I know you have had challenges recently getting training time in and working through some injuries so it must feel good to have a race under your belt! |

Don't be too hard on yourself. Every race is a learning experience. As for the transitions, were there long entry-exits? This would contribute to longer times. |

More weather messed up my long ride this weekend, but I got 2 short ones in. I have yet to get in more than 48 miles in one ride!!! One I road in another hail storm. The wind was brutal. I hooked up with a couple local fast guys. One of them beat me up a beat. I got dropped by him in the headwind, but we dropped the other guy first!! I was shocked at another 19+ mpg avg in that mess. We called the ride short when it started lightening. I'll train in the elements if I have to, but that's where I draw the line. Then I got my wife out for a group ride on Sunday. 35 miles at 17mph avg. She did great!!! I'm so proud of her!! She's still getting used to her new road bike so she did better after she got used to gear selection and hanging on others wheels. A couple of us pushed her once in a while to keep her with the group and in the draft, but she hung in there!! Even when I knew she was hurting. My achilles heal was soar after saturday. A little soarer yet after Sunday. Sunday night I went for a long run and had to quit 7.5 miles in. It hurts! and I'm gimping around today. I swim tonight, which should effect it, so hopefully it'll be good tomorrow. I moved my cleats back a bit on the shoe of the foot that hurts. I'm hoping it was just a positioning problem. I did a short, but pretty high effort run yesterday. 90 degrees out, and my HR was really high (due to the heat I guess?) but my legs and body felt great. I'm going to do 2 weeks of regularly scheduled training, if it goes well I'm entering the Oly race on July 11th instead of the sprint. I *think* I can get 1/2 hour/day of pool access for the next 2 weeks (mon-thurs, while my girls are taking swim classes) which would be really nice! I'll know about that for sure this afternoon. |

Extreme Veteran 565![]() ![]() ![]() Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: brick94513-GoGoGo Mentor Group - Closed For Now!Conquered the Tour de Cure yesterday. About 6 hours in the saddle and 78 miles. It was my first time climbing Tunitas Creek which I'm told is part of the Amgen TOC route. Whoa, what a climb, especially fifty-something miles into a ride. The event was really well organized, great volunteers and friendly riders everywhere. |

I'm working on increasing volume across the board for all three disciplines, I just got some new goodies for the bike and I started a new 1/2 marathon plan for a race in September. The heat really makes running suck, but the wife and I both need to get in our long training days on the weekend so I do the chivalrous thing and let her hit it early and I go out when it's hot. I'm definitely noticing that multisport training results in less days of feeling run down and I look forward to it more that when I was just running all the time. Only one more week to sign up for the Las Vegas tri before prices go up! |

After a few days off, back at it with a ride yesterday and a run today. Hip feels great / think it was just the arthritis flaring up due to the overtraining. Week will be fairly light with the move -- house is half packed / they'll be here all week moving us. Will be happy to be moved as that'll give me access to the pool on the weekends for some longer workouts on form. |

Maybe you should "run" between the truck and the house. A) Get a workout in while performing the agonizing act of moving. B) Get it over with sooner. |

Not very far to my bike or the bike/run exits. I am still astonished at my time. Oh well....definitely time to start practicing them fairly regularly. |

You're going to love all the cycling that goes on around here. And take a look at the Naperville HRMS sprint tri. It's really close to your new house. Let me know if you need anything. I found out last night that I'm no good at trueing wheels!!! LOL I sent them off to the shop. Although, I may be disappointing Jay by not using the opportunity to purchase a new set!!! LOL I may buy myself a set of Mavic open pro's with powertap and keep these for the computrainer. Edited by Meulen 2010-06-15 8:36 AM |

Just for fun, here it is... Others may be better qualified to analyze, but from my limited experience I would say: 1. You may be turning your head to far to breath. Do your legs sink when you breath? 2. I can't see any water movement buy your feet. Try using a pull bouy to give you the "swimming downhill" feel. Overall, that looks really smooth and relaxed!! Just for fun, here it is... Very nice, smooth and controlled pace! Your rotation is really nice. Here are a few observations in order of importance: 1. It looks like you lead your pull with your elbow a bit. Get that elbow high on the catch, open up the armpit. I do drills where I lead the pull stroke by flexing my wrist, then get the forearm vertical before my elbow starts to move back. If you do this, it's really hard to drop your elbow. Practice out of the water too - you'll see what I mean. 2. Your legs are dragging a bit. Maybe your head is a little high? Maybe you need a little more kick? Practice pressing your chest in more to get your butt/legs up to the surface. 3. Your arms on your recovery could be more relaxed/less high. They seem to whip forward quickly, pause a bit, then pull. A drill for this is the fingertip drag. It teaches you to have a loose smooth recovery where your fingertips drag on the water from your "pockets" to your armpits to out in front - shoulder width. |

Just for fun, here it is... I'll chime in here too. I agree with Brian that it looks like you are lifting your head to breath. It is hard to explain, but if you are breathing on the left, think about gliding on your right arm with your right ear close to your right shoulder. Your body rotates as one piece (head, shoulders, hips). You only need to rotate enough to get your mouth out of the water and into the pocket to breath. This is where I try to focus on keeping one eye below water level when breathing. The other thing is crossover. It is hard to tell from the angle of the camera, but it looked like you were crossing the midline of your body. From the time your hand enters the water until the catch is complete, your hand should not crossover the midline of your body. My swim coach had me think about extending toward the sides of the pool to break this habit. While this seems like an exaggeration, it actually got me to reach straight out in front of me. |
