Great story, Jennifer.  Kids are amazing.  Your no-quit attitude has obviously rubbed off on them.  Congrats!

bfoyle - 2010-12-06 10:16 AM pictures of the new bike are mandatory, I believe!

Yes, pictures are required Aaron.  I've given up on a tri bike for at least another year so I love to live vicariously through others.

Jennifer, that's a great story.  It's awesome to see that kind of dedication.  You've probably changed the entire path they will walk from here on out.

We've got the last race (for our group) this weekend...Jeremy is doing a reverse tri (can't imagine swimming and then going out on the bike while soaking wet in this weather!)...best of luck! Finish strong.

Just thought I'd share my hip findings with some other tri geeks who get it.

I just got back from the appt. with the sports hip specialist.  I'm so much more relieved now.  He really listened to the whole story and really dug in.  After reviewing the MRI and xrays, he's 95% sure what I have is a slight anterior labrum impingement and not a sports hernia or other tear.  He said for someone my age I have a very healthy hip joint in terms of spacing/cartilage, etc.  He went over all the treatment options including arthroscopic surgery, but didn't suggest we venture there yet.  In fact, if surgery becomes an option, it's specialized enough that he wants me to see someone else who does nothing but that type of surgery.

Essentially, he gave me a really strong anti-inflammatory to take for two months.  He offered a cortisone shot as a possibility but for a number of reasons we decided on the drugs instead.  If the pain subsides with this drug, it pretty much confirms a hip joint issue and rules out all possibility of sports hernia and other such issues.  At that point, it will be up to me to manage the pain/discomfort, hopefully only using drugs during heavy training cycles for just a few months at a time.  If the pain doesn't go away with this drug, it's back to the drawing board, but hopefully this will be it.

Great story Jennifer, that is great your daughter never gave up!

My goal for December is to swim 12800 yds and walk 30 minutes per day?.  My stretch goals are 15000 yds swimming and being able to run a 5-10k by end of December.

?
?
??The swim is my focus so I can break through 230,000 yards in 2010.
?
?This is a fun game, I like it! ;-)

Happy belated Thanksgiving.

I have been caught up lately, I get online for just a few minutes each day. I did get a new bike, but otherwise nothing exciting.

Congrats on the new bike!!  I also got one, you can see it here:

Fast forward two weeks to Saturday - we had another swim meet...Katherine (my oldest) was again schedule to swim in the 100y IM. She took off the blocks (her goggles slipped around during her dive and filled with water) and proceeded to successfully swim all four strokes legally and finish her race. Woot!

Then...when she dove in at the start of her next event (50y free), her goggles slipped down to her chin. Instead of stopping and putting them on in the right place, she swam as fast as she could and won her heat!

I was (and still am) so proud of her! Must be all that HTFU that is floating around the household.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving...I realized today if I can run another 96 miles in the rest of the month - I can break 1000 miles for the year...let's hope my health will allow me to. Anyone got any good goals for the final month of the year?

Congratulations Katherine!!  What an awesome day that must have been!
Good luck with the 96 miles!  Get it done!!  :-)
My only goal for Dec. is to get some quality family time in and enjoy the holidays!! Laughing

Rene, now THAT'S a bike!  And there are now no excuses!  That CDA bike looks pretty challenging, so hopefully you can find some nice climbs to train on.

Your turn Aaron.

everyone - thanks for the well wishes this weekend! I feel pretty good going in to the race. I know I should have swam more - a lot more- than I did. but those are things I'll live with.

i'll have a race report up after.

hi everyone. the last race of the year is done. I had a great time. Did pretty well overall - all three legs were pretty good. A bit fast to start on the run and I slowed towards the end, but still ran well. Bike did good, just not as fast as I thought I would have been. Was hoping for over 19mph avg - finished just under according to my comp. And swim was very pleased with - finished under 9'. cant ask for better considering I slacked the swim training this round.  overall I was 31 out of 114, 5 of 16 in my age group. I think that's the best age group finish I've had!

anyways - thanks for the support the last few days. still a great group after our first year!

Nice race Jeremy, great placings.  What was it like to swim last?  I can't imagine doing a reverse tri.

Thanks Warren!

as for swimming last - it's all I know. So I cant compare it to swimming first. But, it's challenging for me because I push myself on the run and especially the bike because that's where I can do well. So, I don't use much of a kick because the legs are tired by that point.

The spring race I do will be the first race I do that is swim first. I talked to the race director yesterday and he said it will be a seeded swim start. so, I'll have to do some different training to prepare for running off of the bike. I'm sure my swim will be a little better being fresh but the run will be challenging I'm sure.

Rene - congrats on the new bike, looks speedy, will certainly help in IM CDA!!

Jeremy - Great job!  I agree with Warren on swimming last, I'll have to see if there are any reversetri's in the area as I think it would be neat to try.

Can you all believe Christmas is next week?!  Hope you are enjoying the holidays, it's been pretty cold here for Virginia, even have snow on the ground for second day, which is very unusual.  Hope it's not as bad as last year, with several big snow dumps.

Cheers!

Wow, all you guys are getting snow and we've had none yet here in New Hampshire, outside a few flurries!  We've been cold - a few days in the single digits when I wake up and highs in around 20 - but otherwise pretty manageable weather.

Almost ready for Christmas here, hope everyone has lots of blessings even amidst some trying times.

I just started using my bike trainer, so I have a very basic question.  How do you know where to set your tension so that it mimics a basic flat course?  Do you just have to go by feel and practice or is there a standard way of setting the tension?

Thanks!

I'm sure everyone is getting Santa stocked up with goodies for the little ones and everyone.  Happy Holidays!

How I have mine set up is at a fairly high tension - then I use the gears to change my effort level...it took some time and a lot of experimentation to find the right level, lots of getting on the bike, riding a few minutes, getting off and adjusting, getting back on the bike, etc...but now I have it right where it works for me and I know exactly what my cadence and gearing should be to reach a particular HR. On the positive side, I think I need to up the tension before embarking on the second year of Jorge's Winter Cycling plan on notch - but the idea of it scares me.

I've only got 40 more miles to run in the next two weeks...I'm thinking I might make the 1000 mile run mark after all. It made me think about what I want my goals for 2011 to be (I never put any down in writing for 2010...and I think that was a mistake as I am a very goal-oriented person). I'm thinking of 1200 miles running (2010 will be 1000 miles), 3500 miles biking (2010 will be around 2500 miles) and swimming three times a week (this will be hard in the winter for me, but easy once everything thaws out a bit). Oh - and that HIM thing in September.

I've got to get out the door to do my long run...the 18 degree temp is putting a bit of a damper on my enthusiasm...but the hyperactive dog that bolts for the door everytime I stand up is helping. I hope you all are having some wonderful time together with friends and family to wrap up the year. It's been a great one for me and my family.

Tension on the trainer is a tough one.  This year, I tried marking the knobs so I could return them to the exact same setting each time.  Even after inflating the tires to the same pressure and getting the adjustment knobs at the same place, I still have to jump off and adjust the tension occasionally.  If anyone else has a great idea on this, I'd also love to hear it.

Jennifer, 1000 miles is a great milestone.  I thought I'd hit that one, but after my half I fell off the running bandwagon.

Ok folks, I'm ready to see the IMCDA surge.

Have a great Christmas everyone.
