my pediatrician told me that honey works just as well as over the counter cough syrup. he said otc cough syrup is mainly just thick sugary stuff to coat your childs throat, and once coated, will ease coughing. if you were getting a perscription, that's probably better, especially if it's a "chest cough" like the croup. my nephew that just turned one had the croup, and after about 10 days she ended up taking him to the ER because his fingers and lips and stuff were turning blue. they ended up having to give him a steroid. poor kid.
henry isn't really acting sick yet. no fever, he's not being fussy (not any more than usual anyway- i swear the kid was BORN fussy) just this cough. maybe we can head it off, who knows. i didn't get to run though. tomorrow for SURE!

speaking of being born fussy--i'll attach a pic of him the day he was born.

the "rules of lent" LOL if you want to call them rules. i am not a Catholic, but my family has celebrated lent for as long as i can remember. the religious meaning behind it is that you sacrifice something, in honour of Christ who sacrificed for us. so you don't necesarily have to GIVE something up, you just make some kind of sacrifice for 40 days. (there's also something in the religious part of it that it's kind of like when Jesus was lead in to the wilderness for 40 days to be tempted of the devil-i think different denominations do it differently, i've heard both ways) anyway, the point is that you sacrifice something for 40 days. something that tempts you. i've been kind of on the fence as far as giving up meat, mostly because i really LIKE things like chicken and tuna, i like all kinds of meat, but for health's sake i'm giving it up for 40 days.

it doesn't have to be a heavy religious thing at all, it's just something my family has always done, so i'm throwing it out there.

very impressive Lyssa! I am catholic and try to go as often as possible...not been so good lately! ;( but you did fabulous in your explanation...ready to come and give a sermon at our church next week to explain it to the rest of the denonimanation...I am sure there are a bunch who are in church that have no idea what Lent is truly all about! YOU GO GIRL!

hope the midget feels better soon! and too funny about his face...he does look a little disgruntled in that pic...sure he isnt taking a poo!?!?

Well happy Monday everyone.   I already have a feeling it is going to be one of those weeks when work takes over.  I planned a swim after work, but didn't leave the office until a half hour before the pool was going to close, and it just didn't seem worth it to me to swim for 20 minutes or so.  So I blew it off.  But now I won't get another chance to swim until Friday (long story), and that will mean only one swim this week.  What happened to my resolve????

On a brighter note, I guess if I have to work a lot and not train as much, at least I'll be better rested for the HM on Sunday.

is anyone else thinking of lent yet? i know it's coming up here pretty quickly although, i can't remember when exactly. does anyone else "give up something for lent"?  i don't every year, and in fact, right now i can't remember the last time i did, but i've been riding the fence with the meatless thing for about a month now, so i am going to try to go meatless for lent. i'm not including things like milk, eggs, or cheese (although i think i will eventually give those things up too) i am including fish though. i don't normally eat a lot of fish, but i do like me a tuna sandwich sometimes

is it today? in today the start of lent?!? bah! now i gotta go find a calendar. what is it, 40 days before Easter? oh brother, i'm totally hopeless!! LOL

I'm not really religious, but I'm doing the no-sugar challenge that starts 3/1!

Edited to add: The no-sugar challenge INCLUDES diet soda. I am going give it a go. (I am addicted to Diet Dew. Seriously.)

So I had a pretty stellar day!

I really didn't want to go to the gym over my lunch hour, but I made myself go. I did 15 mins. hard on the elliptical, and then lifted weights. I felt pretty good because the weights I normally lift were too light -- and even some of them I upped the weight and it felt too light. Sweet!

Then after work, I went swimming. My training partner couldn't make it, though.

I saw this guy in the slow lane doing the WORST freestyle I've ever seen (aside from one unfortunate YMCA swimmer in New Jersey). I thought to myself, "if that guy is slower than I am, then I'm really in trouble." But I was faster. Whew!

But my times were really discouraging. 2:40/100.

Last month, I was down to 2:03 or something/100, which is better but still...

So training partner and I are going to try the YMCA's swimming lessons. Only $13/each. So we'll see. I took pricey 12 week lessons that obviously haven't helped me much, so I figure this can't hurt to try. We're also thinking about possibly doing the Total Immersion camp as well.

I know how you feel. I am a comort eater......so if I am sad I snack.  Normally I go directly to the sweets, but I am known to attack the tortilla chips. Then I kick myself for eating it (then the next time I am upset, I repeat ! lol........ But this running/biking/swimming makes me like the way my body is changing. I am not perfect, but I am much less likely to go after the food whe I know it will hurt all teh work I have put in.
WE WILL GET THIS GIRL!!!

Hi team!

Does anyone have any funny stories to share from this weekend?  I can't think of any now, but maybe someone else does?

LOL...my pup snores too...not always so when he does, it just cracks me right up.

So I was trying to think up a funny story from the weekend...there is always something but I couldn't think of anything from the weekend...last week however... two stories...

first one- out with a run with the dog when we see an older gent walking on the sidewalk, Linkin stops to say hello as he always does being Mr. Social, and old guy says,"Why are you running, are you late for dinner?" Well wouldn't you know it, but 'dinner' is the only word Linkin knows other than  'breakfast'....next thing, I am getting pulled (more than usual) with arm out of socket (ok exaggeration) the rest of the way home where he head butts the door (wishful thinking that it might be open) and then runs straight to his dish.

second- out to the pool and excited to try a new swim top- little racer back number that I picked up at a big sale at Pata-gucci (aka Patagonia). I didn't try it on at the store as hubby was getting a little restless and dog was in the store trying to beg treats from the sales people. Anyhoo...jump in the pool and I go horizontal and push off the wall and the top just catches water like a sail. No doubt that I would have flashed someone had they been swimming at me with their goggles on at that time. Didn't bring a back up suit- who woulda thunk that a swim suit could double as a sail except it is causing more drag than anything. Ended up pulling out my pony-tail and stuffing my hair back under my swim cap and tried to tie off a bit of the straps. Mediocre solution at best so I finished my lengths- called it resistance swimming and gave the top away.

oooh- from this weekend- I had a giggle... watching my dog play tug with Lexi-loo (dog I was sitting) and Lex gets smart and sits herself down on the doggie bed and lets Linkin pull her across the floor. Not sure if you can picture it...but pretty darn funny.

No doubt there are some funnier ones out there! Do share!

Lent eh? (oops...there's the Canuck in me). Didn't grow up in a religious family but did participate in the tradition of Lent with some university friends. Chips and ice cream are my big vices....I had my fortune read once and was told that I had ice cream in my aura. She actually stopped mid-fortune to ask why there were DQ cones floating around me. I would be willing to forego the chips for the duration....how long are we committing for? It would be best for my health as I believe the end comes about the same time as my first tri. Who else is in?

I know something i wanna try again: sour aple martini's...slurp! My weekend was nice, the hotel wasn't...bad bad matress (springs in my back and a big dip that made me roll into my hubby all night...hum maybe that's why my dreams were all about mountain climbing or a run on 4%incline on the dreadmill...

Anyhoo and staying away from martini's and sloooowwly getiing back to the running plan. right leg was pouting but got it into a better mood. Last week of mentoring my OT student, I will be sad to see her go.

So, report 1 of this week done! log done, over and out...to bed

Had a decent bike ride this morning and got to the health club for some weights and a short swim.   It is ugly outside as I type - a combination of snow and rain.  Hopefully, it will stop soon and not turn into snow.   Julie: the weather folks are not listening to your claims of spring!

Total Immersion:  I've got the latest freestyle DVD and have been working on the TI technique for a while now.   I believe I am slowly improving.  I should probably consider attending a camp, but am not comfortable enough with my language abilities to try learning in Japanese.   If you want a view of TI, take a look at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJpFVvho0o4

OR

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqBrmOf-UDc&feature=related

This is how I want my stroke to look.  Needless to say, I have a ways to go yet.

Yvonee: loved the new swim suit story.   I know the feeling.  I still recall jumping into a hotel swimming pool in Thailand and having my shorts end up down at my knees.   Of course, nobody was watching (or so I like to believe).

The TI camps are kinda pricey - not through the Y. But I seriously need help, and nothing else I've done so far has done it. (lessons, being videotaped, etc.) 1.2 miles is a long way when you can't swim ... I know I have to be doing several things wrong, but don't know what/how to fix.

Also, I could use a mini-vacation from all the stress I'm under. The spouse would laugh at me that I would consider swimming for 3 days a vacation, but I'd love it!

OK, here's a funny story for you, embarrassing thing for me.

I've been bringing water to work with lime. One of my favorite bottles is a pretty green with a small opening at the top. I put the lime in it -- the end -- and had to shove it through to get it into the opening. And didn't give it a second thought.

So last night I'm preparing my food for work, and it occurred to me: I'm not going to be able to get this lime out of the bottle.

I was stabbing it with a knife, a fork, all to the amusement of the spouse. I had to laugh at myself. I really have no common sense sometimes.
