Thanks!!!  I am counting the minutes to get off work so I can load up the car and drive down to the hotel and packet pick-up!  I am sooooo nervous and excited all at once.  I can't believe the time is here.  I keep trying to shut up the voices in my head telling me I should have ridden more, run more...you know all that garbage.  I am bursting with pride in myself for putting in the hard work that I have put in...I am super emotional.  Everytime someone wishes me good luck I get all teary eyed.  haha.  I will be sure to let you all know how it goes!

Enjoy your workouts this weekend!

I posted a question here last week and just realized I didn't introduce myself. Sorry.  My name is Christy and I'm training for a half in June.  It will be my first one.  I have done some sprints and oly and thought it would be fun to try a longer one.  I'm really excited and nervous.  And I have tons of questions.

My question of the day is, how does RPE translate to a HR percentage or HR zone?  I have a hard time judging RPE.  It's easier for me to have a HR zone.

Thanks.  Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Did my university's free student Biathlon today and came in 8th overall.  3mi on the track (21:20) and 400m in the pool (7:00), and what I'm guessing was a 1:30 or so transition running from track to pool, losing shoes and watch, putting on swim goggles/cap, etc.  Overall time 29:49.  Not so bad but was a bit hung over and exhausted

Huge head rush jumping in the pool, wow!  Got kicked around by lots of people--good practice but i'm glad we swim first!

The plan called for a 1:15 bike and a :30 run (rpe2), but I ended up going for 1:50 on the bike (the wind really slowed me down).  Due to some time and exhaustion issues, I have ended up with a 1:30 run scheduled for tomorrow.  The plan originally had a rest day between these two sessions, but I needed that rest day sooner.

Do you modify your next day's session, or do you still try to hammer it out?  Supposed to be a rpe 3 run (week 11).

I just finished week 11 as scheduled and that ninety minute run definitely took a lot out of my legs. I may have pushed it more into the rpe 3-4 range, but I did have the advantage of the rest day. If you are tired (which it sounds like you may be), you may want to dial that run back to sixty minutes or so. How did the rest of your run week go? I skipped one of the short runs that week because I just cannot run that many days in a week. If you feel that you ran the other hour long runs well, then listen to your body and do what feels best. There are other long runs scheduled in future weeks so you will have the benefit of those later on in the plan.

I am battling some fatigue, which is why I switched the rest day.  I worry about skimping too much.  I am trying to figure out what is me being tired and me being lazy.  Maybe I will dial it back to 60 minutes today.

Back to training and loving it! New routine to stay injury free is longer warm-ups and cool downs, and post-workout stretching and ice baths :-)

Anyone hear from arkenic?

ME TOO!! after spending 3 months away taking care of my Mom, to be able to train feels like play not work.  I've been doing the same since I got injured last year as soon as I started running. (except for the ice baths LOL)

She finished in 6:46

Congrats! (and that's funny)

My first tri was an indoor sprint. Since I was nervous about the swim I started in the last waves and got hammered too! After my first 2 Oly's, I've learned that in OWS one can either be the hammer or the nail.  After a rough Chicago swim where I got elbowed in the face, I've decided, only when needed for survival, to become a hammerhead LOL

Pool running is its own brand of strangeness: I use a buoyancy belt and a bungee cord, attach myself to the side of the pool in the deep end, and run against that resistance in the water for however long I'm there. No shoes. Sometimes I do intervals, sometimes LSD...and a whole lot of HTFU sometimes because there's no music to distract me! I've found it hugely helpful for rehabbing a tendon injury for 3 months this winter-- since I've been able to add real running distance (slowly) to my training, I've noticed my cardio effort feels a LOT easier than it did. I know that last year, the woman who won the Chicago Marathon (sorry, I've forgotten her name) did almost all her training leading up to the race in the pool because of an injury-- so yeah, I think pool running can be beneficial!

PS: YAY for another Steelhead trainee! You go, girl!

Thanks! for the info. Where do I get that belt?

Hi,

Just wanted to introduce myself and ask few questions

I started my triathlon experience last season by doing two spring tris (both in September).  I am currently training for my first Oly (Philly Tri on June 26th).  I like swimming and I'm ok on the bike but I've never been good at running... so to help with the running portion of the oly I started training for Amica Iron Horse Half Marathon (on June 5).  After those two events I'm planning on doing couple more sprint tris and maybe one more oly, and I'm now seriously thinking about signing up to do my first HIM.  I know I might be jumping the gun a little, seeing as I haven't even done my first Olympic tri yet or the half marathon, but I figured I'm already training to swim 0.9 mi and training to run a half marathon why not sign up for a HIM?  I've looked at the Miami Man on November  13, has anyone here done it? Any thoughts?

Welcome Marta! IMHO, I don't think you're jumping the gun on doing a HIM in Nov with the plan you have in place right now for the other events. Just ensure those events fit well in your HIM training plan in terms of schedule/intensity/volume.  If you're not sure how to do this, consult one of the coaches here in BT and they can help you establish your season.

RE: the running, from another noobie who did it wrong last year and got injured, start slowly (more walking than running,) follow a structured plan, learn about common running injuries, and consult a coach to learn technique/posture. And always remember: there's no shame in walking! It's the only way to really take in the course and enjoy the scenery LOL

Good luck! :-)

Just finished Week 18 (or 3rd week) of the plan with my first ride outside since last October!! Weather in Edmonton area was sunny, but only 2C (13C with the wind chill) and a stiff southerly breeze. Felt great to be outside though!!! Cranked out 47.1km in 1 hr 33, trying out the new aerobars on my road bike for the first time!!! Definitely not like being on the trainer - lol!! Lot's of "nose leaking", my drinks got that cold they gave me a "brain freeze" twice and I quickly realised that I need shoe covers for my feet as my toes were white by the time I got in - maybe frost!!!! Still great feeling to get outside though.

Not looking forward to the long swim day tomorrow though!!!!!!!!!!! :-( LOL

I'm alive and well!  Laughing  All I can say is you guys are going to have so much fun!!!  Wow!  It was such an amazing experience!!!  I listened to trigal and decided not to kill myself, but rather enjoy the whole day.  With that in mind, I just cruised the swim.  That is one thing I would do differently.  I just didn't know what to expect out of the rest of the day and I didn't want to blow it in the first leg. haha.  I was shooting for 40-45 min and came up with 39.  I could have easily cut that time down.  My advice is go hard on the swim.  You don't need your arms on the bike anyway!

The bike was a beast.  My advice to all of you is to put in the miles on the bike.  It was a crazy hilly course and we had a horrible headwind, but all that would have been a heck of a lot easier if I had put more time in on the bike.  I gave it all I had and my time of 3:30 was exactly what I predicted, but I lost about 20 positions in my age group here.  Next time...no skipping out on those bike workouts!

The run was fairly flat.  Small hills here or there.  Physically I was okay, but mentally it was a bit tough.  I walked through the aid stations.  My pace was slow here, but I was happy with my effort.  My advice to all of you...don't listen to the voice in your head that says you are tired.  Your body has more left in it.  Dig deep.

The whole day was by far the best experience I have ever had racing.  Keep up the training everyone!  It is soooo worth it!  When you cross that finishline it feels so amazing!!
