Ryan who works at big Boulder bike shop will look at it tonight.

We'll see what he says.

I did swim and wasn't the slowest but fastest in the slow lane

Regarding cadence, I checked mine recently on the trainer and was surprised to find it was ~72-78.  I'm pretty sure it's higher than that when riding outside (not 100% positive though), and had just assumed it was similar on the trainer.  Apparently not.

It's official frame is toast.

Owner and well know fitter from Colorado Multipsport from Boulder both agreed. Ryan rode it to try and see how the carbon felt while riding. It made a eerie sound especially under strain.

Tomorrow going to rent a crap road bike, and Ryan and bike mechanic will try and get it set up tri like to fit me maybe moving base and aerobars as well as my Quarq and saddle so I might be just really using the road frame.

Ryan Ignatz fit Chrissie and many other top notch pros. His thesis was on something bike fit in school and used to teach physiology and worked with the well know Dr Lim. I talked to him about my bike fit and just observing me he noticed lots about me. Their shop sells Orbea so he filled me in what the replacement program is like so it isn't as bad as I thought.

Good news is my bike arrived only 1 day late not 3, bad news I think Federal Express ruined my Ordu carbon frame. There is big chunk of paint maybe 2-3" in a circle missing along with a big scrap on the frame just above my water bottle cage. I use a hard case Thule box and put pipe insulation around all my frame including this area and bubble wrap around cassette. I guess they squished the box with stuff on top and movement.

I'm so annoyed...

Ordu was a gift from my husband for our 25th anniversary

Camp bike mechanic will look at it soon and tell me if he thinks it is rideable.

Kathy...I'm so sorry to hear about your frame. I know the sentimental value just adds to the disappointment. I hope the replacement doesn't become a pain in the butt. Keep you chin up.

Oh rotten luck, Kath! I looked at that photo and it made me feel a little sick.

Hope you can still get some good use out of the camp though

3.5 hour ride on an Allez set up very close to my Ordu. Tomorrow or later today I'm getting a Look Carbon road bike to ride the rest of the week.

I suck at hills but rock on the descents...lots of work to do for me.

This weekend was my 2nd HIM distance bike ride and it was a bit more challenging than the first. I rode in my neighborhood instead of the IMAZ course and it was about 5X the climbing as the Tempe course. I also waited until after 11am to start my ride and the wind came up on the 2nd half of my ride. I just tried to keep in aero and cut though it.

This was also my first ride with Infinit Ride formula. I dumped about 2 scoops in my aero bottle and forgot to mix it up so my first drink was A LOT of powder, yuck. I stirred my straw around and got it mixed up after that. i tolerated it very well but I don't think I drank enough to get all the calories that I needed. I should have had a few more mini cliff bars because the 2nd half of my ride i started to get hungry. I think I'm just going to stick with the solid food because I know that works. I'll still do the Infinit in one bottle but I'm not going to rely on it for the bulk of my calories.

I've been saying it for months that I need to get a bike fit and I finally have an appointment with a local guy who fits a lot of the pros around here. I hope that it makes it more comfortable on the bike after 40 miles. That last 16 miles, my feet, knees and neck are about toast. I'm hoping this fixes it.

This weekend is a neat brick workout. I learned this from a member of our last mentor group. It's a 1 hour ride followed by a 30 min run then a 1 hour ride and 20 min run and a 1 hour ride and 10 min run. It should be 4 hours. Hopefully my knee has fixed itself.

Nice work. The brick workout that you have planned sounds nasty to say the least! Sounds like the triathlon training workout from hell. lol..

I'd give the Infinit another try. For long course, I normally mix mine into 2 and 3 hour bottles. Did you get a custom mix or the standard? We decreased the amount of protein and increased the caffeine to my orange bike mix. My run formula tastes like a salty margarita.
I normally add needed scoops of Infinit to the water bottle and then fill half way with water. Shake until mixed and then add the remaining water. This seems to work well since sometimes the mix can be a bit frothy.

Kathy, my heart goes out to you.  Once again your amazing attitude is inspiring.  Your kids are so lucky to have you as their mom!  Glad you are still getting good time in.   Swim sounded solid.

Joe, I don't know a lot about power but that sounded like a mighty good day at the bike shop.

Todd good luck with final HIM training.

Rene, how do you prep for two and three hour bottles?  I have a custom blend (actually I have two. One for shorter distances/time and one for longer).  I haven't read the mixing directions on the blend for the longer distance (just got it)but I assumed it was the two scoop for every hour  scenerio like my first blend is. What do you do when you are on the bike for hours?  Do you use Infinit for the whole ride and if so, do you carry some of it with you to mix with water later in the ride?

The brick workout was something "Calimavs" a member of our last mentor group did for either Wildflower or Vineman. I thought that would be a great training day and would mentally prepare you for the race better than anything else.

I noticed that the infinit does become very frothy so I just squirted one big squirt out after I mixed it in my down tube bottle. I just need to make sure that I thoroughly mix my aero bottle.

I had these same questions but I also wondered how you used it after it was mixed. Do you do a squirt of concentrate and a squirt of water or do you tolerate the concentrated mix?

I bought bottles with lines marked on them from Infinit in 09. The 2 hour mix has 4 scoops and 3 hour has 6 scoops per bottle. One of the great things about Infinit is that you can customize the flavor which really helps for the concentrated bottles. The mixture is very concentrated so you only drink a little bit and then supplement with water. The system that works for me is 1 swig (measured by the lines on the bottle) of Infinit every 15 minutes with water from aero bottle. I have a different plan for the GU depending on the day/race for the bike. I also have a bike and run mix of Infinit. During IMFL 09, I supplemented with a peanut butter sandwich, lime flavored peanuts and a Diet Dr. Pepper (only a few sips) in special needs. There is probably something that would work better but this what I've had for years on long hot bike rides.

It helps to practice your nutrition every time you ride/run. Plus at the IM if gives you something to help pass the time!
My system is not based on a sweat test or any other testing. It is just what I've come up with over the years.
It would be interesting to hear what everyone else does and why.

I'm currently working on my bottle setup for IMTX. Normally, I have an aero bottle with water, downtube bottle (Infinit) and 2 bottles (Infinit & water) in the rear. I'm looking at downsizing this year. I also carry a baggie of Infinit mix in my jersey and keep an extra bottle in Special needs. I'm thinking about getting rid of the rear Infinit bottle. The downcage bottle of Infinit should be enough to get me to special needs. If something happened to a bottle then I could always use the powdered mix. What type of bottle setup does everyone else use?
I've also considered switching to a bottle mounted between the aero bars but will probably stay with the aero bottle until after IMTX.

Great discussion guys about bottle setup!

I've been discussing this with Rene as well. I did my last IM (LP) with only 1 bottle on the cage and a PD aero bottle. I actually started the bike with just an empty bottle cage on the bike and picked something up in the first aid station.

LP is hilly and I didn't want the extra weight.

IM TX or IMAZ are flatter and the weight issues are not as big a deal IMHO, so extra bottles are not as big a deal.

It always seems a shame to me to see a beautiful light carbon bike with $$$ components and light race wheel$ loaded down with 4-5 drink bottles as it kinda defeats the purpose. However I understand that some use Infinit nutrition or other (I will be doing something like that this year) and that going with only 1 bottle is not a practical option for everyone.

Truthfully I suck at IM nutrition and wouldn't put much stock in what I say as I have done 3 IMs and didn't do very well on any of the races IMHO re: nutrition. (Then again I never had a plan beyond drink and eat what is on the course)

I'm planning an aero bottle on the frame and/or a "torpedo" mounted bottle on the aero bars (I'm starting to do some aero testing with my PM to figure out what's best).  I use an xlab behind my seat for extra hydration and a bag for storage but those will come off for raceday.  I figure for sprint or oly, one bottle will be enough, but like the option of two in case it is very hot.  For HIM, one was going to be a concentrated mix and one water, but I like Fred's idea of picking up a bottle at the first exchange (would pick up the energy drink one).  I also have a flask I'll fill with Gu in a jersey pocket.  Solids don't work well for me if I want to run afterwards.  Tools will be taped under my seat most likely.

I did my last 20 min power test as part of Jorge's plan last night and I must say I'm quite happy with my gains from mostly 3x per week trainer sessions (with a few 4x in there).  First 20 min test (coming off a cycling break): 273, test last night: 321 W.  This should lead to a CP over 300 when I do my 3 min test (fingers crossed ).

I've started working with a coach, not in the conventional sense, but he's using my history to build a custom training plan to get me through Eagleman, highlighting key workouts, race rehearsals etc.  We're using Apollo Raceday to share data/models etc, and it's a pretty easy interface I must say.  Once it's built he'll be hands off (though we're friends so I'm sure he will be checking up on me), but I'm planning to do some consulting along the way to check up on my progress.

I've had good luck going with the live-off-the-course approach.  One aero bottle and a cage on the frame that stays empty for most of the race.  Only use it when I feel like I need more calories than I'm getting from grabbing a single bottle/station.

I've tried the between-the-bars mount, but decided that I like the convenience of the aero bottle.  Not a fan of the aero drink look, but function>>form in IM.

Off to run in the rain (or so it appears)...
