144 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Well, I'm going to go for a nice 40 mile ride tomorrow and then all the work I've done in the past couple of weeks will be blow up. I am going on a 7 day cruise and will eat my weight in crap. The good news is I'll have a "state of the art work out area" I always laugh when I see that when you going anywhere on vacation. You get there and its a bench, a couple of dumb bells and a old stationary bike. |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED kaburns1214 - 2011-06-10 12:58 PM Rudedog55 - 2011-06-10 5:30 AM I started with the walk/run protocall, when i first did it it was more walk then run, when Jeff-y paced me for my first 10k+ distance race, i employed the walk run in a 10m on 1 min off pace, and seargent Jeff-y pushed my sorry carcass to do better or walk less. That was important, because your mind will tell you you can't do something your body can do. It took 2 years before i never stopped for a walk break in a Tri of any length, i always allowed my mind to convince me it was time to walk. Keep pushing the lengths of the Run vs Walk. Don't settle into one interval, mix them up, don't let the body get used to one thing, you will be amazed at how the body handles it, and then one day VIOLA, you won't stop for that walk.
With the "mixing it up" -- remember that one of the most efective ways to use run:walk intervals in a race is to time the intervals to aid stations. A common strategy is to "walk the aid stations" that way you make sure you're able to take in enough fluid and your walk break serves the dual purpose of helping to delay perepheral system failure whi;e making sure you're hydrated / getting in calories. Also walk breaks should be brisk. Its not a slow down, but a walk briskly to keep your HR as high as possible before you start running again. alberto salazaar did this in his boston mary win. i find it a huge benefit as drinking from a cup is hard while on the run. |

They are squeaking . . . it is kind of sad and emotional because they are really my first pair of real running shoes . . . the shoes that got me to my first 1/2 marathon and kept me going strong afterward!!! It is dorky to make them a shrine as a rememberance? |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Mapped out an 80 mile ride for this morning, heading out soon. And I've got a 30 minute t-run. I'm soooooo tired, just want to crawl back into bed. My husband is heading to the lake today, hoping I can sneak in a nap when I get back from riding. How many hours of sleep do you all get? I'm averaging about 5 to 6, and it's just not cutting it. |

Kids go down around 8, spend as much time as I can spending quality time with the wife before I pass out on the sofa (usually 9:30 or 10), alarm goes off at 4:20. So MAYBE 7 hours. |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Bout to head to the other side of HTown to hit the beach and check into the hotel for tomorrow's race. My daughters have never been to a beach so this could be fun. If you wonder why we live an hour from the coast and never have been to a beach google the beaches in Galveston. When you can see the oil tankers the water tends to not be so blue. If Kelly comes and races with me next April she'll be able to attest to said nastyness. |

HeyScott, my mother lives in Corpus CHristi, so I know how big Texas is, and a drive across town usually means 2 hours. Anyway, I was thinking, maybe just leaving earlier inthe morning to get to the race would be better than getting a hotel. It would save money for the new bike or Ironman Tx. Just a thought. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Hit the pool for the second day in a row, just trying to get a good form going. Slowly getting the breathing down. I need to learn to slow down. There were a couple girls in the pool, that were pretty much sprinting. Perfect form, from what I could tell. And they never stopped, they kept going and going. I was wondering when they were going to burn out!!! Never happened. Very impressive. |

Totally agreed. Not my idea. Cindy is insistant that she and my daughters be there to see us race. Which is really nice. Problem is to see the first waves go out at 7 she'd have to have a 4 and 2 year old out the door by 5:30. Plus we have a friend who works for Intercontinental Hotels and we get rooms for like $30 a pop. |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Did my first group ride with some serious riders. I had been hualing concrete and stuff up stairs from a demo project we got going yesterday and my legs were hammered. But I went anyway and it was a push to try and stay with them. Made it half way before they left me in the dust. I told them not to wait because I was slow and knew the route. Fun ride, did a little drafting and pushed myself harder than I would have riding alone. Four straight training days this week-feels good to be back hitting it again after a mental bonk on the training and some traveling. |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I don't have kids anymore either, but there are many nights when I fall asleep early (9-10) and then am wide awake about 1 and can't get back to sleep. Last night was sure one of those. I definitely suffer when I do not get at least 7 hours. I could not survive well with an average of 5, but it happens sometimes for days. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED So I am pretty sure that I let my running shoes get way too many miles on them, and they only had about 200-250. It is the only thing that explains my lower back and my knee being sore that last few days. I guess the run/walk could do it since it is new, but my God I wish I understood better when the shoes go out. Good thing I have a couple more pairs lying in wait for their turn . . . |

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I average about 5-6 hours of sleep. This last week was awful with the 2 year old, who just got her tonsils and adenoids out, did not sleep at all!! Uggh! She is still waking up 2-3 times a night screaming. I have def. felt more tired this week during my workouts - but my workouts were MY time and I didn't have a screaming child to care for! |
