kromanowski - 2009-10-06 10:34 AM Question of the Day: Does anyone else have a mental block when it comes to going beyond a certain distance?  And if you did and have pushed past it how did you do it?

Mine is the 6 mile mark...I am fine running 5 miles, 6 miles I have done once or twice and am reasonably ok but I (mentally) freak out when I think about doing anything more...I have never gone further than six.

I have a mental block when running, but it isn't at a certain distance. I feel great when I'm running away from home, as soon as I turn around to come back I suddenly feel sluggish and it is so much harder to run. It doesn't matter what the distance is this happens with almost every run. I'm soon going to be at the point where I just run then call someone to come get me.

Great report! Keep it up with your training, and next time make sure you get pics of the pace booty! You know, to help inspire you for the next race and stuff...

I don't know about having a mental block, but before I started getting back into shape this summer I had only run over 3 miles a few times in my life. This was mainly due to the fact I had always been more of a football/baseball/basketball type athlete and endurance sports were new to me. Luckily, a friend of mine talked me into running with her at work (one of the perks of being in the military - getting to run while on the clock) and she started talking me into distances of 4, 5, 6 miles.

I still haven't gone over 6.5, but I am now able to do those runs solo and I plan on continuing to add mileage as I train for my first HM this winter. Here's to running through walls!

serendipity - 2009-10-06 3:31 AM Good morning!  It let the dogs out this morning and it wasn't raining! Cool

Lots to get done this morning, but I've got it all planned out to get my run in while the laundry is drying.  For my warm-up I'll be pushing the vacuum around.  Teaching yoga this afternoon and evening, with a trip to the doctor with my daughter in between because she's got an earache that won't go away.

I guess I'd better get moving!  (In case I don't get back to the computer until late, I'm making chickpea curry in the crockpot for dinner.)

who let the dogs out???

WHO

WHO WHO WHO-WHO?

sorry but I couldnt resist!

Assuming by your post about a treadmill - if indoors on a treadmill I find it impossible because the distance is so easy to find out without any work at all.

Outdoors - just go for a run.  Don't think about how far you are going to go - just run.  Don't worry about the time or distance and pick a route that you believe to be over 6 miles but not exactly sure.  Do the run and then go route map it to find the distance.

The key is not worrying about how far you have run already.  If you can run 5&6 miles you can easily do 10 miles!

Most of my running currently is outside...the treadmill will only be for when I am working 12-15 hour days and don't want to run thru the ghetto at 9pm...

Maybe the next time I am not running my usual path I will do that...just run...when I run my usual routes I know the distances based on landmarks so I will have to get off the usual route to not know how far I have gone, but that is a great idea.

disturbed275 - 2009-10-06 4:26 AM For the record, stairs are a vile, evil creation.

haha...were you standing at the bottom looking up just like in that video I sent? that is sooo true. In fact the parking they had all the athletes/runners park in for the hm was up a set of 20 or more stairs....if you did not walk up them..you had to go around a block to this ramp....there were only a few brave runners who climbed the stairs..most walked the block (and I did too!) no stairs for me!

and now the question of the day!?? how many stairs? and how long did it take you? oh and were you going up...or down those stairs?

I wonder if Stacie got stuck in her spare room/closet with all the junk and her family is looking for her?

i'm here.  i'm here.  i'm here!

the beast of a room wasnt as beastly as i thought.

a bag for garbage.

a bag for Goodwill.

a bag for my friend whose son is a few years younger than my youngest.

and (ashamed to admit it) Christmas decorations that my dh STILL needs to put up in the attic.

i suppose he's figuring that in 2 1/2 months he'll have to take them down from the attic, so why bother.  LOL.

once i get all the bags outta there and get on my dhs case for procrastinating, it will be an empty room.

why we even bothered buying a 4 bedroom house, when we had a perfectly fine 3 bedroom.

we thought it would be nice for the boys to all have their own rooms (and im sure at some point they will)

but my middle and my youngest have been sharing a room since my youngest was born.

sometimes now they even end up in the same bed together even though theres bunkbeds.

ahhhh.  brotherhood.

stacieb

And the problem with that is?  Ahh - let him leave them there until this year and make sure they get put up in the attic after this holiday season - but then again I am a male and I believe in procrastination (except for training purposes )

ah male reasoning.  gotta love it.

i half thought i should just store the decorations in the double doored closet that is in the room since its empty.  save us both the trouble of getting them in and out of the attic.

hee!

I heart BBQ baked chicken, and I'm only 3 1/2ish hours from Pittsburgh. If you have leftovers...

i wanted to buy 3 bone-in chicken breasts, but they were having a sale on the GINORMOUS family pack so i bought that instead.

i think theres like 6-8 chicken breasts in the pckg. and for my family thats WAY TOO MUCH!

baked red potatoes.

and green beans and salad.

I know it is late but dinner was Applebees 2 for 20 (DD wanted steak for her birthday).  So I had the 9oz Sirloin (ate half and have the other part for lunch today - yummy!), cheesy mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, onion rings, and some boneless chicken wings.

Needless to say I was pretty full last night but still found room for ice cream

I havent been to applebees in ages...I love thier margaritas...and the way they serve them just like a fine dining restaraunt would!

I always find room for ice cream!

Happy belated to the DD!!!!!!

GREAT question KATIE.

mine is 26.2.  ive been able to bring myself to contemplate running a full marathon.

last year i ran a half.  and finished w a smile on my face.

and considered what it would be like to 'have to' go another 13.1 miles.

i thought, naw, i dont think i would ever want to do that.

i will do a 1/2 IM before i do a full marathon.  theres just something not 'appealing' about that distance...for me.  (same with a full IM)

and ive decided that im not gonna 'push past it'.

if somewhere internally (for whatever the reason) ive decided a full marathon is not for me, then i figure why 'fight it'.

perhaps there will come a time when that'll change, and im completely open to that.

but for now...im content w trng for halfsies and contemplating a 1/2 IM.

sounds like you have time to come help me with my guestroom!!!?? way to tackle it head on Stacie! my parents had a basement added to our home...was going to put the two boys down there and make it a game room....made it a game room with pool table/bar and even put bunkbeds down there...but they never made the move...I had to share a room with my IMPOSSIBLE older sister...I hated her back then! haha...but we are soooooooooo close now! funny how that happens! guess Im trying to say my sisterhood back in the day was not quite as tight as your brotherhood seems to be!!! lucky you!!! my poor mom was constantly settling spats between my sis and I!!

which bring up another question in mind.

is there a distance that we are 'naturally' drawn to or better at?

i have friend right now (a few friends actually) who is training for a full IM.  and she talks about how hard short distance races are ie Sprints...that she feels better suited to long distances, like 1/2 and full IMs.  thats when she really 'shines' as it 'plays' to her natural strengths/abilities.

i dunno.  another facet of the conversation...

but, i love this journey were on, dont you?
