym...nobody bugs me for being on there forever. In fact, some people will offer me the better treadmill...

No more 70 degrees in DC, it's cold today.

10 miles! Wow. That takes some serious mental toughness. I'm impressed.

Question: How early in the game do I need to start practicing bricks? Should I save this until I have some real running legs under me, or go ahead and start doing little baby bricks on the weekends?

You can try a half mile or so now after your next ride if you want to just see what it feels like. You'll be amazed the first time you do one. It's an indescribable feeling that you will have in your legs. Jello legs, silly legs, I've heard lots of things. You just have to feel it to understand it.

The more you do them, the more you get used to them. And the more you do them, they will feel more normal. But you also need to recover more.

If you practice bricks early, make sure you force yourself to run them slow. You'll be tempted to go all out on them. Remember that you are really doing two separate workouts when you do a brick, so pace yourself and both and allow plenty of recovery.

For my IM I did all of 1 brick in training besides races. For my half in April I am planning on 2 or 3 of them plus one race. 4 weeks out from my race I am doing a 3 hour ride (approximate bike distance/time) and a 1 hour run (not as far as the race distance, but far enough to get a feeling for how it will be). Then 3 weeks out I'll do a 2 hour ride and 30 minute brick.

Just make sure you don't go all out on bricks. Watch your HR, pace, or breathing. Make sure you stay comfortable (Zone 2 or lower if by HR).

Happy Friday folks! Much needed rest day for me today. Think our swim coach tried to kill us yesterday.

What are the weekend plans?

Me - 2 hour ride Saturday, 5 mile tempo run and a short ride Sunday.
