...Well, that didn't last long...I had planned to not do any specific training or tri-related workouts this week; I was just going to relax and fully recover. Apparently no one told my body that, as I woke up this morning and realized that I REALLY want to get out and train today! So, after classes this afternoon, I am going to take advantage of the university's indoor track and get a bit of a run in...Go figure, I guess I really am addicted to this stuff.

Oh yeah, I also really want turkey burgers! I know, off topic....I wanted one last night, but didn't want to go shopping for the ingredients...I have an amazing recipe--a 'clean eating' turkey burger--turkey mixed with eggs, plus high protein cereal and a bit of milk and seasoning--cooked up on the Foreman Grill---the most moist and flavorful burgers EVER!!! Yup, I'm hitting the store tonight. YUM!

Oh and I'm leaning towards not doing my tri this year because a) I'm not sure I'll have the $$$, b) I've been neglecting the bike again and haven't got in my 70 min (hopefully 10k) ride yet and c) The brick I did last week (full) left me with an "almost walking" pace on the run so I'm a bit concerned about speed. I wouldn't mind being DFL but looking at the times from last year I'm wondering if they have any "cut-off" times for the different stages - especially the bike as I'm seriously slower than even the DFL bike person from last year. OH well I may aim the race they have at the same place at the end of the series.

Is your tri in November??  You may have some time to still get the training in, but definitely contact the race director to voice your concerns about your bike time.  One thing I've suggested to people in our tri club...if you decide not to race that day, still do the distances!!!!!  So, commit to doing those distances that day, even if you're not in the race.  It's a tough decision, to race or not to race, but I think committing to the distances on that day will help make your decision a little easier.

I saw an ad in a swim magazine that said, "Sometimes I wish I had swam faster, but I never regret a race."  Keep that in mind! =)

Hey everyone!!!

No more downer flood stories, I promise. =)  I got out for a run after work.  The weather was BEAUTIFUL today!!!  I saw a guy on a bike with a t-shirt that said, "One less car." I thought that was pretty cool.  What's cooler?  I got my average pace down to under 10 minutes. HURRAY!  When I was in shape last year, I could hold a low 8 minute pace for a nice distance (like a 9 mile race that I did in March 2010), but this year it's been tough, tough, tough to get that speed and endurance back.  I think if I keep this up than I can rock out to a nice race before the year is done.  I fare better in cooler weather anyways. =)

How's everyone else??

Kate's race report is up!!!  One thing I wanted to bring up to the group is fartlek training.  Google it!! =)  For swimming, through in sets of EBEH.  Easy. Build. Easy. HARD.  In the beginning, swim 25 yards/meters , easy, 25 build (start off at a medium pace and then finish the length with a sprint pace), then 25 yards easy, 25 yards sprint.  It's a GREAT way to build your tolerance for differing speeds.  That sprint at the end gets you to HTFU so you can get used to pushing yourself when you get tired (let me tell you, if you repeat 100s of EBEH you will have one heck of a workout!).

During running I do 30 seconds of above race pace every 5 minutes to get my legs to turnover... it's long enough to get the muscles twitching faster, but it's not long enough to completely wipe you out.  Same thing can be done with riding, but I'd make the hard efforts a little longer...1-2 minutes.

Let me know what you think!  I'd venture to say Mike is ready for a set of 10 x 100 EBEH and Curt, too!

Ok BT is eating my posts again.

Mike - good luck with your race

Curt - good luck getting back in to training.

Sara - I do some fartleking on the bike/run to avoid being hit by cars etc right now but I may look at putting some more structured sessions in. Not sure I'm ready for the EBEH yet but I may look at it once I've finished the beginner swim program.

Not sure if its logistically possible, but I'll pay for your race fee - you need to be out there. Lets not let that stop you. You are an inspiration. Go do it! PM me if you need to, but the offer stands.

And if Mike won't can't front you the entire amount, I'll kick in as well -- do the race!!!!

Got home a bit early and headed out for a run.  Set a new PR with an 8:07 pace!  Check points were 9:43, 4:03, 4:18, 9:31.  At the turn around new I was on pace for the PR, but was feeling it a bit.  Ran the next 1/2 mile in what felt like an easy pace.  Saw the 4:18 time and new I still had a shot, so I turned the dial up 1/2 notch.  Pushed harder for the last 1/4 to make sure I got it.  Made it by 14 seconds.

So... The bad news is that my training hours per week are down, the good is that I'm still getting in a couple each week; and, with the focus on the run, seem to be making some gains.  Will be glad when mid-November gets here and I have some more time available (working on prepping for the CFP exam in mid-November).

Race was a mixed bag. Awful swim (due to 4 foot seas) but kick butt bike, and the run, while not fast, felt like I could go all day. Overall time was about 1:13 (.25/11/3.1). RR when I get official times.

No kidding! . I had another race this year within 5 minutes of my house, so no need to go far for a good race.

So......where did everyone go?

Think it's the post-race season slump.  I've bounced back OK -- going to at least do my runs every week so I'll keep in some sort of shape.  Swim the other day was encouraging/discouraging.  + was that the form felt great and my times were not bad for a few 100's.  - was how tired I was!  Oh well.

You are likely right, Curt. For me, I've been dead tired all week, and now have some really painful knee thing that came out of nowhere. I'm taking a few days, maybe a week, off from just about everything to just rest, get some extra sleep, and figure out what to do next. I'll likely get into some type of S/B/R routine with an emphasis on run, as I need it.

I'm already excited about next year, though! I'm hoping to stay healthy this off season and not struggle with an injury like this past winters foot fiasco. I'd like to get to the starting line of race #1 (whatever it may be) ready to go, and perform at my best. I'd also like to lose 20 pounds

Good idea on taking the time off Mike -- best to listen to your body.  Sure that you'll be ready to go by spring.  And I hear you on the weight thing -- would like to drop 10-15 myself.

Tonight was off, but last night was a great run.  3.4 miles out and back and was only 3 seconds off on the pace.  Felt really comfortable on the run AND muscles are not hurting the day after any more.  Looks like around 15 miles a week is what I'll need to build strength / become comfortable with running.  Now to figure out the same for the bike and run....

So much for the time off thing. Went to the pool this AM and did about 2200 yards. This included the dreaded 12x100 EBEH intervals. My form was iffy most of the time, but I averaged around 1:43 or so per 100.  I couldn't take another day off, and figured a good swim would be low impact, and it was. Knee feeling much better, so whatever ache/pain was there is now gone awayy. Weather report for the weekend looks rainy, so I'm going to do a AM bike trainer ride, and sunday a slow, easy run.

Curt, your running sounds like you are ready to crank it up a bit, and maybe move to 20 MPW?

I cringed when I read about your experience drinking the water. Blech!  For what it's worth, there are open water swimmers who do run OWS clinics.  There are specific tips and tricks to swimming with the waves that a competitive swimmer with my background just doesn't know.  Just double check the coaches' background before signing up so that you can find out if they swam in open water competitively.

So......where did everyone go?

I'm still trying to grasp life in post-flood Binghamton.  The week of the flood I did a little bit of volunteering, which wasn't hard work, but I think the emotional toll of seeing people so stressed and seeing destroyed businesses and homes day after day after day is hard.  We still have mud and dust and piles of garbage and water stained buildings everywhere.  I've been trying to get out and run, but there's an advisory about contiminants in the air. The YMCA where I swim still has another 3-4 weeks before they open the pool.  They had to replace stuff that was damaged. Blech!

On the brighter side...

I have to say that with just a few weeks of consistent run training, I've dropped some time off of my average, which is really encouraging!!!  My goal is to go a sub 9 min pace on my new 5k route by the first week of October.  I think once I hit that I'll be motivated to sign up for a race where I can aim for a sub 8 min pace. =)

As I'm struggling to get to the pool and/or on the bike, going to see what I can do to run every day.  While it won't help with the other two disciplines, it will hopefully build the run.  Last night felt really good -- did my standard out and back route and had a big time negative split while running comfortably.

May not help directly with the other 2 disciplines but it could help indirectly by getting you motivated again.

Ok BT is eating my posts again.

Sara - I'll try and find RD contact details but I've had 2 weeks off with a cold/ follow up health issues so not really sure what the training deal is anymore. I'm still tossing up whether to do my 5k race 2 weeks before (weekend after next) too as I'm going back a couple of weeks and will only have a longest run of 2.75 miles before hand - being about a month prior and 2.5 the week before.

Mike/Curt - Thanks for the offer, I'll let you know what happens. I'm not sure how the logistics would work either - besides which you'll be paying more as our dollar is slightly stronger right now, lol.

Mike -- Nice swim (again!).  Gotta rewatch my TI videos and get back at it.

Suzie -- Don't give up / tough it out

Sara -- Sure you'll be back to PR level in no time.  I'd kill to do what you can/do -- it's darn impressive.

Ran this AM but not yesterday (pasta binge at dinner killed me!).  Son ran today.  He ran the open versus varsity race (i.e. not as strong of competition).  He won!!!!  It was great to see as he ran an incredibly smart/strategic race.  Now you gotta understand this kid NEVER does that.  He was pumped pre and post race.  The course was wicked hilly AND it rained/was a mudfest.  He started running 4 years back when we were in Belgium and he loves the hills, mud and rain so it was "his day".  He's doing a great job with keeping positive.  He's at a level where he would be in the top 5 of all but 4 teams in the state -- unfortunately one of those is his high school, the other is #6 in the nation/#1 in the state, the third the legendary York program, and the 4th the best "small school" in the state.  There's a good chance over the next several weeks he'll actually crack the top 5.  If not, he'll be there next year.  AND he's getting A's/B's in his classes which are all AP/honors.

Have to brag on my oldest as well -- she's going to finish her BS in mech. eng. at Univ of Ill this spring.  In three years with straight A's.  Call earlier this week was to let me know she's applying to grad school at Berkely, Cal Tech, Stanford, Illinois, Carneghie Mellon, and MIT!!!  She's a sharp one.

And the youngest is doing great in school / following big sis' lead.

Have a great Sunday.

Wow! You have some amazing kids--and every right to be a proud parent!

I have been working on setting up a training plan for a 'Down N' Dirty Mud Run' on October 30th--I started following said plan on Thursday afternoon....and then immediately fell sick with a NASTY cold...this thing has hit me harder than any colds I had last year, and sudden too! I was fine--feeling pretty awesome--on Thursday, until about 8:30, and then I thought I was having a severe allergy attack--stuffed up nose and sinus thing--I ended up not sleeping from Thurs through Fri morning cause the pain in my head (ie. sinuses) was so bad--then on Friday, I called in sick to work, my voice went out, nose is still jacked up, and my throat and chest were both sore and full of gunk. Today, I hobbled into work, but it was the same a yesterday PLUS fevers! Ick....I'm NOT planning on working tomorrow, I would much rather try to sleep and recover.

Hopefully, this thing will go away as quickly as it came on so I can get back to training!

My best to all of you---you are all inspirational to me---even when you guys aren't training, its something about the love of the sport....you all just keep me going!

Woohoo on the run. You'll be back at and beyond 10k PR before you know it

Curt - MMM Pasta binge, lol. congrats to all your kids on their achievements

Kate - Hope you get better soon.

Finally got a run in. Slow (20:49 pace) but at least it's done. Now I just need to get back on track with the biking and swimming. MOstly biking. I tried to set up a new plan with my new membership - whic Marmadaddy gave me as a present a little while ago - and it wouldn't accept my bike speed (roughly 5.5mph on average) - it's lower level is 8mph. So I need to work on speeding up.

So my question is:

Would this help me get faster:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1671

Note I don't currently have a bike computer as the one I bought from the dept store doesn't work on my bike as the magnet they use to attach the sensor to the wheel doesn't stay on very well.
