Busy week this week with kids going back to school. My wife and I are sleeping on a brand new mattress this week too. Waiting for the mattress to break in a little since it is a firmer mattress than we had before and its leaving me a bit sore in the mornings.

Just finished a short brick workout in preparation for my next races. I'll be racing next Saturday at the Tinman (sprint) in Mount Shasta and then the Superman (mini sprint) the following Sunday at Rancho Seco.  I'm going into the first one as a training race. it has a single mass start of 300+ competitors so it should be an interesting race experience.

Good luck!  Have you done the Tinman?  Be careful of all the newbies out there.  That mass start concerns me with so many people that have never participated in a triathlon.  It's a fun race, though.

I have not done the Tinman before, but I figured I should since its the closest one to home. Only an hour drive or so. I expect I will swim wide on the course to avoid the worst of the mayhem, but I'm actually looking forward to experiencing the insanity of that swim. I'm going into it as a training event so I'm not really concerned with getting slowed down going around people.

Great races and rides everyone.

Thanks for keeping an eye on me today. The good news is that I did win the aquabike, but it was a battle the entire way.

The short story (I still owe a Timberman race report, and I'll try to get this one up as well):
The swim was BRUTAL again. It has to be the ocean swimming, but I have to figure it out. I swam 700 yards in a race last week in 8:34, but this week after 100 yards I was seriously screwed. I had a total panic attack, gasping for breath, seriously considered quitting the race. But I treaded water for a sec, had a quick conversation with a kayaker, and decided to get through best I could. I somehow got through the first half of the swim while never even submerging my face, drinking a TON of ocean water, and really not doing too well. I was never really in danger, so don't think that I was doing anything really stupid. I just had zero mojo. After that I just decided to suck it up and swim, and the last half actually went very well. I was passing a lot of people on the second half. This has to be mental, so I guess I'm doing more ocean swimming and more swimming in general if I'm going to do this race again.

Anyway, the tide was low and when I stood up my hamstrings said nope, we're not walking. They were tight/cramping like not able to even stand. I sat back in the water and stretched them out, and they loosened up enough to get me out of the water. My feet and hands were completely numb from the swim (water was 60 at the shore and 56 out by the kayaks for the across portion), so the long run to transition was interesting, The pros from the Oly were getting out about the same time and some of them went flying by me, so again it was more me than anything else.

The first 20-25 miles of the bike weren't much better as nothing would stay down, not even water. I was riding ok, but just couldn't really put the hammer down. Something clicked at that point and my stomach suddenly felt much better. I was able to up my power 15-20 watts, and I really crushed the last 30 miles. I passed the last aqua-biker with about 5 miles to go and put another minute and a half into him before the end. I think I ended up averaging a bit under 23 for the whole ride, so I'm very pleased with that result. And most importantly, no mechanical issues or anything interesting on the bike finally!!!!!

All in all a great day and a great lesson for me in persevering through whatever comes up and waiting for things to get better. Sorry, guess that wasn't all that short.

There have been a couple of great races today!

Derek, A 4 minute improvement is an amazing time over the same course from last year and 5th OA makes it a pretty amazing finish and mental boost.  Huge congratulations are in order for you!!  It sounds like you really killed the race today.  Let us know your splits and effort for the kilometers once you take a look at the data.

Warren,  For what appears to have been an almost disastrous day you really pulled it out!  Getting through the swim must have been truly tough mentally but puking on the bike and still being able to nail the hammer and grab the first OA podium is real guts and glory stuff.  Congrats!!

Tracy, Uhh?  Riding outdoors with diarrhea?  Yeah......NO!  I won't be making any of those decisions....EVER!

If anyone is looking for nutrition on long rides, I've been trying out infinit and really like it so far.

Sounds like you are getting dialed in well.  You have all kinds of time to prep for the race ahead.  You should be ready if you stay on target.  But I would agree with Tony about running off the bike.  even if you can get only a mile or two it will give you insights into how well your nutrition planning was.  There's nothing wrong with sticking to the plan you have in front of you either, just feeding you a little more info to help you off the bike on Oct 26.

BTW, I am truly looking forward to seeing you at line at that race.

Tony,  You are really settling into your fitness now and the adaptations to the hard work you've laid out.  I'll be watching, as will we all, on Sept 8 to see you get through that race and become.......Tony, THE IRONMAN!

Take the taper serious and try not to go stir crazy.  Stick to the plan and get to the line in 100% starting shape.  Make sure to plan your carb loading too.  The loading process will be for 3-4 days and you will most likely be slightly heavier by then too.  Those extra 2-3 pounds won't be a problem though because it should be getting your body to stockpile a little more for the race.

So now for my little exercise session today.......

I went out for my last planned 100+ ride today and I feel like I nailed it down pretty good.  I was able to hold almost all of the miles at IM effort. I had about 20 miles at HIM effort but even those miles were at the low end of that effort level.  As a matter of fact 15 of the miles were actually lower than I have raced a HIM but only slightly.

After I got off the bike I pulled a 4 mile run off and felt pretty good.  I felt my nutrition was pretty much right where it needed to be.  960 calories in all on the bike.  Overall it was a good day until.......

My toothache became horrible.  I will be calling the dentist first thing in the morning!!!  I am not sure I'll be able to eat anything until I see him.  What's worse?  We are headed to Florida on Thursday and I'm not sure what's going on with my tooth.  I hope this doesn't persist!

I hate you DIRK (in the most loving way).   Tell me why you're waiting a whole year to do an IM because you're so ready now.   Forget my statement about seeing you on the run as you head to the finish line and I'm just starting out.   I believe I'll still be out on the bike course when you're back home in Indiana!   Good on you for getting another century in.    Sorry about your tooth.  Funny thing is I started having tooth pain too and made an appointment for tomorrow.   I'll pray you can get in and get yours resolved quickly so as not to interrupt your time away with your bride and daughter.

Goodness gracious, WARREN.   That's scary to hear you had problems in the water.  So glad you took your mind over the matter, though.   Way to pull through.   Love the podium picture of you on Facebook with all your powerbars.

Dirk, those rides are crazy. I'm with Brenda. Sign up and do B2B with Will. There's no sense waiting and getting all worried and nervous and everything. Just do it now!

Thanks Brenda. The worst part is there was also a $25 gift cert for the race expo, but we didn't look in the glass until we got home!

Derek congrats on the PR in the 10K, 4 minutes is pretty freakin awesome. I'd say you killed it today.

Warren I'm sorry I didn't get to follow you today as I was out doing my finally century ride but was thinking about you. Congrats on winning the Aqua/Bike you really showed a lot of heart out there sticking with that swim and persevering. That sounded like a very tough swim and I'm sure alot of people probably would have just called it a day right then and there. Glad it came together for you on the bike and you were able to smoke the rest of the field and bring it home.

The Junkies are proud of both you guys today.

Brenda - ha! when I saw Dirk's post on fb (the pic of his watch showing 100+ miles in 5 hrs)... I typed in a comment that simply said "I hate you" but then got distracted before I could post it... ha

Dirk - I hate you

Warren - very nice job!

Well, I think I may need some intervention here... So my eating pretty much sucks all the time, but every time I hit a recovery week in my plan it gets even worse as I seem to think I can "take a break" and eat/drink whatever I want... I've been eating donuts, fast food, candy... and drinking cokes like it's liquid gold... someone slap me! ha! Tony, what are you eating???

Dirk another good ride for you today and run off the bike. Geez I'd agree with Warren and Brenda that you really could do an IM this year and do well. I hope the tooth isn't serious and you get in for an appointment. Thanks for the advice as well. I'm trying not to think about the race too much and am hoping to just stay busy getting organized for it. There's nothing more I can do from a fitness perspective now it's all done. I need to get as much rest as I can from here on out.

I did my last century ride today, 100.43 miles in 5:40 and a 2 mile run off the bike. First let me say this was supposed to be an easy paced group ride. It didn't turn out that way. We started with 16 riders and ended with 12 but the group kept up a pretty strong pace so I had to ride harder than I was expected to just to keep up. I hung off the back of the peloton for two reasons, one I got to ride aero at times and two I didn't want to take advantage of the draft. It won't help me in Wisconsin. I can't complain this was good for me even though I had to go harder than I would've liked and we did hit quite a bit of hills the end of the ride which was a big benefit for me.

Afterwards I figured my run would suck but surprisingly I ran faster than I wanted to. I think I ran a 10:41 the first mile which was way too fast (you can laugh now) for me. I've been training in the 11 to 12 mpm range for IMWI. I was surprised by that but was able to dial it back for the second mile. I thought I was going to be toast coming off the bike but I was good to go. Not sure I could have run 26.2 today but I was able to run which was reassuring after get killed on the bike.

All the hard work is done the focus now will be on resting and just doing enough to stay sharp and busy so I don't drive myself crazy worrying about the race for the next two weeks.

Will I need to plead the 5th on my IM eating habits. Let me see, Oreo cookes, cake, ice cream and my favorite Ironman training supplement is Coca Cola LOL! Otherwise I've been eating fairly well LOL. Yeah Will I don't normally eat all that stuff as I am pretty disciplined with my eating but for Ironman I can't help it. I need some sugar as part of my training diet. I'm going to miss my chocolate chocolate oreo's, snickers and my Coca Cola when it's all over but for now I am enjoying them in moderation.

Warren, I know how you feel about struggling w/ the swim and way to push thru it...and making up for it w/ a great bike ride. #1

Derek, good 10K race, 5th is awesome!

Will and Tony and everyone else, have ya'll read "Finding Ultra" by Rich Roll, I haven't finished reading it yet but it is an awesome book so far.

Wife had a person in her group this weekend doing IM Louisville, I am so sad but he din't make the cut off for the swim. He is a good biker and great runner, I just feel so sorry for him...

Dirk, hope the tooth is better.

Very little training for me this weekend as we had rental house issues.

Tony - Your training for ironman distance has been really inspiring. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. I'll be racing a mini sprint about 200 miles from home on the day of IMWI so I wont be able to follow your progress, but I know you are going to do great. I'll be looking forward to seeing your race report.

Vero no worries I appreciate your support as well as all the Junkies. I'd not have gotten as far as I have without it. I know there are a ton of races happening on Sept. 8th, it seems like everyone I know is racing that day lol. Good look with your sprint tri and have a safe trip. Trust me I'll be thinking about you guys alot that day.

I will be suffering, along with Jonathan, in the Pumpkinman Half that day. But I will definitely follow you after that. Matt better be doing a half that same day. Busy day for the junkies.

Warren I'll have four friends coming up to do the Pumpkinman Half as well on Sept. 8th. My friend Wynn will be doing the aqua/bike and his wife will be doing the half. I didn't realize you and Jonathan will be doing it, very cool. You're right lot's of races going on 9/8 the Junkies are going to be well represented nationally that day!

Way cool. If we can say hi, somehow get their bib numbers or something to us.

By the way, the long range forecast is showing a cooling trend at IMWI already! I'm sure you're not checking the weather every half hour yet!

I'm not racing that day!  I am directing a 5K/10K, though.  There are usually about 100 people between both races.  It has the potential to grow.  This year, we have a new partnership with the county parks and both courses are USATF certified.  I'm not sure I want it to get bigger.  This race will be in it's 30th year!  Wow!

I'll be able to spy on your progress when I get home. Tongue out

Well, the verdict is in.  Beginning tomorrow morning I'll be working on my Ohio hillbilly toofless look.  The tooth that has been causing me issues needs to be removed.  I have included a preview pic of my new look....................

Ok.  So really it's a molar in my upper jaw.  I am certainly not looking forward to having my tooth removed but it's cracked all the way into the root.  My dentist suggested that a root canal would only prolong the inevitable and the tooth would have to come out sooner or later.  There's more to the story but I've shortened it
