KelliD - 2009-05-04 3:36 PM Here's a question for everyone....what do your non-tri/non-active friends think about your involvement in tri's and more specifically the amount of time you put into training & things you sacrifice (ie social outings, drinking, etc) for training?

I ask bc I have a non-tri friend (who is also a good friend) that all of a sudden has gotten negative about my love of triathlon and annoyed at the time I put into training.  I thought I got the same vibe from this friend last summer, but told myself I was just blowing it out of proportion.  I sort of surprised bc I would think she knows how fulfilling this is to me & how important it is, and as a friend who be supportive.

The only thing that I have gotten is "You sit on that for an hour!!!!"

Most have gotten into the losing weigt thing and I even got one guy to do the Tri with me on the 5th. I havent had anyone give me negativity about it.

If you swam in the AM and are missing the smell in the afternoon just lick your hand and smell... Until a few showers later you are a lick n' sniff chlorine machine

Well it looks like we have our very own scratch and sniff Kelli. She comes in a variety of flavors. Chlorine (after swimming), alcohol (after drinking), and becarefull after those long run days in the summer...

And clearly, we know you've already tried this

Yep that's what happens when you swim in college and are bored in class without a newspaper... the swimmers try to figure out which body wash works the best and no we didn't find one

I thought I was being mean or crazy for thinking this, but this was actually one of the first thoughts (and then other ideas along the same line) that popped into my head.

evondo - 2009-05-04 4:54 PM There are some of my friends that don't understand and never will understand why I train like I do but they are generally supportive regardless.  My good friends are big believers in "whatever makes you happy go for it". I think when people aren't supportive that it's because they feel inadequate when they see their friend striving for something and they're not. Not saying your friend fits that description but just things I've noticed since starting this sport...

Sorry to hear about your friend not being very supportive Kelli.  My guess is she has always hidden these feelings about tris.  Now that you are training for the 70.3 your workouts are getting more intense/time consuming and she is not able to hang with you as much.  Does she enjoy doing one of the three sports?  Maybe she could run with you some?

I am sure deep down she just wants to spend more time with her girl!

Okay, the whole "lick and sniff" commentary had me practically in tears this morning.  Especially since, last night, I'm sitting on the couch and spilled a little water on me when my husband does a running divebomb down next to me.  So we're sitting there, I didn't bother wiping up the water, and he says, "Ew, something smells like a swimming pool".

He then proceeds to bury his face against my thigh (where the water spilled) and look at me all wide eyed and exclaim "It's YOU!"

Lol.  Nice.  The sexy smell of chlorine... nothing works better for setting the mood than that.

I get a lot of "What are you, crazy?" comments... and honestly, a lot of if I choose not to drink when we all go out.

I try to just ignore it as best I can, but honestly I am not the strongest at having a work/life balance.  Often times, when my training picks up, my friendships will suffer because of it.

Sorry, I know that's not helpful... just my two cents.

I started to get a little red in the face when reading this and was getting worried where it was going.

I will have to ask my wife about the smell. I have no sense of smell so I never know.

Thanks everyone for all of you input.  I can have a tendency to be bad about having a good training/life balance, and throwing myself fully into training.  So, I've been extra mindful about that and made an extra effort....like Fun-day Fridays.  I was explaining the situation to my mom last night, and I think she hit the nail on the head....I'm involved in soemthing that I absolutely love (which does take up a lot of my free time), have met some great friends through my running group & training, she's not involved in this, and is feeling left out.

Busy days at work suck.... I miss out on all the fun!  You guys have ran off with some great posts!    Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone!   At least one mexican beer for everyone on this day!   Except Nicole... she can't have just one!  Moderation there Floridian! Laughing lol!

Scratch and sniff... LMAO!  You can smell the chlorine the minute you walk onto the pool deck, and yes it stays with me all day and half of tomorrow... just about the time it begins to fade ~ It's Thursday morning and it starts all over again!

I know full well the lack of support by the Non-Tri/active ones in your life... from the wife to the friends.  Both of which, for me, are like rollercoasters... sometimes they are very supportive, other times (when training or racing impacts planned events) they are not.  I am becoming less and less flexible in my training sacrificies and it has impacted certain relationships.  Right now, IM is THE driving force in my life (I will modify training for the family, but friends ~ short of a dier emergency ~ will get the boot before training).  I can only hope that they understand ~ and if they are true friends, the typically do!
