I decided to pluck up the courage to get my butt off the couch and onto the bike. When I put my bike shoes on, I realized that my big toe is quite swollen. Who cares! Get on the damn bike! Thirty minute mood adjustment complete. Bring on the red wine!" Nothing takes your mind off a broken left foot like smashing your right big toe! Oh no, nothing makes me cuss like smashing a toe except maybe installing a car seat. I didn't realize your foot was broken all this time! Sending you some healing thoughts. Don't even get me started on car seats! My foot has quite a nice bruise right over the knuckle. I smashed it in the spot where people get bunions. The swelling has gone down. It's just a minor but colorful annoyance. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am starting to think that joinging the local tri club was a bad idea. As a single mom most days (I love my dear husband but being in law enforcement keeps him away a good amount of the week) my workout windows are short and leave no time for chatting or dilly dallying. Seems like everywhere I go lately, I run into a tri club member and the chatting time eats away into my workout. AAHHHH! What are the best tactics to let them know it's training time/ not chatting time? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jenbmosley - 2013-02-11 8:41 AM SWIM SIGHTING (Samantha got me thinking about this)... How often do you incorporate swim sighting in your swim workouts? I was doing it for awhile last year, but haven't been doing it at all the last 4 months. How much does it really help? That's a great question. It shows wisdom to even ask it. I don't work sighting in to my workouts like I should. At swim practice, it's just go, go, go or it's smooth technique work. I need to start working sighting practice in to my solo swims on Wednesdays. I also need to get myself in to open water more this year, not just in my races. I feel a huge difference in a race situation when I am sighting. I can just feel the oxygen being consumed by the inefficiency when I sight. Then I need another 5 strokes just to recover to my previous oxygen level. The good news is that I've become quite a straight swimmer and don't need to sight any more often than 10 strokes and I will often go 20 strokes especially if I have another cue to go by (like bubbles from a swimmer ahead, or the morning sun a certain degrees off center, or something I can see to the side while breathing.

I did read a few articles this morning and looked at the link that Warren posted. I am going to try and incorporate some of those techniques. I will defintiely keep the earbuds in from now on, except they aren't waterproof, so I wonder what I will do in the pool. Never stop is one option. |

Some of the people in the northeast aren't so displeased by all of the snow. I know Warren is enjoying it with his kids and watching his dog flail about in the snow. I know this because I spoke to him yesterday! It sounded much like he and his family, except for his wife in Aruba, were enjoying the snowboundness. It does sound like a great time to be able to romp around and play with kids and see things many of us don't see very often. This was the first time I have actually spoken with any of the Junkies (other than Will) outside of what I will call local Junkies. I have met Matt and raced with him a few times. I asked Warren to give me a shout so we could discuss my family's plans for Boston and Warren and Jonathan live a hop, skip and jump from Boston. Lis and I can now relax a bit before we head out that way knowing that there are some things that will be made so much easier having a friend to be able lead us around. The next time I arrange a phone call I'll have to try to set it up a little more in advance and maybe try to get a 3 way call with Jonathan so we can all develop a plan. (I knew Jonathan was supposed to work yesterday.) BTW Warren, Lis and I kept looking for some other places to stay with your suggestions. It looks like we are going to stay in North Andover at a Homewood Suites. It will have 2 separate bedrooms and 2 separate bathrooms and, as you know, the bathrooms will be very important with 4 women traveling with me. AND, we will be saving a large amount of cash to boot! When we spoke on the phone we planned to stay in Medford for about $500 for 2 nights. In North Andover we would save $250 and only have a 30 minute drive toward Boston. BUT, there could be another change coming. Lis is checking into getting Friday off and us taking the girls out of school/college for one more day and making the entire trip on Friday. If we do that, we'll stay in North Andover from late Friday night until Monday morning. This plan would allow me a little more time to kind of relax, tour and run a bit more without having to feel rushed the entire time. The trip home would still be split as we discussed on the phone. I will not be doing the 12-13 hour drive after a full marathon!! If I did that I would have to be removed from the car like a piece of plywood. Yeah...definitely. Let me know what/when and we can help anyway we can. Can't wait to see you guys. It's gonna be great! |

The last one is of Bella (my buddy Ben's dog) breaking trail. The snow was about 3 feet deep here. She was just motoring through. The view from the top of the hill is of my friend Jake...you can almost see Warren's camp in the background. Here are a few photos: |

How often do you incorporate swim sighting in your swim workouts? I was doing it for awhile last year, but haven't been doing it at all the last 4 months. How much does it really help? I, like Warren and Jeff, don't practice it as often as I should. I usually don't worry about it until a few weeks from my first races and then I'll try to get some sighting work in on a weekly basis. I actually feel it's kind of hard to actually practice sighting in the pool because as soon as you raise and lower your head you have a line to follow again. The actual work to do is to practice the proper body and head positioning required to sight properly in open water. This can be practiced in the pool if you can sort of try to put aside the "looking" part of sighting. What I mean is, don't worry about looking down the pool as much as thinking about where your head and legs are during the sighting strokes. In a perfect world your head won't raise much, only enough to see above the water and then right back into the water. The problem with raising your head is that your legs will drop causing more drag and slowing you down. Then you have to try to pick up the pace again. I am placing a picture to demonstrate a decent head position, not necessarily ideal, to give an idea about how low you can keep your head. The idea is to keep your head as low as possible to keep your legs as high as possible. In my first pic you can see that my shoulders are slightly higher in the water than in the second picture. I am in a much more sleek swimming position in the second picture than in the first one. The first one I am sighting and the second is just in my normal stroke.

I am 6'3" tall and the snow bank is so high I can't see the first floor windows from the street. Along those lines, I know I have said that my elbows have been bothering me, well after clearing all the snow they are just aching like mad. I am supposed to get on the trainer, but I'm going to take some ibuprofen and drink beer. I think that will solve this problem. Warren, my buddy and I are going hiking tomorrow morning at Castle in the Clouds. I know it's last minute, but if you want to get some snowshoeing in, let me know. I think you need to go back and review Tony's post about shoveling snow for hours to get his long run in today before you completely ditch the idea of a ride. Are you man or mouse? However, I will support the beer idea. I am going to have a beer or two tonight myself. My nephew is here for his Guard drill weekend and he and I always have a beer together. Oops! sorry, just missed this post I guess.......mouse. |

Love the waterfall? picture, I'm jealous the most we can see around here is corn field stubble! Absolutely true on both counts! The pictures are incredibly stunning! I wish I could get over there and spend some time. In all seriousness, I am trying to talk Lis into making a trip out that way next year. I have already begun the suggestion process and the reminder that we have more disposable income since we aren't paying for parochial school tuition for 2 kids now. And Matt has nearly identical scenery as I do. Matt only lives about an hour and a half from me and I trek to Ohio for storm related work in that general area at least once a year. However, just south of Matt there are a few very small hills that would be great to ride on that I don't have around here. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am into a total recovery day today...........Well kind of, since I had to work all day too. I just feel trashed! After I got home from work I was trying to prepare myself to get on the bike and I felt exhausted. After the way my legs felt yesterday on my easy spinning ride I think I need a full day off. I honestly don't remember the last time I took a day off because I needed it. I went back and checked my logs. The last day I took off was January 2. I am not sure why I took that off other than it appears I had ART that day, it was my first day back to work after 17 days off and I had run and ridden the 2 previous days and I couldn't swim due to scheduling. Another thing I have noticed, and it is absolutely killing me, is that I have only swam 3 times this year. The pool hours have been the worst they have been since I began training for triathlon. They are simply ridiculous!!!! I am trying to find a place to go but the fees compared to what I have been paying are much , much larger. I'm going to have to make some kind of a decision if this stupidity continues. Anyway, I will enjoy my rest day beginning.............................................................................................................NOW! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I came across the mobile site for BT and was messing around with it, found that the nutritional logger is actually fairly easy to use. Time for an experiment, logged everything I ate today! Reviewed the results and if it wasn't for 10 hrs of activity every week I would probably be a lard a@@! Calories out 3000, calories in 3400 that's just ridiculous! Even my little handfuls of trailmix are Crazy high in calories. Did you know a PB & J is like 400 calories? I normally would eat 2 for lunch! I know Monday's are not the best days due to pool league and everything but I think I need to go on a diet! ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jonathan thanks for posting the pics, that is an awesome view and it looks like the dogs really enjoyed themselves in that snow. Dirk enjoy the recovery day it sounds like you've earned it. I hear you on the fustration with the pool as well. The pool I go to is 5 minutes from my house but the hours they are open keep getting shorter. I try and get in there between 11 am and 12:30 pm now. They are closed from 12:30 pm to 4 pm which is ridiculous. It was 1 to 3 pm last year which wasn't too bad. The early morning's, evening's and Saturday's are just too crowded for my liking. Matt I hear you on the calories! I try and estimate everything I eat and log it here on BT. Sometimes it's pretty shocking to see how it all add's up but I think it's a good thing to do. I now have a pretty good idea as to how many calories it takes for me maintain, lose and gain weight. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What's wrong with you people?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I decided I would do Jorge's plan - this morning was Day 1 of the plan. I thought I might skip Day 1 since I should be able to knock out a 45 minute ride pretty easy and could probably start with Day 3.... Oh, how WRONG I was. 13 minutes in I was totally drenched and couldn't even exert the power required for the intervals. I did my best, even though I couldn't keep up and now and my legs feel like jello. I have learned one thing this morning - this is EXACTLY the sort of torture I need to be doing. Heck, what is WRONG with me? Up until October, I was doing short hill climb sessions (10-20 minutes) on the trainers at the gym as a warm up and I have no idea why I ever stopped. I will be incorporating those back into my schedule. |
