Question: I've got a 3 hr ride on Thursday.  I really want to do it on the trainer. And to be totally honest I'd really like to do the majority of my rides from now till race day on the trainer.  Avoiding the possibility of getting hurt and fitting this in with classes are my main two reasons.

Really bad idea or ok?

I personally don't think it's a good idea.  While the trainer is a great tool, it does not mimic outside riding.  If you can get outside, get outside.  You will have to work on things like looking around you, dealing with gradient changes, heat, weather, etc when you ride outside.  Riding on the trainer for a long ride cuts all of those out.  No adjusting for potholes, looking ahead (strengthen your neck), changing gears for the terrain.

Unless there is a good reason, ride outside.  And not getting hurt is not a good reason (IMHO).  You haven't gotten hurt thus far right?

IM Merchandise Question: I typically avoid the IM store and the Expo like the plague. However, I want to buy some IMKY stuff for a few friends this year. Does the IM merchandise (including "finisher" merchandise) typically sellout? Do I need to get to the IM store early?

I bagged my swim yesterday to work on prepping an apartment to paint. Then I ran an easy 6 miles. My legs hurt and my siatic nerve is bothering me.
Isn't this the part where everyone gets sick and hurt?

All the "normal" S, M are gone asap.  The XS, XL and 2xl are the only ones left.  I went on the second day of the expo last year and there was nothing in my size.  After the race I went about 2 hrs after for finisher stuff and same thing.

I hit the finsher's merchandise about 0800 the day after.  It was already slim pickings.  So yes.

As you start your taper, you will get sick and the body will begin repairing itself.  So it's perfectly natural to get sick about a week out from the race.

BTW, for those wondering about who is going to be announcing at L-ville...the following copied from the Kona Roll Call over on that "other site" should tell you that someone we are all hoping for will be there:

I guess I'm in the minority here on who is announcing the event, personally I could care less.  After crossing the line last year I was in lala land and had no idea who was saying what.  The chute was so bright with the lights and loud it was like running on to a concert stage (IT WAS AWESOME).   I was much more excited to find my wife and family who drudged around KY for 12hrs.  Anyway my $.02
Hope everyone has a great race regardless of who is announcing!!!!!

That's kind of what I was getting at.  It shouldn't be happening now unless you've started an artificial taper, but each person is different.  Or that could not be the reason you're sick now.

GOOD NEWS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saw the Ortho today and she said "Don't count yourself out of the Ironman just yet"
She said I have a very minor fracture and don't need a cast.  My treatment is to move it as much as possible and to heat the elbow to help the pooled blood get out of the joint.  She said I should feel back to normal in 2 weeks (hopefully) and will be fully healed in 6 weeks.  There is no way I can re injure myself or break it further from moving it or doing the race.  I can RUN, BIKE on the trainer and SWIM if it doesn't hurt.  I'm gonna try to run today for a bit and bike on the trainer tomorrow (after it gets fixed!
The real test will be Monday when I get in the pool.  I will make a decision at the end of next week about the race.  Coach is positive that I can still do it.  I only missed the last week of hard core training due to a neck injury and broken arm.  Right now I feel optimistic but I don't want to get my hopes up just yet. One day at a time.  Either way I'm stoked not to have a cast!!

Great news!

FWIW - I broke my wrists (radius bones) in a crash during a race on July 18.  The left is mostly healed, but the right one is too sore to swim without support.  So, I'm swimming with a brace (bought at a pharmacy) on my right wrist.  Was able to swim 40 minutes straight last night with no pain.  It's slows me down some, but better than nothing at this point!

What is everyone's "long" taper workouts for this weekend looking like. My taper got moved from 2 weeks to 3 due to illness. If I feel good by this weekend I will probably do 3 hours on the bike with a 30 min run afterwards. Then an 1:30 run Sunday. I am flying by the seat of my pants because my plan changed. So what do you think of that plan and what are you guys doing?

Pegasus- For what it's worth, I agree with Marvarnett.  I think you should ride outside UNLESS there are issues you are concerned with that might present danger.  For example, if your studies/work take up your daylight hours, then riding inside might be your best choice.  However, if riding indoors is going to make you most comfortable, I would still try to get at least a few outdoor rides in for the reasons Marv... noted.
Peace,

moabrunner- This is my last "long-ish" stuff this week. I did a 1:20 swim today in open water; I'm looking to ride about 3 hours Friday and run about 1:45 Saturday.  From there everything will be much less.  Mostly rest and filler.
