Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dcon - 2010-06-18 6:43 PM Hi everyone. My first tri for this year (2nd ever) is Sunday morning so I'm heading out in a few hours to (it's Sat here already). The weather forecast is not looking good - 50% chance of rain - so that should be a new experience. I know I'm in better running and cycling shape than I was last year, but am not so sure about the swim. My plan is to take my time for the swim and then push harder on the bike/run. Look for a race report on Sun or Mon. Good luck to everyone else who is racing this weekend. By the way, I will not be wearing jorts. Good luck Dan! Crush the course! |

![]() Got in a nice long run after work...well...if you call 8.2 miles long. But I suppose it is for me considering I don't have any type of running event longer than a 10k till November. Looking forward to this weekends rides. Gonna get in a nice 75-80 mile ride in tomorrow, and a 40-45 mile ride in on Sunday. I've already got in about 100 miles since Monday...so this will be by far my largest volume week. |

![]() I just checked the results of the Hawaii 70.3 that was held a couple of weeks ago...curious to see who from Hawaii qualified for Kona. To my surprise...nobody in the M25-29 AG claimed the Hawaii qualifying spot. The Big Island resident spots were claimed, but not the ones for the rest of the islands. Not sure why...I suppose the first few guys may have passed on making payment, and everyone else just dug out and didn't stick around to catch the roll down. The Hawaii spots in the other AGs were all claimed. So I suppose if I did the race, finished, and hung around just in case...I could have raced Kona this year. LOL |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No training for me this weekend! We had a major strom roll through my employers service territory and we have 75k customers out of power. Or at least we did. We are picking them back up pretty quickly but its a long process. As of this post I am on hour number 19 and still going. As a line crew supervisor I had not overseen (is that a word?) this many personeel before and it has not been much fun at times. I have been the coordinator for 25 tree trimmers and 40 lineman, organizing work for southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana (when I am from northeast Indiana) for most of the day and I am getting exhuasted. I am posting because things have slowed down but if I slow down it will not be pretty. I hope to get a few hours of sleep in a little bit, then back in by 7AM. Someone get some extra sleep for me. |

![]() Today's long ride was awesome. 79 miles mostly flat miles, but still 2200 feet of climbing thrown in there. Not bad considering my legs were already pretty sore from yesterday's run. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tri No. 2 is in the books. The swim was a challenge, again.....but I beat my goal time by more than 3min. (overall....not the swim leg). I don't know the T1 time, yet. They included it with the swim time on the timing sheets. BUT, I biked the course in 19.2mph! That's a PB for me. I felt good on the bike. The hilly course (last mi. had us climbing 3/4 of it on the run) was better than I thought (28:23). 4 of the last 6mi. on the bike were uphill. I'm stoked I did as well as I did, training only 2.5mos.. I'll be better prepared for the swim leg of my next tri in 2mos.. Final time (300M+ - including beach-type exit from pool; 12mi. bike; 5K) was 1:16:52. I would have been tickled with anything under 1:20. T1 times aren't available. T2 was :48. Looking forward to devoting the next 2mos. to my swim.....and doing well at my 8/22 tri.. Thanks for all the support along the way. jeff Edited by nc452010 2010-06-20 10:58 AM |

Went well over all. Still have some work to do and maybe not suck the big one in transition. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=213741 Jonathan- Awesome job on your tri! I envy your times, especially the swim! Jeff- Do you have a race report yet? I didn't see one, but I'm glad you are seeing improvements in such a short time and I'm looking forward to reading your report. I did a 31 mile bike today and my average mph has gone up quite a bit since I started riding in March which is definately encouraging. Had bike issues in the beginning of week, but that's fixed now so I'm gonna try and get some miles in this coming week. I've really been trying to push myself on the hills. I did an OWS Sat. A guy in my group zipped up the suit for me and somehow the velcro at the neck didn't get stuck together right and annoyed me the whole swim. I couldn't really fix it once we were out there and doing drills. But it kept scatching my neck and grabbing little pieces of hair at the nap of my neck at pulling it out of my swim cap. When I got out, I had a knot of hair at the nap of my neck that was impossible to brush out. So, I just gave up & cut it out. Hopefully it won't be too noticeable. I'm thinking of cutting my hair because it's just to annoying to deal with when I'm swimming & sweating so much. We'll see. I'm not really a fan of how I look with short hair. Guys are lucky. If I was a guy I would just shave my head. Edited by jpbis26 2010-06-20 7:00 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DirkP - 2010-06-18 1:51 PM okay, I have a question (although not nearly as intriguing or interesting as Davids): I am trying to decide if I should try to get my cycling cadence higher. Right now I think I avg. in the low 90's. I try to keep it about 91-93 during nearly all of my rides. I have no accurate way of knowing what my true avg. is because I don't have the right computer to feed me that kind of information. So basically I look at the computer regularly throughout my rides. Anyway, last year I was trying to hold the mid 80's while training and now I can easily hold the low 90's and maintain this for a 40 mile ride and keep a decent avg. speed. My question is: what do I stand to gain by incresing my cadence to the upper 90's? I am thinking it would give me something to work on for the rest of this season and the winter. BTW David, I think you should do the jorts but I don't want to see any pictures. I saw the one from last years race that you did and I still have to poke my minds eye out over that one. LOL keep it where its comfortable. for a lot of poeple this can change based on how you feel, that ride, etc, anywhere in the 80s through 110 can work for most people. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jpbis26 - 2010-06-18 2:10 PM I have some running questions. My logs are up to date, so you can see what I've been doing. I'm starting to try and run more often (shooting for 5 days a week-b/c this is very doable over the summer) and run for longer distances. As I start doing longer distances, I'm not really slowing down my pace, but I am taking small walking breaks. So... 1. Should I continue taking small walking breaks (3-4 of about 2-3 mins in length) during longer runs or should I try to keep running the whole time but at a slower pace? 2. When I do shorter runs (like 2 miles), should I try and push myself to run at a faster pace? 3. Anyway you can judge what pace you are running at when you're outside? 4. Just got a HR monitor. How should I use this during runs? right now i would stop adding volume for a bit and slowly work out thewalk breaks (this will be sortof like adding some volume), get to where you can run all of it and then work on building up again. i would NOT try to push paces at all right now, as this is just asking to get hurt and would be a huge setback. |

Did not have a set of race wheels, and it was WINDY and hot, but managed to go 2:00.6 and first overall by 30 sec! best olympic race to date for me by far. Hope everyone had a great weekend |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats to all who raced this weekend, seems like some good results coming in. I'm looking forward to the race reports. I had a sprint today too, it was also a first tri for my gf, my roommate and my gf's roommate. Its a pool swim and TT start, so I was actually done before they even left. Made it stressful being responsible for pictures and being in the right place at the right time, especially since there were three of them. I appreciate the photog people much more now. Anyway, this was a cool race for me because I did this as my very first tri 2 years ago and have done it last year and now this year. I've dropped my time from 1:21 something and 24th OA to 1:14 something and 7th OA and this year turned in a 1:04:52 and 2nd OA. The first place guy has won the past three years and I've slowly picked up almost 20 minutes on him (he beat me by a little over a minute today). I've got to say though, maybe the best part of the race was when they posted results and I walked over and the third place guy (a BTer I heard though I do not know him) saw the first place guy and then that he was third and then points to my name and says something like "who the hell is this kid?!?!?!" and I'm standing right next to him and sort of give him a wave and say "thats me". |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Looks like it was a very eventful weekend. Congrats to Jeff, Jonathan and David on your races. I did my Oly yesterday and was fairly satisfied with the results - 2:55:32. The swim was a major challenge, but I managed to get out of the water in 37 minutes and I was still smiling. Last year I looked nearly dead (and felt that way too). As I wheeled my bike out of the transition area, the first downpour started. It continued for about 25 minutes and then cleared for about 25 minutes.... and then the second downpour lasted about 25 minutes and if anything, it was raining even harder. I managed to average 30 km/hour (18.75 mph) through all that rain and gained about 10 years of "riding in the rain" experience. Although I was satisfied with my time, it shows I have lots of room for improvement on the bike. When I got to T2, my running shoes were totally soaked (so was the rest of me), but the rain let up and the temp started to climb. I managed to do the 10k in a little over 54 minutes. I was hoping for 50-52, but my legs were feeling the strain from the bike leg. Look for a race report later. |

![]() Had a great weekend. Finished my rides as planned...so a 79 miler on Saturday, and a 46 miler on Sunday. My biggest weekend, and week thus far on the bike. Bad news is my shoulder is still bothering me. It's slowly getting better, but not nearly good enough. I'm going to schedule an appointment to see my doctor to hopefully get a referral for PT. I'm normally don't go to the doctor for anything, but from the advice of a few friends who have medical and sports injury experience, I'm going to. The whole talk of building up scar tissue and permanent damage if I don't fix it now kind of scared me. |

(and my PB in a race by .8mph). First time I rode the course was 6wks ago. I did 17mph. I did 18mph for the 1st time, 3wks ago. I did 19.2mph in my race....on "whatever" tire pressure.....lol. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() RR: I spent the past week back in ohio visiting family after having one of the girls i coach race at youth rowing nationals in cincinnati, and decided to race the maumee bay olympic this weekend. A few of us got up there early and the wind was already blowing and temps were up to 70ish by registration and looked to be around 75-80 for the actual race. Went into the race with the plan of pushing the swim and just seeing where things fell. no race wheels and biking hard all week didn't leave me feeling great about the bike, and i just wanted to get in a fun no pressure race before heading back to philly. The swim started out well, i got out in front quickly and settled down into my own pace. as we came around the far turn bouy i was alone save for the last sprint waves i was quickly catching and weaving through. while the water was not clear it was an easy swim to navigate between the bouys and following the line of sprint folks up ahead of me. coming around the near bouys i was completely alone, and unless someone had managed to sneak past, i was out in front by a decent bit on the swim. the whole 2nd loop was almost identical to the first; run into sprint athlete, swim around, keep pushing. This was one of the best feeling swims i have ever had, and i felt like i could just push and push. As i came out of the water someone yelled to me i was in first. forgot to look at my watch coming out of the water but a quick glance as i was exiting T1 showed right around 20:xx so a sub 20 swim for the first time ever! The bike started out pretty well. some wind, head on the way out, tail on the way back. my training wheels are not in great shape right now (badly need some new spokes and tires), so the better part of the ride was spent praying they would hold up to some of the bumps on the road and not flat out on me. Yesterday i moved a few things around with my bars and saddle (yeah yeah nothing new on race day). after the first 15 min or so i settled down a bit and actually had a pretty good bike considering everything. bike position was comfortable, able to keep the power and cadence up, and things felt smooth. With about 2 miles to go on the bike i thought a car was passing me, looked over, and 2nd place shot by. There was no way i was letting him get away that easy this late in the race, and i picked things up a bit to stick with him. from there till T2 we stayed about 80 feet apart, and we entered transition about this far apart. left T2 in exactly the same spacing, and headed out for a hot, sunny, windy run. through the first mile i slowly made up ground and realized i was catching him and not pushing all that hard. we went through mile one right on 6:04 pace and as we rounded a corner to the lake path i prepared to pass him, and promptly got nailed in the face by the huge headwind. i tried a quick pass, slowed the second i made it around him, and jumped right back behind him until we left the path a half mile later. As soon as we were out of the wind i picked it up a bit and started opening up a gap. by mile 3 he was :45 sec back and fading. coming back from the turn around 3rd place was 2:40 back from me, but looked strong. At this point there was not much i could do about him though and simply held on as best i could. rounding the final bend i glanced back at my watch and knew it would be close to 2hrs but not sure if i could break it or not. i did my best to pick it up at the end but my legs were pretty much fried by this point. crossed the line and just bent over, sick, hurting, but with a smile on my face. 30 sec later 2nd place crossed the line, having laid down the fastest run of the day (i think it was 33 min). Final time was 2:00.6 First overall olympic win for me and a 7 min PR :-) legs are now very very sore, and my stomach is still not happy. heading back to philly from columbus in an hour or so...... |
