Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Ok, a question about training plans? Right now, my plan is to keep up with my Iron Fit weekly schedule that I've been using: Mon-rest Tues-swim/run Wed-brick Thur-swim/ride Fri-swim/run Sat-long bike Sun-long run I'm just going to stick with modest lengths of time for training, and insert some intervals to work on speed. My question is for closer to the end of this year, what training plans have people used and liked? I'd love to get a coach, of course, but that's way out of my price range. Any thoughts or preferences? |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Jamie-I think your plan looks fine. However, I would take it easy for a couple of weeks. Sounds like you are feeling good but it takes your body time to recover from IM. I would hold off on any intensity for at least another week. Enjoy your workouts. Plenty of time to get ready for next year. I don't have any great suggestions on training plans. The Be Iron Fit plans are solid and you were certainly prepared heading into IM Louisville. I really have not used "canned" training plans but I'm sure there are some that are very good. Many have had good results with Endurance Nation. I believe they sell training plans and then have a higher level of service for more money as part of the "team". Coaching can be expensive. Jason and I use the same coach and he charges $200/month. Worth every penny and more based on my experience and progress with him. Really top notch! If you would like more info you can click on the link below or message me. But, there are other less expensive options. When I first decided to use a coach I went with Mike Plumb www.tripower.org Personalized training plans via email and I think he was around $85/month. I don't think more expensive is always better. There is a thread right now in Triathlon Talk seeking coaching recommendations so that may be worth a look.

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Michael and Randy-thanks for the tips. Right now, I'd just like to maintain what I've developed. I'm fine with sticking with my planned days and taking out the intervals, won't bother me at all. My only real goal right now is to not lose all the fitness I've developed. I'm not expecting to stay in IM-length condition throughout the Fall/Winter, but I also don't want to start out the New Year feeling like I'm back at square one. I have the Dam Tri to train toward at the end of this month, and I'm probably going to be doing another local race, that can either be an Olympic or a HIM-distance, in October. I haven't decided which to go with yet. |

Veteran 196 Greenville, SC | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Thanks for the kind words everyone! It's great to know you were all following along while we were racing. It's been a crazy week, but I've finally been able to write up my race report! Here it is: http://t.co/lWS3suNPZt Looking forward to a weekend of no work and no training! Although I'm still itching to get back into it, I know I need the rest. I had a hydration problem myself, so I appreciate the advice given so far! Thanks again everyone! |

Any thoughts or preferences? Jamie--I'm not expert, but I can tell you that I've taken off a full two weeks from SBR post IM and I think it was the wise choice both physically and mentally. I did walks the first week and then incorporated some yoga, hiking and other non SBR activities if I felt like it. I know everyone wants to keep the fitness they have, but I really don't think that is possible, injury and burn out are real possibilities. This year, I am doing MOO and then two days later heading on a two week safari where I guarantee you I will be doing no SBR. When I return, I know I will have lost some fitness, but gained a fresh perspective and enthusiasm for Fall running. |

Thank you! I have had a great year training and racing so far! I never imagined I would be doing this and having such a good time with it. Most days I really look forward to my training time. I am looking at 2014 as I know several of you have already mentioned. I have 6 or so tris picked out, one being an Olympic distance. I am also looking at a full marathon and another century ride or three. I have found that I like the relaxed long distance cycling with a group. And SAG's! I really appreciate the advice and encouragement I have received from this group! |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED I am a ginormous slacker! My training this week has been crap. Work responsibilities midweek were a major issue, but I'm feeling just mentally and physically drained. This was a recovery week, and I only worked out 3 days this week. I actually took a 4 hour nap this afternoon. I don't know if I just need a bit of rest, or if I'm just burned out. In order to get back on track, I've planned several of my workouts this week with friends so I can't bail. I just need a swift kick in the pants. 4 weeks from tomorrow is Augusta 70.3. I have an Oly distance race a week from today. Two weeks to taper, and I feel like I'm behind. Sadly, 6 weeks ago, I felt great where I was training wise. If anyone wants to give me a butt kicking, I would gladly appreciate the tough live. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Originally posted by slornow Jason-nice training! What are your thoughts on the compact cranks so far? I really like them. I can stay in the big ring (50) much longer/for bigger inclines before I have to go to the 34 ring. The 34 ring lets me spin up most hills fairly easily. It still is hard when the incline gets above 8% but much easier than it use to be (I think--I worry about placebo effect). Overall I would say they are a success. I don't find myself missing my old cranks at all. |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Yesterday I got my 15 seconds of fame! Outlaw was on TV. It was mostly commentary on the people at the front and profiles of a few people (including the sports presenter from the BBC radio2 breakfast show, who was doing it as his first ever triathlon), but they had a bunch of shots of the general competition and I made it on there twice. We also spotted 6 other people from our club (plus one who didn't compete this year, but did last year - archive footage!) and another friend who was racing, so not bad really. I got a whole load of different messages from friends who had seen it (including my mum, who seems very proud, even though she was there on the day!). My friend sent me this photo by text message, which made me laugh because it's probably my least flattering triathlon photo, in a history of quite unflattering triathlon photos. I guess you can tell why I wear a hat... (OutlawTV.JPG) Attachments ---------------- OutlawTV.JPG (413KB - 7 downloads) |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED And now I need some advice from the group. I've just got new shoes and pedals. I've finally upgraded from SPDs to look keo style pedals. I've tried them on the turbo a couple of times and the actual clipping and unclipping is fine (I've got them set pretty loose until I get used to them), but I haven't quite figured out who to get going before I'm clipped. With the SPDs they're catchy enough that I could start pedaling without being clipped in, but the new pedals and cleats are quite smooth and just slip off unless they're actually clipped. It feels like a really stupid thing to have to ask, having had cleats for 3 years, but they're very different! And in 5 days we leave for Paris, so I really don't want to embarrass myself in front of a bunch of strangers. |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Rachel, sorry, I can't help with the new pedals. I'm still using the same pair of Shimanos I got with my road bike. Here are my August numbers, including IMLou: Swim: 7h 41m 11s - 20899.28 M Bike: 26h 52m 40s - 424.13 Mi Run: 22h 52m 43s - 129.77 Mi I don't think I'll be seeing numbers like that again anytime in the near future! I did my first post-IM run today, just a short 30 minute run. It felt good, but my HR was definitely high, although it was pretty warm and sunny. I also had my first non-triathlon weekend in awhile: I went up to Tennessee and fished with a friend of mine for a couple days. It wasn't quite relaxing, we were running a raft through some pretty good rapids at times, but it was fun, and it was a nice change of pace. I've got my call with the Infinit nutritionist tomorrow afternoon, I'll let everyone know if I learn anything. I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day! |

And in 5 days we leave for Paris, so I really don't want to embarrass myself in front of a bunch of strangers. I've got Look Keo pedals. Here's my train of thought when getting into my pedals: 1. Make sure bike is in an easy gear. 2. Clip in right foot. 3. Pedal one footed (right foot only) until I have enough momentum that I can coast a few seconds and get my left foot clipped in. There've been a few time that I was in took big of a gear, and I had to just pedal with my left foot on top of the pedal. If you put the pedal behind your clip, you can do so without the shoe sliding off the top of the pedal. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Rachel, nice pic. With the look pedals, it is an acquired skill. You have to learn to catch the front of the pedal with the front of the cleat and you will click right in. It takes a while but eventually becomes second nature. Once one cleat is clicked in, the second one is pretty easy and even if you miss with the second cleat, having the first one attached lets your spin around and try it again. One thing I have found is that it is a good idea to leave the drive train in a pretty easy gear when you get off the bike. It seems to make the whole process easier for me when I get back on. |
