Well... it looks like I have to follow in Jay's footsteps and buy some bike parts.

I had a little wipe out on the road today.  I had a truck in front of me that kept drifting into the bike lane.  So, when traffic started to slow, I got out of the saddle to get around.  Well, as I was passing and keeping an eye on him, I failed to see the pot hole in front of me.  I went down at about 25 MPH.  I ended up with road rash on my right side, but more frustrated about my bike and embarassed.  Ruined a new pair of shorts, tore my saddle, bend a brake level, and to add insult to injury, a flat tire.  Expensive trainig ride today!

Looks like I'll be getting those integrated aerobars sooner than I expected.

Now, the even bigger question, do I still brave the pool later?

Second on the count your blessings.  Going down at 25MPH and walking away with road rash and equipment damage sounds pretty good compared to what could have been.

Hope the trip to the pool was not too painful -- guessing you went!!!!

Yep, I would say I'm pretty fortunate.  I don't know what was worse, the fall or the lecture from my wife.  Apparently, during her previous shift, she took care of a guy that fell after being cut off by another cyclist.  He sustained a fractured pelvis!

I was going to swim.  Got to the pool and there were kids everywhere.  I just wasn't in the mood for that today, so I passed.

Hopefully, I won't be too sore in the morning.  I want to get my long run in and a light swim workout.  I've been totally slacking on my swimming drills lately.

YO.  So the toothfairy dropped off some rollers today.  I about killed myself trying to ride on them.  I'll have to make the wife video it some day, I'm pretty hilarious.  Laughing

awesome.  I've only been using mine a few months, but really like it.  I'm sure you've already seen the tips about starting out in a hallway, or a doorjam, right?  Biggest thing that helped me was to remind myself to look up, not right at the front wheel.  I also removed my pedals and used old platform pedals for the first week or so until I gained a little more conficence.

Roller tricks! I love the glass of wine and bloopers at the end...

I'm glad I have a trainer - I don't have to worry about falling off of it!

Oh, I WAS in the hallway!  My kid about pissed herself watching me try it out.  Yeah, I goggled a bunch of roller vids before I considered purchasing one.  I look almost as bad as some of those folks. Agreed, lookin up seemed to help keep pedaling.  I just threw some runnin shoes on and used those, no way was I dumb enough to attempt to clip in on my first time.  Now I need to find someone to sell my trainer to....

Just came in from a one hour ride on the rollers in the backyard while the kids were inside the house playing wii...  fun stuff.

Fathers day weekend, so I've got free reign to do long workouts both days!  Tomorrow early morning I'm doing my long run (~8 miles), and Sunday I'm going down to Tamarancho for a long mtb ride.  It's a Boy Scout camp nearby that has a bunch of nice single track, it's open to the public for $5/day.  Haven't been there in a LONG time.

(Insert thumbs up icon here!)  Very nice, sounds like it will be a good weekend for training!  I'm doin the flipside of the coin, long bike tomorrow then long run Sunday.  I just swapped my cassette onto the new wheels today, anxious to get on the bike tomorrow and beat them up some!  We just started a new running club on base here, so we're doin a big group run w/ 10 or 15 people Sunday.

To the other David, that will be 13 straight days of training meow!  I feel great, I don't know that I've ever had a string of training this long before w/o feeling like I NEED a rest day.  My new motto shall be 'I'm just here to train'.  Laughing

Ahhh... not too bad.  The road rash is more of an annoyance than anything else.  Otherwise just a little stiff and sore, but it didn't keep me from training.  I got a swim-run done this morning.

Nice....  Have fun out at Tamarancho!

I get to work Sat, Sun, and Mon.  But after that 72 hours, I'm off for nine days and heading to TAHOE!!!!

Well folks, I have been "half involved" lately...

Life has been busy.  Work has been hectic & a fairly rocky time will continue for the next 6 months to 3 years.  How long is unknown.

Just bought a new house & closing date is July 30.  We have been busy doing the deal & planning move.  Our present home will go on market next week & we are preparing for this.  This "staging thing" is a pain in the butt!!  Hopefully it will sell quickly.

Life is changing quickly &  trying do my usual routine is difficult.  I have been checking in daily & have had little to add.  You guys are progressing very fast & are not beginners.  This thread is packed with useful info, but is an atypical mentor group.  Kudos to all of you.

Thanks to Tim who has anchored this for the last few months...I have almost disappeared & am sorry for this, but life "got in the middle", of my training, & my online habitat.  I suspect my life will continue to be topsy turvy for the next couple months, until I sell my present home, move into my new & get adjusted to the new area.   We are in the country now & are moving into the city.  The house we are buying is 130 years old, but beautiful.  Things are going to be very different.

My training regimin has switched to a cycling focus.  I live on the North Atlantic & the season is short.  I run all year, but the 3-4 months of summer, I try & cycle, as much as possible, & just try & maintain my run fitness.  Come October & it will be too cold to cycle & I will build my run again.  Everyone must adjust their training schedules to their lives & life circumstances.

Anyway sorry for the babble, but thought I should say what I been up to.

Richard

Errrrr!  I thought I had a line on a screamin' deal for a new 2XU sleeveless wetsuit, but just got word the company was out of my size.  Oh well, the search continues.

Well, the relocation to the Chicago area is just about done.  We closed on the house yesterday and are all now in the area.  Unfortunately, our hotel lost power yesterday PM about 4:30 and has not had it back on since!!!

Did manage to get some training in the last three days.  Big story here is on the swim.  I'm now to the point where I'm relaxed in the water and able to swim semi-comfortably with breathing.  However, it's still not pretty.

When I do a 25m length, it takes me 32 strokes.  However, when I take strokes "4 at a time" and then stand to breath, I can make the same 25m length in 16 strokes.  Difference is that when I'm doing it "straight", I really struggle with breathing properly / lift the head out of the water.  I also don't seem to get any power/rotation with each stroke.  Did work on rotating body to breath versus lifting and it helped a bit, but still not where it should be.

On the run front, back to feeling OK at the 9min / mile pace and able to go for 30 minutes.  Likely will try and get back on the bike either this PM or tomorrow AM.

With being up here, goal will be to be in the pool every day in an attempt to improve.

Hope everyone has a happy Dad's day tomorrow.

Curt, I like your training ideology here!

It's hard to target and train to our weaknesses.  It is much easier to fall back on our strengths and spend more training time in that realm which we are comfortable.

Keep up the good work.

My buddy headed up to Tahoe today.  He just reported that the lake is freezing.  I might have to invest in a hoodie before the race on Saturday. Brrrrrrrr....  Oh well, the pain goes away after about twenty to thirty strokes and your face, hands, and feet go numb!

After the crash the other day, I started looking into new aerobars.  This inevitably led to me researching new SRAM 900TT brake levels, SRAM r2c shifters, which led to new SRAM brake calipers, and new SRAM Red rear and front derailleurs.  This could get expensive.

Jay, you had a head start, but I might catch you!

Plan today was to do a "gym triathlon", but the forgotten goggles put a kabosh on that.

Instead rode 12 miles and ran 3 miles -- both at new PR times for me (18.1 mph and 8:30 mile pace).  Better than the pace was the fact that both were comfortable.

Long way to go on the swim, but the bike / run are really encouraging.

Anyone read "The Time Crunched Cyclist" by Chris Carmichael"?  Picked it up a couple of days ago and found it quite interesting / a different take on building the aerobic base (high intensity training for 6-7 hours / week versus long, aerobic training)

Would love to hear the thoughts on the approach and/or extrapolating to swim or run....
