Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Final update for May. On Wednesday I had a lesson in how not to do my nutrition and hydration on the bike. Got half way through my ride and my stomach just shut down. As a result I felt sick for the rest of the ride and about 24 hours afterwards... I know where I went wrong and should have seen it coming, but it was a valuable lesson. On the positive side I then went for another open water swim and started to feel relaxed for the first time this year. Hopefully if I stick with it I will be as comfortable in the wetsuit as in the pool. Congrats to Mitch for the well-earned win! I'm in for the June challenge. June will be the final push, with my taper starting at the beginning of July. - Mitch: S 9 / B 22 / R 21 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 52 ; 33:36'46" |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is anyone up for another weight loss challenge for June? I'm at what I'd like to be my long-term weight, but would like to try to get a little lower for IM and would appreciate the help from the group. |

I'm always game for a challenge - but I'm almost at goal weight - I'll play so I don't gain. |

But we REALLY REALLY need to make each other do the Sunday updates. If we don't post, I don't get sufficiently shamed to eat right. (Although I do have some additional motivation going for me now. My lovely wife just signed up for her first marathon - Twin Cities in October - which I am already signed up for. She is now on a jihad to remove all crappy food from our house and make sure we both eat better.) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I completed the Incline in 47:48. For my first time I was told that was great!!! Below is the Garmin link. I will be doing this once a week for the most part. Today I didn't run the entire Barr Trail back down so I won't count that section of the day either. I attached the link to that as well. I will tell you that climbing 1944ft in under 1 mile is an awesome workout and I am glad I live where I have access to this type of training. Since neither of my workouts would count toward the challenge I came home and ran another 37minutes. I hated to call today a rest day with all I did! I will update my logs and the forum later. I took some pics I'l post as well. Incline http://connect.garmin.com/activity/184362459 Barr Trail Decent http://connect.garmin.com/activity/184362484 Didn'T stop at the bottom...oops! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok I'm back! I did the Incline with Jennie this morning and that was pretty good. Definitely looking forward to doing that every once and a while. I got in a 4.04 mile run after work in 33:59 with an avg HR of 145. Last month was pathetic and demoralizing so I'm looking forward to getting back into it this month. I also got my early Father's Day present today....a new pair of Five Fingers. Definitely an interesting feeling wearing them. I'm not a big heel striker so hopefully it won't take me too long to work into running in them, but I'm going to be cautious so I don't jack up my feet. - MatthewS: S 1 / B 1 / R 0/ Rest Days 0 ; Total = 2 ; 01:37'00" Edited by scottputnam 2012-06-01 9:00 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ernesto et al. I have my next race (sprint distance) on the 17. What should I do for taper? I am planning to take a rest day the day before the race, but other than that: 1) Do you normally taper before a sprint distance (I have only done 2 other tris, all sprint) So many questions, so little time... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hola amigos, ready for the June challenge (cannot believe we are already in June). Rachel, we learn from the good and the bad and glad this happened still with plenty of time until your IM! Scott, June will definitely be a better month for you + enjoy your new shoes! Jackieeee, where are you and how did your race go??? Today, 1 hr run (felt good but HR still high) + 40 min interval swim
- MatthewS: S 1 / B 1 / R 0/ Rest Days 0 ; Total = 2 ; 01:37'00" I'm also in for the weight challenge, but I'm trying to go the opposite way and put a little weight back. Like Mitch, this is the lightest I've been since my college days and my pants and suits don't fit me anymore. I'm also trying to avoid having to buy new ones.

I am planning to take a rest day the day before the race, but other than that: 1) Do you normally taper before a sprint distance (I have only done 2 other tris, all sprint) So many questions, so little time... The purpose of the taper is get your body to the point where it is ready for peak performance on race day. There is no formula other than to do that which keeps you in peak form, but gives the body time to recover and regenerate from hard work. For a sprint, a week taper is more than enough. Make sure that you hit at least all of the disciplines during the taper week and decide what feels good and what hurts. Cut intensity and duration throughout the taper in each discipline. I find that moderate intensity swims work really well because they are low impact and do not tax the systems. If you need the extra day - take it. There's no right answer other than to listen to your body - it is always right. |

Did ordering without trying on work for you? Chris, yes it worked for me and I'm a US shoe size 10 and my Shimano's are size 44, so you should be Ok with a 9.5. The beauty about being in the US is that you can return them if they don't fit well! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samyg - 2012-06-01 9:16 PM Tapering is simple: Volume=reduced (nothing long, it is easier to recover from hard than to recover from long). Intensity=equal or higher, depending on the athletes level of fitness (the fitter the athlete, the more emphatic you should be on speed). Another rest day is ideal during taper week, just don't put them back to back, you will loose fitness.Ernesto et al. I have my next race (sprint distance) on the 17. What should I do for taper?
