brick94513 - 2010-06-19 7:55 PM After the crash the other day, I started looking into new aerobars.  This inevitably led to me researching new SRAM 900TT brake levels, SRAM r2c shifters, which led to new SRAM brake calipers, and new SRAM Red rear and front derailleurs.  This could get expensive.

Jay, you had a head start, but I might catch you!

Awesome!  What happened to Brian?  He IS the one w/ a $12k bike on order remember! Laughing

Happy Father's Day dads!

hahahahahaha. I'm here, and you're exagerating Jay! Lol. Hopefully that thing will be here this week!!

Nice job Tim!!! Spend the dough!! Lol

Anyone read "The Time Crunched Cyclist" by Chris Carmichael"?  Picked it up a couple of days ago and found it quite interesting / a different take on building the aerobic base (high intensity training for 6-7 hours / week versus long, aerobic training)

Would love to hear the thoughts on the approach and/or extrapolating to swim or run.

  • hey Curt

nice job on the pr's. I got up early yesterday and drove down to the Lakefront. I went with some friends. We swam from ohio street beach to oak street beach and back. It was 1.5 miles. It was great to get out and practice ows. Everytime seems to get better. After that I headed home and got a 50 mile bike ride in before 2pm. We had a wedding to get to. If you want to practice ows you should think about that. It was a good time!

Since there's a few mountain bikers here, I thought you may get a kick out of this sign.  I dunno about where you all live, but around here bikes are illegal on almost all the good single track in the county.  Except here, where you are not allowed on the fireroads!

I have not read the book, so it would be hard for me to comment.

My two cents in general though: everybody's body is different.  The key is to learn how to stress your own body to get the most productive adaptative response.  As an example, I know people that have had success with the 3x week marathon training plan that would absolutely not work for me.  I need to gradually built base and periodize or I become injury prone.

However, I believe this concept will not translate to swimming well at all. High quality swim sessions are more about form than anaerobic training.  This requires time in the pool!  Usually a swim program will progress from drill emphasis to aerobic distance to anaerobic intervals a couple weeks out from the event.  At the onset, you are better suited to do short sessions to avoid fatigue which induces bad form.

Nice!!! I prefer to stay on the single track. However, given the frequency I like to crash, I couldn't make any promises! LOL

Tim/Richard, I'm still contemplating doing an HIM this year also. In your opinion, is 13 weeks enough time for me to get ready? I'm interested in your opinions since I tend to be unrealistic with my goals. I'd be looking to have a "respetable" finish and have fun.

If you just want to do the distance without time restraints, then yes it is possible.

I assume, like Jay, your area of weakness will be swimming.  Do you think you would be able to complete the 2,112 yard swim?  Also, can you safely build base in the next three months to accomplish the bike and run?   Do you feel comfortable currently riding 50-60 miles on the road?  Have you ran a half marathon?

If possible, I would suggest trying a couple olympic distance races before then to get a feel for the distances.  The swim is only another 500 yards for the HIM.

I swam 1.5 miles in 50 minutes this weekend in the Open Water. I did stop a few times, but not too bad. I now feel pretty confident I can swim the distance. I still think it's better to do an Olympic first before making a decision. After my swim I went for a 52 mile bike ride. I need to plan the logistics more for this when I do it again. The lake is 45 minutes from my house. I didn't bring water for the drive back and was probably dehydrated before the ride. I went through 70oz of water by the 40 mile mark. I felt like crap. After 40 miles my avg speed dropped from near 20mph to just below 17 by the end of the ride. To be fair, we had a big storm the night before so the bike trail was more of a cyclocross course with downed trees and the wind was still looming (remind me again why I live near the windy city?) . I was by myself so no one to help pull in the headwinds. Even still, this didn't feel like my best day. Given that performance, I feel doing an Olympic first will give me a better handle on how to put everything together, fuel properly, and get through. I'm trying to work out doing Evergreen Tri July 17. Hopefully, my wife can work out things at work so we can make the trip down there.

Like I said in the original post, I have no doubt that you can complete a HIM based on your training.  It will just come down to how fast and/or competitive you want to be and how safely you can complete the distance.  I can't see you taking longer than an hour to complete the swim even with breaks.  I'll go even further and gamble that you would finish near, but under 6 hours!

Nevertheless, doing an olympic distance first would be the conservative route to take and probably the smartest.

I think it's best to take the conservative approach. I've got a couple friends that are going to do Racine in a few weeks. They've only done the Xterra prior. Both of them have a huge cycling base though and have picked up swimming waaaaaaay faster than I did. I'm just happy I'm getting more comfortable with Open Water Swimming. I just wish I could get my times under 2min/100 in the OW. But looking back I didn't exactly swim at race pace either. I shouldn't be in such a hurry anyway. I'm sure it'll come if I keep at it. Thank you guys for all your help and advice. I really appreciate it!

Hi everyone - happy belated Father's Day to all you dads. I had a fun weekend in Palm Springs. I went with my gf's family for a wedding and it was HOT! I managed two dreadmill runs - 11 miles Saturday and 4.5 miles Sunday. I usually don't sweat that much but it seemed like a puddle of sweat at my feet on Saturday.

I'm now 4 weeks out from my HIM...I thought I couldn't get more excited but it just keeps building more and more! I'm going to make the drive this Saturday to preview the course. Hopefully that helps calm me down a bit. It should help to recognize my surroundings and know what's coming down the road.

I'm swimming the swim, biking the bike, driving the run. It sounds like my 3 buddies I'm competing against are going to join me so I won't be gaining any advantage over them...but it will be nice to ride in a group.

Bummer you're not around to join the fun - do you know of any good places to do lunch near Windsor?

Yep, they are 17 miles apart. We will be in two cars so we'll either leave one car at T2 or just add an extra 17 miles to our ride. =)

I'm kind of stuck in a funk this week.  I have a race on Saturday and I just don't really feel all that prepared.  Its wierd, my workouts have felt fine, but I still have this wierd apprehension in the back of my head.  I can't really put a finger on it other than I'm still pretty sore from my fall last week.

I was suppose to do a group ride tonight, but everyone bailed out.  So, I spend the time replacing cables, housings, ferrules, and brake pads.  A little more tinkering and at least the bike should be ready for the weekend.

Did you learn how to do all that just by trial and error or did you pick up any good reads along the way?  I know next to nothing about my bike and I'd like to eventually get to a point where I could build one up myself.

I think having a basic mechanical understanding of your bike is essential.  Not only does it save you money and the hassle of running to the bike shop, but if I have a mechanical problem way out on the trails, I'm sure I can rig something together to get me home.

I'm pretty much self taught and learned by trial-and-error.  There were times I had to suck up my pride and take the bike to the LBS for some help.  But, in retrospect, it was all part of the learning process.  They were pretty cool about it too.  I found that they are more than happy to talk you through it as they fix your mistakes.

There are a couple good books out there based on your learning process.  If you are analytical like me, I would recommend the Park Tool's Big Blue Book of Bike Repair.  If you are more conceptual, I have heard the Zinn and The Art of Bike Maintenance is a good manual.

However, I do know my limitations.  I don't even attempt to true wheels!  I don't have the patience or the ability.  From what I've learned, the process is more artistic than mechanical.

Oh, I almost forgot, check your LBS too.  They will often hold bike repair classes geared toward the basics, such as cleaning and regular servicing.

If you are consider a new wetsuit, read on.  This is fresh off the presses.

USA Triathlon Adopts New Wetsuit Regulation

    USA Triathlon June 21, 2010

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following extensive research and consideration, USA Triathlon announced today that beginning in 2013 use of wetsuits exceeding five millimeters in thickness will not be permitted at USAT-sanctioned events.

The new regulation, which falls under Article 4.4 Wetsuits of the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules, states: “Effective January 1, 2013, any swimmer wearing a wetsuit with a thickness measured in any part greater than five millimeters shall be disqualified.”

“Our board has been considering this issue and the impact it might have with our athletes for some time,” said USA Triathlon CEO Skip Gilbert. “The overall feeling is that it makes perfect sense to align with the guidelines set by our international federation and multisport enthusiasts around the world. This is a standard that is good for the athlete community and our sport overall.”

By implementing this rule change, USA Triathlon falls in line with the international standard of five millimeters recognized by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and other National Governing Bodies.

The adoption of this rule is designed to eliminate any competitive advantage gained by enhancements in wetsuit technology in recent years. Studies have shown there is a marked and measurable performance benefit to the use of certain wetsuits, specifically added buoyancy effectively reducing passive drag. These performance benefits have led to an increased, and artificially induced, reduction in physical demand required during the swim leg of a triathlon and an increase in speed.

USAT recognizes that there may be wetsuits currently available on the market that are greater than five millimeters in thickness. Consequently, the organization has implemented a phase-in period of the rule to allow the use of wetsuits that currently do not meet the thickness requirement. This announcement of the new regulation serves as notice that the rule change will come into effect in 2013.

USAT recently solicited feedback on the wetsuit thickness issue from its certified race directors via a comprehensive survey. The majority of those surveyed supported USA Triathlon’s adoption of this rule.

Bummer you're not around to join the fun - do you know of any good places to do lunch near Windsor?

I don't really know where the course is up there, or how close this is to where you will be, but the best place I know of is the Rio Nido Roadhouse.  I've been there a few times, always good food and often good bands.  http://blog.rionidoroadhouse.com/

Hey guys - Happy Belated Father's Day to all you dads. Been busy with a few things and haven't had time to catch up on all your posts.

Tim - Did you crash your bike? Are you ok?

Brian and Tim - You're both buying $12K+ bikes?! Niiiiicce Laughing

Everyone else - Who raced last weekend? How did you feel about it?

I went ahead and upgraded my road bike. Bought a Look 105 566 (it was only $2.5K). I love it - I feel like I am putting half the effort into my biking and this is doing everything for my attitude. I was starting to dread getting on the bike and that is not a good way to feel when you're training for triathlon. I have not put my clipless pedals on it yet....thought I'd get a good feel for the bike before I crash it.

I've decided I'm going to do an Oly in September. Yes, my run still sucks but I've not had pain in my post tibial tendon for the past week or so, and I'm cautiously optimistic that the orthodics are starting to work and this will be the norm from now on, and I'll be able to work on it a lot more.  I have been kind of aimless since I finished all the sprints I had scheduled for the spring, so I thought that a September race would be nice and keep me motivated and training consistently. However, it will be in Austin, TX, so it may still be hot. I looked at the website and it looks like it's going to be a super fun race. Live music on the bike and run....as well as at the finish line. Beer, beer and more beer. And of course - getting to hang out in Austin for a few days is always a good thing. Love that city.

Trina. That is a rreeeeal nice bike!!!

Jay. +1 to what Tim says about having a basic understanding about the bike. I've also found trial and error to be the best method. There is also a wealth of knowledge on you tube about bike repair.

Tim. HTFU!! We've seen your race results and you rock!! How many times do you fall on the mtb and get back up? This should be easy, and you got to buy a bunch of new toys!!!
