Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jason-I think I agree....I'd rather be hot than cold when out training. In the heat you can always stop or slow way down in response to the heat. When you get cold on the bike the only real solution is to get inside and warm up. Pretty good brick workout for me this evening. An hour on the bike with 30 minutes of intervals. Legs felt surprisingly good on my run. randy |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jimmy, I hope your brother gets well soon. I'm sorry to hear about the bleed, those are no joke. Best wishes from me! I was planning on doing a 40 minute bike around where I work followed by a 20 minute run, but it started raining pretty hard so I had to use the indoor equipment at the fitness center. I was tempted not to do anything at all since I was so bummed by the weather. Luckily I ate about a 1000 calorie lunch, so that gave me extra incentive to at least burn some calories. I still have a weight loss goal of 19 more pounds (should put me around 180lbs) by my October Olympic race and I didn't want to thwart that at all. So I'm glad I did it, but man I hate stationary bikes and treadmills!!! -Nate |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jason, that bike ride sounds miserable. Good mental practice for your worst case Ironman tool kit. I'll take our heat any day over that. I actually like hot weather. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Finally. The bike. Cleaning it up after today and getting it ready for next weekend. Ok. Fail. But at least now I have a picture. I will get it in here soon. ![]() Edited by wannabefaster 2012-08-09 9:43 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jason, I'm with you on the rain, but 60s sound really nice to me. Just checked out the 10 day forecast for Ann Arbor - after Saturday, upper 70s and low 80s and sunny. Now we're talking! I'm looking forward to some runs in the Arboretum next week! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry to hear about the miserable ride, Jason. Now, let's see that pic! I had a great day yesterday. Couldn't log in to report, though, as a thunderstorm took out internet here. I started feeling better (and I feel totally normal this morning). I visited a doctor. (New guy, for me. I lost confidence in my previous doctor, and whether that loss was justified or not, it meant that I had to move on.) He was highly recommended by my neighbor (very fast runner, also has diverticulosis, and is a PA) and although he isn't taking new patients, he took me after a good word from my neighbor. Apparently he keeps his practice very small so he can spend time with patients. I had never heard of such a thing! He is also a runner himself. Anyway, he was great. Bottom line: he thinks that the Brevard ER experience was much ado about very little. I was beginning to think the same, and having him confirm it was good to hear. He said that the renal failure was probably real, but there's no reason to think it will happen again. He gave me some really great advice about dealing with nutrition on long runs and bikes, and gave me the green light to try it out this weekend. So I will! I'm planning a ride on Sunday. Have a great day everyone. I'm on cloud 9. I'm watching kids and working all day. I'll probably swim (easy) with the kids later. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael-that is good news. Hopefully, you have turned the corner! Jamie/Nate-good luck this weekend! Anyone else racing? I'm headed to Tuscaloosa this afternoon to drop son off for college. Roll Tide! He checks into his dorm tomorrow morning and will have about 9-10 days of preseason XC training before classes start. He has had a detailed workout schedule to follow all Summer and is anxious to get together with the team. Not as emotional an ordeal for us with him going away since he has been a boarding student in HS since 9th grade. Still had our share of drama this week as he seemed more focused on spending time with his girlfriend than getting everything in order to leave. Hoping to get to Tuscaloosa for a couple of Fall meets and maybe a football game. Will check in as I can. Randy |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael-glad to hear you more optimistic about the new doctor, hopefully it works out better than with the last one. Randy-have fun seeing the kid off! I remember going off to school, those were the days... I got an hour swim in this morning, which felt really good. I am going to take it east today and tomorrow, in anticipation of the race Sunday, although I'm trying to decide whether or not to run tomorrow morning with my usual running group. It's awful tempting... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Swam this morning. For some reason I thought there was a 30 minute run on the schedule for later this afternoon. Glad I checked the schedule- 65 minute run. Guess its time to get started on my workout! ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Has anyone here ever gotten bursitis or a swollen elbow from riding their tri bike? My right elbow is tender, swollen, red and hot to the touch. It doesn't hurt when I swim or move it. If you push really hard into the joint it hurts and feels almost bruised. I don't remember falling on it. Or being bitten by anything. I do have a small cut on a finger on the same arm with swelling around that. The elbow has felt swollen for the last couple of days. Driving over to go on my run this evening, I noticed that it was red and hot to the touch. The red area is extends about 2.5-3 inches around the elbow. We self diagnosed either an infection or bursitis or infection of the bursa? via the internet..Yes, I know this is a bad idea. After digging around in our medicine cabinet we found Cipro and tetracycline. I really don't want to go to the ER tonight or this weekend unless red streaks start coming up my arm. The only thing that I can think of is it may be infected bursitis from riding in an aero position and putting pressure on the joint. Via- Internet medical diagnosis. Do you think it would hurt it to complete my 3 hour ride/30 min run tomorrow? I also have a 2 hour run/ 1 hour bike on the schedule for Sunday. Edited by Catwoman 2012-08-10 8:07 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene, Dr. Girlfriend says: If you don't wanna go to the ER, you should go to urgent care Saturday morning to get something called a "joint aspiration" to determine if it's infected. From what you have described, it could be a septic joint which needs antibiotics and if left untreated can damage the joint in the long term leading you to many more days of lost training than just two this weekend. For tonight you can ice it to calm it down and take 800mg of ibuprofen. Cipro is not a good idea and you should get it seen before a recommendation can be given on the tetra. Final recommendation: go see a doctor! This has been a dictation of Nate's Dr. Girlfriend. Hope you can get it figured out, Rene. Good luck, but it sounds like it may not be wise to do more training this weekend. I know it sucks, but better to get it fixed now in the short term than to hurt yourself for a longer duration. P.S. Dr. Girlfriend says she cant be the triathlon official Doc and that I should go back to watching tv now.:) -Nate Edited by leechj 2012-08-10 8:37 PM |

My left elbow, right at the point of the joint, was tender early this week. Kind of like the bone was "bruised" and tender to the touch. No swelling or red areas so not as severe as you describe. I'm certainly not a doctor, only a very mediocre lawyer, but I would think something like acetomenaphinl/ibuprofren (I get them confused) that is good as an anti-inflammatory might help. My elbow is fine now but I suspect it was related to a longer ride with more time in aero than I had been doing. As long as it just seems to be limited to your elbow I would give the training a go...if it starts to bother you then bag it. Hope it gets better. Randy |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Despite being oh too familiar with doctors' offices, I don't have a good answer for you, Rene, but it sounds like you've gotten good advice. The only thing I'd add is that you should probably just avoid riding in aero until you've got this sorted out. Good luck to racers! ETA: I guess that was obvious. My point was that the importance or riding in aero all the time is way overrated, IMO. Edited by Experior 2012-08-10 9:07 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene-I will defer to Nate's doctor girlfriend. (By the way Nate, nice catch) Now, if I were staying at a Holiday Inn Express it would be a different story. Unfortunately, I am at a Fairfield Inn and not qualified to give solid medical advice at this time. Randy |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ER Doctors diagnosis is Cellulitis. This was determined through a blood test. They sent me home with a script for Clindamycin and told me to follow up with my doctor on Monday. I'm not totally sure that I agree with their diagnosis. The swollen area is the same size but it is hotter and a darker red color. I'm assuming that exercising tomorrow would probably be a bad idea?? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene - bursitis can often look like a septic joint. Do you have fevers/chills? Kind of surprised if they decide it is infected and treat without then aspirating the joint. Are you penicillin allergic? Clindamycin is an interesting first line choice. I definitely agree with NSAIDS and would take them scheduled for the next few days. Hope you have a speedy recovery. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jimmy, No I'm not allergic to penicillin. It is still red and throbbing now. Woke up every 2 hours last night. I'll take the NSAIDS. Edited by Catwoman 2012-08-11 6:42 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene-hope you are feeling better? How's the elbow doing? Well, got son moved in. Really an easy process. Took about an hour to get him unpacked. Then a quick Target run and lunch. We were on the road headed home by 12:30pm. He is very excited about the Fall. Jamie/Nate-good luck tomorrow! Randy |
