Morning everyone - Like the Adirondack region of NY we are dry today as well so I rode my bike to work - yeah for carbon offset

Run tonight after work and then the rest of the week.  I love that I chose sessions and not mileage because I can just go run and not worry about how far I have to run to make my goal.

uza very smart boy, Bill! I too did sessions over distance...wasnt sure how far I would be running since Im not training anymore!

kromanowski - 2009-10-06 10:34 AM Question of the Day: Does anyone else have a mental block when it comes to going beyond a certain distance?  And if you did and have pushed past it how did you do it?

Mine is the 6 mile mark...I am fine running 5 miles, 6 miles I have done once or twice and am reasonably ok but I (mentally) freak out when I think about doing anything more...I have never gone further than six.

Most of my running currently is outside...the treadmill will only be for when I am working 12-15 hour days and don't want to run thru the ghetto at 9pm...

Maybe the next time I am not running my usual path I will do that...just run...when I run my usual routes I know the distances based on landmarks so I will have to get off the usual route to not know how far I have gone, but that is a great idea.

When I signed up for my first half, I'd never run more than 5 miles and that was only once.  I'd done my first 5k the year before so I was pretty uncertain about my ability - physically and mentally.  An IronMan friend told me the following:  if you can run 5, you can run 6; if you can run 6, you can run 7......and so on to 13.  She was right.  For a half you only need 5 mile runs during the week (following Hal Higdons novice plan) - doable on a treadmill if necessary.  Your long run can be scheduled on your day off from work.  Find a route you enjoy and just add a mile or additional minutes each week.  I have one in my neighborhood/town, but also occasionally treat myself to running long in Central Park in NYC followed by brunch with friends.  I find post long run brunch plans to be a great motivator.

GREAT question KATIE.

mine is 26.2.  ive been able to bring myself to contemplate running a full marathon.

last year i ran a half.  and finished w a smile on my face.

and considered what it would be like to 'have to' go another 13.1 miles.

i thought, naw, i dont think i would ever want to do that.

i will do a 1/2 IM before i do a full marathon.  theres just something not 'appealing' about that distance...for me.  (same with a full IM)

and ive decided that im not gonna 'push past it'.

if somewhere internally (for whatever the reason) ive decided a full marathon is not for me, then i figure why 'fight it'.

perhaps there will come a time when that'll change, and im completely open to that.

but for now...im content w trng for halfsies and contemplating a 1/2 IM.

stacieb

You would rock the Mary Stacie!!!!

My next goal is a 50 miler then a 100 miler off in the future.  I have to kill this TransIowa bug first though before I put up that type of running/walking mileage!

thanks BILL.

no doubt i could do it, the desire to do it is just not in me....

but interesting that you brought up the 50-100/ultras.

now THAT gets me going for some reason, contemplating a race like THAT one.

or those 24 hour, they dump in the middle of nowhere and you need to find your way back adventure races where its paddling and running/trekking and navigating and what not.

though.  w my Aquathon experience, im not sure i'd ever find my way home.  LOL.

but man would THAT be an adventure.

as for TransIowa.  you'll settle that 'score' nodoubtabout that!  for sure!

is there a distance that we are 'naturally' drawn to or better at?

i have friend right now (a few friends actually) who is training for a full IM.  and she talks about how hard short distance races are ie Sprints...that she feels better suited to long distances, like 1/2 and full IMs.  thats when she really 'shines' as it 'plays' to her natural strengths/abilities.

i dunno.  another facet of the conversation...

but, i love this journey were on, dont you?

I can see your friends point.  I would rather run a marathon than a 5k to be honest with you.  I figure I got the slow long genes instead of short fast ones.  When I did my first mary I could run 10 min miles all day long and not even hurt.  It was my comfort zone.  Should have just stuck with that

she talked about it in a similiar fashion.

her sister is an uber talented athlete, but a sprinter, short & fast is her 'speciality'...

but my friend, she speedy to begin w and she gets faster as she goes along.  the longer the better.

i can definately see ultras in her future.

we all have some type of mental block when running...I too would find it hard to get past 8...I found that if I didnt run a certain route and instead just went out blindly I would do better...and I would force myself to go out 5 miles and that way I had to run home the 5 miles or walk...most often I would chose to run then walk.

or make a music mix with your favorite boogie woogie songs set to play around when you start to fade...so say 6 songs in...put some of your fav pick me up music and hoping it will do to you what it does for me....ENERGIZE YOU! I cant remember if you are one that listens to music when you run!??

do you have a running club that you can join up on the weekends? I know you work a lot but maybe you can cut out for a run here and there???

I don't know about having a mental block, but before I started getting back into shape this summer I had only run over 3 miles a few times in my life. This was mainly due to the fact I had always been more of a football/baseball/basketball type athlete and endurance sports were new to me. Luckily, a friend of mine talked me into running with her at work (one of the perks of being in the military - getting to run while on the clock) and she started talking me into distances of 4, 5, 6 miles.

I still haven't gone over 6.5, but I am now able to do those runs solo and I plan on continuing to add mileage as I train for my first HM this winter. Here's to running through walls!

that is quite the improvement there!!! from 3- 6.5 in only months!!! just think what next summer will bring!!! kiu!

serendipity - 2009-10-06 3:31 AM Good morning!  It let the dogs out this morning and it wasn't raining! Cool

Lots to get done this morning, but I've got it all planned out to get my run in while the laundry is drying.  For my warm-up I'll be pushing the vacuum around.  Teaching yoga this afternoon and evening, with a trip to the doctor with my daughter in between because she's got an earache that won't go away.

I guess I'd better get moving!  (In case I don't get back to the computer until late, I'm making chickpea curry in the crockpot for dinner.)

who let the dogs out???

WHO

WHO WHO WHO-WHO?

sorry but I couldnt resist!

I thought the same thing earlier this morning but never typed it - darn my lack of creative first postings

I hope everyone got a good nights sleep! AND has great runs today!

I have 3 miles planned for later today and the weather should be perfect here for it.

LET'S GO GHOULIES!!!

spooktacular! way to get that run in! and I want to know what is perfect weather to you??? me its mid to upper 70's...with sunny skies!

It is supposed to be low 70's and sunny today. For me that is not too hot, and not too cold, it's juuuuuuusst right!

No bragging.  I won't see 70's again until next May or when I travel for work to my warm locals during the winter months.  It was 45 this morning for my ride to work.  Pretty bad when I was excited because that is going to be warm in 3 months!

ok got ya beat...my dh rides EVERY day to work...come rain, sleet, cold...today he took off and it was 39 degrees! brrrrrrrrrr and he wonders why I dont get up and ride with him! does my nice warm bed, crackling fire going in the fireplace and my nice hot cup of java maybe have lots to do with it!???

YUP INDEED! now I will go and meet him after work for rides! by then Im warm!

Sounds like my sentiments exactly! my brother is an IM...my daughter and niece will be racing in an IM in November...and I have no inkling to do one! very motivational for me to go bike and run...but not those absurdly long distances! not even in perfect conditions and flat course! hey, I too am considering a HIM! is there one half way in between us! what a hoot it would be to race with you! the mileage would zoom by! haha

my daughter said the same thing to me the other day...but she did say she was going to train hard for the sprint tri we do near her home every year...she ends up getting 10th and said she is working on a medal this year! I think it is how you train to run...if you just go out and slowly run the long distance it is hard to get out and run a fast tempo run...or it is for me! when I was training for my hm...I would go out and try and run fast short distance and I just couldnt seem to find any speed...maybe its all mental...or maybe Im mental! more likely the second of the two! haha
