I definitely notice a difference in my shoes as I put more miles on them.  I've found that I can only get about 300 miles out of a shoe, sometimes less depending on the model.  I log all miles on here and specify which shoes I wore, so I can see how many miles are on them.  As they approach 300 I'm purchasing a new pair and toss them when they reach 300.  Anything more and I end up injured somewhere - hips, knees, ankles, toes.

Ride was good today.  Tough mentally for the first half, physically hard the second half just because my legs were so tired.  Run was ok after too.  Felt like I could have run more, but followed the plan.

Saw a whole slew of road kill.  Mostly squirrels, one snake, and something that we never could figure out.  It looked like a pig, but I can't imagine there being pigs around here.  Didn't want to stop and inspect so I guess I'll never know.

Tomorrow's plan is an early OWS, then long run with a couple of friends.  Very hot and humid here, I hate it!

Today when I was riding I decided I need to try a different cassette.  I currently have a compact crank, and 12-25 cassette.  I'm ok with the 25, although a 27 might be nice to have for Wisconsin.  But it's the 12 that's not cutting it for me.  I'm constantly spinning out on rolling and slight declines, it's very frustrating.

If I swap out for an 11-27 I know I'll lose some middle gears.  But will I really notice?  Anyone have thoughts?

I have an 11-28 and compact.  I spin out at about 35 MPH.  Candidly, i am a wimp of a descender and anything over about 40 starts to scare the bejesus out of me.  (as Rudy will tell you i did get a 12-18 cassette but got the wrong derailleur so when he built my bike he had to swap in a different cassette).  I like the 11-28, particualrly in Connecticut where i basically am either going up or down.  the middle gears are basically only used on the trainer.

Kelly, Rudy an Shaun can give you much better guidence.

FWIW, i use an 11-26 on all my bikes, it does have a few gaps in the gearing, so sometimes i am spinning 5-7rpms too much or little, but i do a fair share of climbing as well as flats during training, so i need the wider cassette. I also run a 50/34 compact, and personally feel that everyone that does Tri's should be on a compact, not a standard.  If you have hills, an 11/26 or 11/27 should be good if you are decent enough on the bike, 12/28 if you are doing the HHH or tons of hills like a Rev3 Quassy race, or if you are weak at climbing. Those would get you by with good results in most cases, with my 11/26 i can pedal well into where i should not be pedaling in a race on big downhills, i have no problem going over 50mph, i hit 48.6 in Ridgefield last week!!

Artist - 2011-06-11 7:58 PM I don't have kids anymore either, but there are many nights when I fall asleep early (9-10) and then am wide awake about 1 and can't get back to sleep. Last night was sure one of those. I definitely suffer when I do not get at least 7 hours. I could not survive well with an average of 5, but it happens sometimes for days.

what did you do with them?

I let them grow up. They are in their 30's and I have grandkids ranging from 11-4 yrs

Worst. Swim. EVER. This morning. Rest of the race was great though. 21+ on the bike, 7:40ish mile splits, 2:30 swim splits. WTF??? Never found any open water. Sucked. 59th overall out of around 200

My sone Cole completed his first Tri this morning.  The Super Kids Tri was put on by Tri Mom Productions, and with 260 kids, was super organized.  It couldn't have went better.  The parents were not allowed in the pool area, it would have been too congested.  There were 19 waves, with the oldest starting first.  Cole wase wave 12.  It rained all morning, and didn't stop until the last kid finished.  Super proud of Cole. We got to see him run out of the pool building, into transition, and he handled it pretty well.  Was able to get his shirt and shoes on alone, and jogged out of tranistion with his bike.  He did great.  He had to swim 25 yds in the pool, bike 1 mile and run 1/2 mile.

He did a Tri before I did!!!!

We definitely have hills here, and I think they are my strength.  I'm good with the 25, but there are some climbs that I wish I had an easier gear.  For Wisconsin I'm thinking having a 27 might help save my legs for the run.  But mostly I want an 11 so I can actually pedal on some rollers and downhills.

Will I need a different chain if I make the switch, or will the chain I have for my 12-25 work?

Has anyone tried an oblong crank?  My husband thinks I should try one, but I know nothing about them and what the benefits are.

So after today I've pretty much decided I need to fix my swimming ASAP.  I can't afford lessons right now.  I could afford books, DVDs, etc.  Suggestions?  I know TI is out there and there are conflicting views, but it's not out of the question either.

I am by far no expert, and I am not a good or fast swimmer, but I did watch the free 8 part series on you tube about total immersion and feel I picked up some good tips -

Here is the link to the first one and it automatically brings up the next one at the end of the first -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97b6XIntfcc

Hope that helps a little - and its free! I hope someone else pops in with some good advice that I can use also!

It depends on the legnth of your chain.  When I swap in the 11-27 I can't use the biggest back cog when I'm in the big ring (this is the compromise I use instead of getting a longer chain).

Ran early this morning.  My legs felt so tired and heavy for some reason, and was off my normal pace by at least a minute or more.  with half mile to go, I felt a pull/cramp in the back of my left leg, directly behind the knee?  What is that?  Never felt it before, so I walked the rest of the way home.  It does not hurt now, so do you think it is just a tight muscle?  I will have to keep an eye on it.

Even if you can just get a video, I can give you a good idea on how to proceed.  If you have a really "long" and "forward" stroke to begin with TI may not be the answer.

Maybe.  Been thinking about paying for a swim analysis.
