Look carbon road bike worked much better for today's 4.5 hour ride RAAM 4 women team member rented it for me from a guy who works for Lance Armstrong as his personal mechanic when he is in the area....bike has some good juju or something. We climbed 3200 feet over 32 miles and the descents were amazing. The women here tease me as I fly on the descents where many are much more conservative on the crappy roads with switchbacks and wind and I pass many. Descending is my absolute favorite part of cycling. Strange how today I felt so much better than yesterday even though more fatigued...bike? attitude? no training making me stale over the weekend? Whatever it is I'm pleased. I think I set a 150 yd PB in the pool Sunday seems the Solvang HS pool is good for me. Today I had some personal swim coaching that I think helped with some swim flaws I have. I'm in a much better place today than past few days. Orbea has 2010 Ordu in my size/color at significant discount instead of going the warranty way which means I'd get a new bike faster....so I may get a new frame next week. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Fred Doucette's Half-Iron and Ironman Focused Group! -CLOSED! Well, hitting the road tomorrow for a 10 day "college tour" with my son, a high school junior. It should be fun although we will be spending alot of time on the road. We will visit 3 schools in NC Thursday/Friday of this week. Spend the weekend in the Hampton/Wiliamsburg area of Virginia visiting family and friends and then hit 5 schools the following week. This is so much different than when I was looking at colleges 30+ years ago. I applied one place, fortunately was accepted, and that was it. So, next 10 days will be run focused. I'm planning on doing a sprint distance event on 4/2. Looking forward to getting a race in to see where I stand after winter training. Randy |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Fred Doucette's Half-Iron and Ironman Focused Group! -CLOSED! Fred Doucette - 2011-03-16 8:17 AM Fred that’s one crazy looking swim. To me it looks complicated. I am glad you survived it.Tough swim this am for me. 3,200 yards. Just a bit tired. I have really been struggling with the time change. Time changes or even traveling half way around the world doesn’t bother me. Maybe I am use to it with all the years of sleep deprivation. Maybe I have that gene that allows you to function on little sleep. I have even stopped worrying about my sleep habits. I don’t log it anymore. So if I sleep, I sleep if I don’t I drive on.

Ok Fred and anyone who knows IMLP bike I have question: I have been doing 3 hour (hopefully soon 3 1/2 ) hour trainer rides, so roughly one loop of the course. Today I spent the last 20 min in 2 hardest gears trying to simulate climbing because I know the big climbs are at the end of the course at IMLP. So my question is how long did those climbs (I think they call it the "bears" , 3 different hills) take you (obviously i will be slower than Fred) and do you think it is a good idea on such a 3 hour plus trainer ride to do this kind of thing, like push a hard gear for the last 20-40 min? thanks |

I was at a conference recently and talking to a guy from a company that makes devices to monitor the vitals of first responders remotely. I was interested (not from a business perspective, but from tri perspective) because he said they could monitor dehydration. Turns out they use HR to do it, so that was disapointing. ANYWAY...he also mentioned one of the issues they face is the fatigue of jet lag and that they've done studies on how it affects the body. The average person recovers about one hour change per day while a person in good shape will recover 2 per day. So Fred, if you're in good shape you should be more than fine by now! j/k, I'm sure the issue is more to do with the shift back to waking up in the dark than anything else.
Chalk me up as a person who can somehow operate on too little sleep...I'd say I average 6-7 hours a night. I used to sleep late on the weekends, like 11 or so, but I've started getting up around 9-10 (still sleeping late to some of you I'm sure), but I feel better doing that. A tip a doctor told me to help if you're trying to make up sleep on the weekend is that 1) it can't really be done and 2) a better thing to do than just sleeping late is to wake up at your normal time, do what you normally do (e.g. have a cup of coffee, run etc) then go back to bed for a couple hours. You'll have more REM sleep cycles or whatever it is that's important when you sleep. |

Hopefully I can change my screen name to "marginallyfastrnow" or maybe as a longshot "smokinfastoldguydrinkinacoldoneonthepodium " The college tour is just kind of a look and see thing. Who knows where he will end up. Whether its an Ivy or not makes no difference to me. I grew up about 20 minutes from Williamsburg and although I did not go there would be thrilled if William & Mary was at the top of his list this time next year. He is a distance runner and he wants to run in college so that comes in to play as well. As a parent I just need to let him take it all in and form his own opinions rather than insert my own. Mom is at home jealous that she is not heading out with us. She will have her turn as we have a daughter that is a HS sophmore. One thing for certain is I will have very little $$$ over the next few years. Predicted screen name "poorernow". Randy |

Another beautiful ride around Solvang in Happy Canyon. Do you guys love descending on your bike? I do and every descent I try to take advantage of the hill. I don't get about other triathletes is when descending why not take advantage of the down hill? Almost every significant down hill I pass so many in my group as I tuck in get as aero as possible pedal if it helps a bit...and many pass me back on the up hills. Today gradual up on way out and down on way back...I passed the whole group of riders and ended up off the front. If I had my Power Meter I would suspect my variability index would be pretty good. I find it so odd.... |

The 10’ has a alloy 1" steer tube coupled with the 808 tubies just made it a very hairy ride in 10’. Now put me on my CR1 and I can’t go fast enough. Very stable down hill.

We have one in college and one going next year. The best thing about when they go to school out of state is that you can turn their bedrooms into storage space for your tri stuff. Where did you go today? |

Where did you go today? That was my wife's reasoning when she gave me the go ahead to buy a new bike over Christmas-she did not think we could afford it in the future. We drove from Chattanooga to Davidson NC this afternoon. Visiting Davidson tomorrow then UNC/Duke on Friday before visiting family/friends over the weekend in VA. Randy |
