Hey all!
Training has gone pretty well and looking forward to the race and a couple of weeks off afterwards.  After NOLA I am taking  1-2 weeks off from training then looking ramp up and work on short and fast racing.  Well, fast for me that is.  Ran yesterday and hot and humid.  Its going to be a long summer.

Lets hear how everyones training is going.

Gary,

It's been blazing here in the midwest too.  85 degrees yesterday.  Absolutley unreal.  It's already 72 this morning, with a high of 85, and the record high for this day is 83 set in the '50's.  I have a feeling it will be a real hot summer too.

Training took a bit of a turn for me last week.  Concentrated on getting more work done running, and let the swim slip a bit.  The good news is that the run never felt better, but the swim was rusty this morning.  7 weeks out still, feel like I have time to get everything fine tuned and feeling confident.

Hope everyone has a great day!  and that I wake up a bit (I may have fallen asleep while eating breakfast, and at least one red light).

Edit:  Got an easy 3 mile run in over lunch with the blue hairs.  Little less than 10min pace.

I was on spring break last week (read: very little training). And started my new job this week. I think that I'm really going to enjoy my new job but it's going to cut out much of my web-surfing time. So although I'll continue to post on here, it will probably be less frequent. I'm still trying to figure out how to gt my training in w my new job. Fortunately my boss is a big runner and often goes at lunch. Hopefully I'll still be able to squeeze in lunchtime runs too.

My 20 mile race is in two weeks so for now I'm focusing on it and will increase my biking and swimming when it's over.

Quick update (from Breckenridge on spring break)

Bad news - I haven't run in over two weeks due to knee pain just below the knee cap.

Good news - It's feeling better and I've been skiing and hiking on spring break with no issues.

Bad news - I don't know the cause for sure but they didn't start feeling better until I also took a week off cycling.

Good news - I scheduled a bike fit and am getting new shoes and cleats next Tuesday to try to rule that cause out.

Mike ... patience is golden when it comes to healing.  Hang in there and whatever you do ... do not inflame the sore area as it will only take longer to get back to normal.  Don't know if you're familiar with Voltaren gel or not, but it works well for me with prolonged strains.

I'm racin' this weekend ... Cary Short Duathlon.  Run 2.5 miles, bike 17.6m and repeat the run again.

Very smart in my opinion.  Stopped running to prevent further damage and addressing what hopefully is the root cause.

Hey, quick thing.  I had offered to Texas some tri clothes but he has since dropped out of the group (but if he comes back now they are his).  So before I put it on the Pay it forward I have Tri top and tri pants, used that anyone can have for the cost of shipping.  Size large for everything.  The tri top is white with black, fit me at 6 ft 196lbs but too loose at 175 lbs.  Tri pants are fine but I have others I prefer, both Aevero's.  Also one pair of very old but in great condition riding pants.  These are the old style with lots of cushion, gray and size large.  Let me know otherwise I will put them in the Pay it Forward by Monday.

Gary,

I wouldn't mind the tri top if Texas doesn't come back around.  Been actually looking around for some recently.  I just ordered a pair of shorts the other day, so I'm good on those.

Thanks!

Dorm, never heard of Voltaren but will check it out.  Thanks and good luck this weekend!

Knees are funky.

If just below the knee cap, high levels of soreness could indicate some patella tendonitis.  Ice and time off are the only things that help tendonitis go away.  Pain would more likely indicate an injury to the MCL or meniscus, which would be worthwhile to have looked at.  Could just use a simple scope to clean it out for you.  If it just feels like annoying pain in the actual knee, you may try some glucosamine chondroiton.  Takes about a week to build up in your body, but the stuff does have good results with alleviating joint pain.  It's especially highly recommended to older folks with arthritis.

I'm not some sort of Dr., so read it all with a grain of salt.  I just happened to spend quite a bit of time on trainers tables during a long long football career.

My motto is, whenever in doubt, have it looked at.  Unless it's game day, then just grab some percocet and go!

Good Luck Dorm, have fun.

I am looking for new running shoes, have been using NB low end. Anybody try the NB MT10 or MT20 minimal style shoes? What is everyones favorite? Thanks.

David, I use the Asics Gel Kayana.  It's a pretty beefy, but lightweigth shoe which has good support for a Clyde like me.

Thanks.  The soreness was definitely below the knee at the patella and took a couple weeks off to subside.  I keep meaning to start taking glucosamine, I figure it can't hurt.

Glucosamine has come a long way since they realized how good it is for joints.  When it was first recommended to me about 9 years ago, you needs 5-6 pills three times a day.  Now they're down to 1 pill twice daily.

Had a good past two days.  7.25 miles on the bike yesterday, and a 10k run over lunch today.  Haven't been that far in 16 or 17 years.  It may be ambitious, but I'm planning on riding the bike to the Y (5 miles), swim a continuous 1000m, and then bike back home.

GaryRM - 2012-04-06 3:24 PM Dorm and Elizabeth - are you racing this weekend?

I signed up, but will not race.  One of my daughters is home for the weekend and the son-in-law brought his bike.  I don't get to ride with him often, so I'm pulling out of the race and will have a nice long ride tomorrow with him instead.

There are tons of local races around here each month, so I'll add another back in - probably in May.

That's really cool Dorm.  Enjoy your ride!

Missed my workout this morning.  Slept right throughout.  Can't remember the last time I was able to sleep in until 7:30.  Made it through the day without being peeved about it too.  I'll make it up some time this weekend.

Just finishing spring break. 7 day Disney cruise then 2 at universal. Ran on the ship and did the stationary bike. Swam 3 times in the ocean. Short, but good OWS practice. I did a 5k on Castaway Cay but took a wrong turn and did a 6+k instead. I was in 2nd place before I followed the leader down the wrong path. Felt good to race again. 9 weeks to 70.3. Back to work tomorrow.

I'm not. Its our local spring sprint and a ton of fun but my 20 mile trail race is next weekend and I want to focus on that and not risk getting injured this close to the race.

Leftrunner - sounds like a great trip! Too bad about the missed turn.
