Subject: RE: Newbz'z summer mentor group is FULL!!!!
So I had a great Friday.  My gf and I were headed out to pre-ride a course we're doing next week - it'll be her first tri.  On our way out, we're stopped on a bridge (cars in front of me stopping quickly due to a long back up).  Dodge Caravan behind me was, in her own words "looking out in the reservoir at a boat."  Needless to say, I saw her in my rear view, said something quickly like "she's not gonna stop!" (my gf thought I was joking), and she smashed us.  Guess where my bike rack is...on my trunk.  Everyone was fine, me, my gf, the lady behind us, and I hit the lady in front of us, who was 5 months preggers (that hit wasn't bad at all, barely scratches).  My P2C and my gf's brand new first ever road bike, didn't stand a chance.  Frame cracked in multiple places, all 4 wheels totally effed up, crank arms bent in, FD and RD smashed, seats bent, even my xlab was bent and a cage snapped.  My gf's rear wheel flew off her bike.  To top it all off, I went to get my gf's wheel out from under the caravan because she was gonna try to pull off the road and it was lodged under there.  When she tried to start it, I got sprayed all over my body, face, eyes, mouth with some fluid.  Just freaking awesome.  Oh, and my other baby, my MINI, is out of commission

Anyway, after some freaking out, talking to my mom (an insurance underwriter, so and expert on what I should do) I called around and found a shop with a P2C in my size.  Spent Saturday getting new everything.  Short story, 2010 Cervelo P2C, upgrade Mavic Ksyrium Elites (had my wheels from my roadie on there, better than the stock P2 wheels), new Adamo Road, new xlab and cages, new Keo Sprints, new/updated professional fit, and new car rack.  I will sleep well tonight.

We'll take care of my gf's bike tomorrow.  Its aluminium frame and its bent and dented, so I think that's totalled too.  Oh and did 20 break in miles after leaving the shop with my roommate...sweeeeeeeeeeeet   Seeing as i bought the original used and this is new, its a whole new and way more awesome bike (just about everything on there was used too, but is now new).  BIggest difference in the bike is Cervelo upgraded their brakes from the Cervelo branded ones to FSA ones, and it really makes a difference.

Didn't do more so I could get a long run in too and go big today.  Got back from 81 miles in the sweltering heat/humidity (95 degrees, and humid).  Awesome.  This guy knew his stuff on fit.  I was too cramped before and was getting sore in my shoulders and lower triceps.  Not anymore, did the 81 no problem.  Bike rides like a dream, no quirks/rattles of a used bike like my last one.  I tried for a 30 min brick, only made it 25 or so cause I was too hot and a wuss.  Had to resort to run/walk on the way back, a first for me.  Oh well.  I'm loving the new bike

Now that's a different way to upgrade.  I think I'm going to start hauling my bike on the rack behind my truck all the time and hope for a quick stop sometime.  I have a 1 year old road bike but I may be able to upgrade to a Tri bike with only a few bucks out of my own pocket.  LOL

Thanks everyone for the props.  The race went better than I expected for sure.  Now that I have 1 race under my belt the first time nerves should settle down and I should be able to focus better for the next race and hopefully make fewer mistakes.
As far as swimming like a fish, I was very surprised at my swim time!  I had heard that the wetsuit makes you faster but I had no way to be able to measure that without a race.  The avg. 1:24 100's is unreal to me.  I actually still think there was something wrong with the time or something.  I get extremely tired swimming 1:35's 10x100 with 20 sec. rests.  How could I have swam faster and not been winded?
The bike was another surprise!  A 20mph avg. for the distance with my HR where it was left me feeling better than I thought.  With the rolling hills that were there I wonder what it might have been on a flat course?
My run was kind of surprising too but I wanted to be faster there.  So my surprise was how slow I was and more that I could not make myself run any faster.  I mentally tried to get my legs to go faster but my body said "Un Uhh!!!"  I tried several times to get it into a higher gear but there was nothing left.

As I tell my daughter, who swims in school, "leave it all in the water," I think I took my own advice and left nothing for the end.  I am very pleased with my first Tri!!

Got back from a weekend of wedding and graduation.  Glad to be home....looks like everyone has been keeping busy.

JS....nice new bike.  I guess it turned out all right after all!  So that makes three of us in this group with the same bike!

Dirk,  way to go man.  Those are great times as far as I'm concerned.  My first race of the season is this weekend coming up.  Gotta rest up and get pumped for it!

Maybe I'm getting too into triathlons. Today, my boys were racing bikes and my four year old jumped off his bike and said, "Ok bike part is over, now it's time to run like in mommy's race."

HA! That's awesome.  If he keeps that attitude up, he'll be winning races in a couple years!

David, or any other swimmers out there,

I have a sprint on Saturday.  For the swim portion, the course is counterclockwise around two buoys and then home stretch, like a large rectangle where the two far buoys (which are both equidistant from shore) are probably 100m apart.  I probably have the ability to stay to the left at the start and jump on the fast people right out to the first buoy.  Ideally I would love to draft off one of them the entire time, but not sure if that's really feasible.  Is this a smart move, or should I do my normal, start from the far right and head straight at the buoy to avoid people/wasting energy?

I say go for it!  Get in the right pattern to be in position for a better race overall.  My only concern would be if there is a

legitimate concern with proper race etiquette.  I heard recently that an athlete shouldn't allow their competitor to pull the entire distance.  I guess this could be called good race planning but I don't know.  But def, as far as positioning, I would take the inside line if you think you can do it.

Yeah, that's a tough one.  I know that a bunch of these guys can outswim me.  I'm hesitant to purposely stay off someone's tail if I know the only way I could go that speed is if I was drafting.  Even if I tried to pull them, I doubt I could.

Glad everyone was okay from the accident.  I suppose it's a sweet way to upgrade.

Did the lady's car insurance basically tell you that you had the green light to rebuy everything?  Or did you purchase everything and now have to settle with the insurance company on what/how much they will reimburse you for?

You make me want to use my trunk mount rack more often...but knowing me, I'll use it and then back up into something and smash my bike at my own fault.

In terms of reimbursement, yeah, the driver's insurance will pay. Officer at the scene said she was at fault (the driver doing the rear endings is almost always, its pretty cut and dry) and she admitted she was looking out over the lake at a boat and when she looked back up we were stopped.  I didn't have time to wait for her insurance (they're just now taking statements), but I know they will pay.  In the meantime, if it takes awhile, I can absorb the $3800 hit or I bought supplemental insurance on my tri-related accessories which I can use.  Its got a $250 deductable, so I'll onlly be out that until the driver pays.  That covers everything and for any reason (I got it cause I was scared of crashing on a carbon frame and losing a lot).  So I was very comfortable going out and putting my money out there to get back in the game as quick as possible.  My mom underwrites insurance and also told me to go ahead.

I can salvage some stuff from the bike - cassette (although I can't remove the rear wheel yet, its wedged in there pretty good) and the cockpit seem to be ok, thought scratches to some and the levers were twisted.  My x-lab was bent pretty good and replaced, but I managed to straighten it back about 90% as good as new I'd say.  Pedals seemed fine, but the crank arm was bent completely in, so the shop said you can't trust it's integrity anymore, even if it seems ok.  Seat rails on my old Adamo were very slightly bent, but it is still mountable, i think.  Seatpost seems ok, but if the xlab was bent (and a cage snapped) it obviously took some torque and who knows.  My wheel were upgraded from the stock R500s to Mavic Kysrium Elites, but thats because I had the wheels from my roadie on there and they were most comprable (and in stock).

I guess the only thing that bothers me is that a lot of people say I got a sweet deal and i upgraded.  All things considered - I'm not sure I'd do it again (well, knowing everything worked out and all ok, maybe).  But I was still hit pretty hard, have no idea what's wrong with my car or how long it'll be gone, and once its been in an accident the resale is shot, so I get really screwed there.  Plus, there could just as easily been injuries.  My gf can't bend her head all the way to the left, she says its NBD, but she has no idea, it still hurts and it happened 3 days ago.  The stress of it sucks a lot.

ETA: Yeah, I guess I originally wrote like I was pretty happy with it all - and I am that I now have a new bike and stuff, but as I think about it more, and wonder about my car, it seems less like a good deal.  If it were just the bike, and not the car/potential for injury, then hells yeah, it was awesome.

Yeah, you're probably right.  If it was just the bike, then yes, it's a good way to upgrade because every insurance claim I have heard about buys you a brand new bike...not like how cars will only give you enough to repair or give you current blue book value if it's totalled.

And with the car fax reports, yeah, it sucks because your car is now on record as being damaged even if you do get it fixed.

I hope your gf heals up quickly.

Joe- Hope your gf is feeeling better.

To anyone interested, I posted some before & after pics of myself on the Team Skinny thread. Don't think I have to remind anyone that I've been fighting to get to my goal weight. You can see what I look like today & what I looked like in 2005 at my heaviest.

Thanks everyone, sorry for the rant...I was pretty stressed yesterday cause the other lady's insurance is just sitting around doing nothing.  My car's been parked at my gf's work (where its not supposed to be) since Friday and they don't seem to care that I need to know what to do with it.  Ok - enough of that, its not even tri related.

jpbis26 - I'm not sure how to say it better, but wow!  You look great!

Well...whatever it was...I'm convinced that I don't want to do another one anytime soon...and god forbid a 60 minute test...I'll wait for another 40k TT before I try one of those.

I tried to do a 90 minute ride with some short 250 watt bursts (2-3 minutes) on the trainer last night and it was a total failure.  My legs are still shot from the test on thursday and my 77 mile long ride on Saturday.  It didn't help that I spent most of Sunday afternoon/night drinking...so I wasn't 100% on that front either.  Only ended up doing 50 minutes of mainly recovery level effort.  We'll see how it goes tonight.
