So, did you decide to do the HIM in Las Vegas?  I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the Silverman HIM in November which starts at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, NV.

No I'm just doing the sprint this year.  I'm planning on doing the HIM there next year though.  I'd like to do Silverman next year as well but I obviously have no idea what my recovery will be like at that time.

thanks for all the tips on the swim vid!  A couple notes/answers:  Yes, I can see that I turn too much to breathe.  I've been told this (and can now see it for myself in the vid), but am not quite sure what to do different...  I also have sinking legs (as you guys also pointed out).  To partially counter this, I really fucus on burying my head.  As a result of the deeper head, I feel like I have to turn more to breathe.  I know when I'm really swimming hard and going faster, I'm up a little higher, a bit flatter (less rotation), my legs are up on the surface, and I don't have to lift as much to breathe.  I wish I had a vid of me on a hard interval to look at.

This sinking is also why I'm 15 seconds/100 faster with a wetsuit on...

Dave, the elbow leading thing is interesting, I tried to experiment a bit with that today, it's very awkward!  In fact, on my left side my shoulder popped out a few times when I tried to keep my elbow high.  This is a recurring thing for me from an old injury, my shoulder goes in and out real easily.  I'm going to keep trying it, but am not too confident I can do too much about it, at least on the left side.

Tim, I really focus on not crossing over, I used to have even more rotation but have worked on reducing it and trying to eliminate the cross.  I *think* I do pretty well now, but it's so hard to know what is really happening...  This again is one of the aspects of my stroke that improves as I up the pace.  I get a little flatter, less rotation, and less tendancy to cross over.

my mom came again today and shot more vids, I'll look at them and see if any are of my going faster, or of different angles.

High elbow is really tough to explain - search for "high elbow swimming" on youtube and you'll get lots of help. I like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXsE7apdQMs

If it causes your shoulder to pop out, I totally understand not wanting to swim that way. I can't imagine...

Bold move trying to true those wheels by yourself.  I do all my own maintenance and repair except for truing wheels.  I just don't have the patience or the eye for it.

With all the Internet shops out there, the smart proprietors of LBSs have come to discover that customer service and labor are they can step themselves apart from the competition.

When do you get the new bike?

High elbow is a confusing concept.  While I think I'm better at this now, I still catch myslef dropping my elbows at times in the pool.

I might of shared this here before, but I like the analogy of climbing a ladder.  You don't ascend a ladder with your arms extended in front of you.  Instead, you break at the elbows to pull your chest into the to ladder.  This movement and positioning is similar to how you would keep a high elbow in swimming.

A good drill to work on for this is swimming in fists.  If you aren't catching with your forearms, you will really feel it while swimming in fists.  As you get better at the technique, you will start to fell water turbulence off of your forearms.

Not 100% sure yet. All I know is Cervelo has my frame and is sending it to my bike shop.

Well... I decided to spend a little money.  I went to a local running store and had orthotics made for my shoes.  I also decided to pick up a new pair of shoes.  I really like my trail shoes, so I decided to try a street shoe from the same company.  Finding the right road shoe has been a nightmare for me!  Hopefully, this will be the one.

Thanks for the vid link Dave, I'll play with high elbows again today.  Tim, I'll try the fists thing too, but fear I may possibly come to a complete stop... Sealed

Here's another one of me from a more head on angle.  I'm also going 'faster' here, that's about my race pace, just under 2:00/100, and I've got a little kick going.  I'm in a baggy swimsuit here instead of my usual jammers, just cause there's a bunch of other moms around that I know and I feel stupid walking around the pool in my jammers...  I can definately feel a drag with the trunks, and I can't push off the wall or they will fall off.

Too funny!  But, what would be worse: walking around in jammers, or having your shorts come off in the water?

No crossover there.  That looked better.  The one thing that stuck out was at times it looked like your hand, forearm, elbow all entered the water at the same time.  Like Dave was suggesting earlier, this is where the fingertip drag drill will help.  Remember, air provides less resistance than water.  Therefore, we want our hands to enter the water about 10-12 inches in front of our head followed by forearms then hands.  I'm guilty of this too, especially when I start to fatigue, my hand entry will start creeping back toward the top of my head.

It seems like you have made some big improvements over a couple months!  Keep at it.

Good morning guys and gal!  I was looking over everyone's training logs this morning and it seems everyone is progressing nicely!

I was looking at my calender too and can't believe I'm just over a week out from my next race.  This XTERRA in Tahoe is definately a big race for me.  How I finish here will determine my race schedule for the rest of the season.

Just checked water temps for Lake Tahoe and the area we will be swimming is still at a nice, balmy 48-50 degrees!  While Tahoe never gets very warm, the late snow this year has definately made an impact on the water temps.

Just turned in my registration forms for the August and September sprints I'm doing.  We secured some local cash to cover the reg fees so I race for free until the pot o' gold dries up!

Yeah I'm stoked.  Hopefully it will be available again next year to pay for some of the Oly and HIM races I want to do also.  Makes me want to get out and train more knowing it's someone else's money!  Well I guess technically it's my money too.  I pay my taxes!

We haven't had a QOTD in awhile.  Let's talk taper!  I was reading in...last month's Triathlon mag I think, and there was an article about how 3 week tapers are the fault of marathon runners from in the 70s that were overtraining and basically needed that much time to recover.  Personally I have found anything more than a week more than I need. Opinions?

Agreed.  The largest tapers are found in marathon plans.  Usually a three week taper is common since it is ill advised to run more than 20 miles without a three week periodization.  These plans often contain three 20-22 mile runs seperate by three weeks of reduced volume then the taper to race day.

Now, as for my personal approach to races.  "B" races, no taper.  For olympics and shorter, I usually do a light workout two days prior to the race, then usually nothing but yoga, stretching, and foam rolling the day before the race.  I don't tend to cut volume preceeding the race, but will pay attetion to reducing intensity.  However, this doesn't mean I'm going to go out and do my long run for the week three days prior to a race either.

This is my approach.  I don't have any evidence to support this approach.  Its just something that works for me.  I believe everyone will react differently to tapering.  Some people will need greater reductions to be fresh for the race, while others can go straight into the event.  It comes down to experimentation and finding what works for you.

Well... it looks like I have to follow in Jay's footsteps and buy some bike parts.

I had a little wipe out on the road today.  I had a truck in front of me that kept drifting into the bike lane.  So, when traffic started to slow, I got out of the saddle to get around.  Well, as I was passing and keeping an eye on him, I failed to see the pot hole in front of me.  I went down at about 25 MPH.  I ended up with road rash on my right side, but more frustrated about my bike and embarassed.  Ruined a new pair of shorts, tore my saddle, bend a brake level, and to add insult to injury, a flat tire.  Expensive trainig ride today!

Looks like I'll be getting those integrated aerobars sooner than I expected.

Now, the even bigger question, do I still brave the pool later?

Brrrr! I LOVE lake tahoe (especially north shore) and I LOVE triathlons but somehow I'm not jealous that this one isn't on my race calendar. =) Good luck Tim, I know it's a big race for you. Hopefully you have a little time to acclimate to the elevation! I'll be in Incline Village for the 4th of July weekend so maybe I'll have to bring the wetsuit and test the waters myself. =)

AOTD - I've never been confident in my taper plans. I think I did a week for my half mary last year. My training plan says 3 weeks for my upcoming HIM but that just feels like a TON of time. 2 weeks feels about right - maybe cut to 85% of volume in week 1, 75% of volume in week 2?

Holy crap, thank god you're ok.  That sounds like a scary spill to take.  I'd rather be replacing bike parts than body parts ya know?  Good job keeping an eye on the whackadoo in the truck though.

Yikes! Count your blessings...at 25mph, there are a plethora of ways this could have been worse. I'm glad you're not too hurt.

Personally, I'd skip the pool time. Get some neosporin on your road rash and see how you feel tomorrow.

I've never taken a fall off the bike. I know it'll happen eventually which really scares me. One can only hope to escape with only a bit of road rash.
