Kate-I hear ya on the cost!  I spent about $3,000 to do IMLP in 2010 and my credit card still cries from all the swiping it went through.  If you ever want to get the distance done, though, a non-Ironman brand is have the cost.  I *think* Vineman (not Wildflower, right??) is an iron-distance event... on our side of the country is Beach to Battleships in one of the Carolinas.  I remember paying roughly $300 to do Syracuse 70.3, but a waaaay better event (in my humble opinion) is Musselman.  Same distance, but more personable, more swag, better course, etc and I paid not much over $100 =-something for it. =)

Yup--Vineman is Iron, Wild flower I think is half iron as well as a sprint--both are in Cali... I have a friend who did WildFlower--she said it was awesome and she keeps pushing me to try it...I'm thinking maybe in a couple years (after I am through with school and can take a decent amount of time off...) I'll attempt it. I'm not terribly worried--I'm only 35---that's prime age group for awhile yet! This is all fun n' games for me---I plan on doing it for a l-o-o-o-o-o-ong time!

Hope you all have a great weekend!  The weather here is supposed be BEAUTIFUL! I hope so, we're going camping.  It'll drop into the upper 30s, lower 40s at night, but Sunday should nearly hit 80. Woohoo!!!!!  Plus, we're bringing our dog with us for his first trip to the country, so this will surely be interesting.

I've been doing a lot of "training" on the ergometer, so my arms are getting a workout.  Been doing a little walking on the treadmill, too.  I don't mind that the intensity is toned down while I figure out how long it'll take for me to get back to running, I just don't want my body to get comfy not moving around!

Pulled the trigger on a Garmin 610 this afternoon and logged my first run.  Nice new toy to play with!

AWESOME!!! Keep everything!  Like, the packaging, receipts, etc.  Garmin is supposedly great at replacing things, but you have to have original everything for them to replace stuff.  Is this a waterproof one??

Kate,

Vineman does both a full and a 1/2. I did the 1/2IM in mid July and the full is at the end of July. I think I'm going to do the Vineman 1/2IM again next year. Want to do it too?????? It's a beautiful course. The swim is totally in calm waters. The bike has some rollers and one biggish hill but with absolutely beautiful Sonoma scenery and the run has a bunch of small rollers but has a bunch of aid stations. It would be fun!

I raced Muddy Buddy yesterday with my friend. It was fun and hard! Our friends came in 1st (we were in the same age group-96+, they combine our ages so we say it's 96 until you're dead ) and we came in 3rd. The 2nd place team cheated so they added penalty time and gave us 2nd! I'll take it.

Spent the long weekend (including a day off on Friday) at a kids soccer tournament in Maine. Glorious weather. Did nothing active other than driving to/from soccer fields, checking into hotels, eating, drinking, and on the whole having a great time.

Did go back in the pool today for the first time in almost a month. Wow, what a struggle. Its like I never knew how to swim. Lets just say fitness on that front is now where it once was a few weeks back. Still, glad I did it, and know I need to ramp this up .

Sadly, my plans for the half marathon on off. I've had to travel for work the past couple weeks, and training has fallen off a cliff. I won't be anywere near ready to run by Oct 30, so I'm not going to bother. There's always the spring!!

Johanne, that sounds like fun! I have to admit though, the prospect of doing a 1/2IM scares the crap out of me! But....I don't have nay races on my tentative schedule for June, July, or August...If I really train hard (and the right way), I might just be able to do that.....I'll have to think about this! Congrats on the 2nd place at Muddy Buddy!

I am SO looking forward to doing the Down n Dirty mud run on the 30th---I keep reading about everyone's adventures at their mud/obstacle races, and I get more inspired!

I found a couple of Duathlons to do in early 2012---One being a traditional run-road bike-run, another being a "Dirty Du"--run-mntn bike-run, and then a "double du"--run-rd bike-run-mtn bike--I want to do all 3, and they are in Jan, Feb, and March, so its not too much. My only question: (its kinda stupid...) If I do the Double du, should I bring both the Mountain and Road bike, or just the mountain bike?--The mtn. bike course is fairly technical, and I don't think a hybrid can handle it(and I don't have one...).

Kate, I just told my husband about the dirty du and he wished we had that out here!!!  I'd try to find a forum to ask about the bike question.  My thought is if you want to win or place high, you have to have the proper equipment.  If you're out there to finish and have fun then go with what is easiest for you.

Kate,

Going from the oly to the HIM was a big jump for me this year. It's doable but I had to stay pretty consistent in my training. Think about it and watch for when Vineman opens registration. It usually fills within the week. It would be fun!

Since most of my races are for fun and beating only myself, I would use a mountain bike for both legs of the race. Especially if the distances are shorter. If it was a long race, I would bring both bikes. Actually if it was easy to bring both bikes, why not do that? I did my first oly on my hybrid

I haven't even done an olympic yet! I think that I will plan on completing an olympic this year (technically 2012, but whatever...) and then maybe plan for Vineman in 2013? I need to imporve on all sorts of stuff, so no matter what I do, the training will bring improvement!

As it is, tonight I will hit the road running, and I plan on swimming this weekend...my bike's got a flat right now---and I've been super lazy about fixing it...I really should before the weather gets to nasty to ride in!

Having short-term goals definitely helps to hit a long-term goal.  So, planning on an oly next year and maybe a HIM the following year can be super motivating!

That sounds like a really good plan. My first year, I did my first sprint in March and finished with an oly in September so I had a long season to work up to the oly. My goal for the oly was just to finish, enjoy the course and see/feel what it was like to race that distance. This year I did the same thing with the HIM. The first was to finish and next weeks will be to improve. For me there is so much to learn that there is no real rush. The only pressure I feel is age! Haha! I'm much older then you so who knows how long my body will hold up

Have a great weekend!

PS Fix that tire! We're not going to have this beautiful California weather for much longer!

Hey everyone! Hope you're having a GREAT weekend!

I got in a 5 mile run today! YAY!!!!!!  I ran with a guy training for Ironman Arizona.  His pace was perfect for me and I didn't have any pain in the spots where I've got the sports hernias.  Woohoo!

Visited a fellow BTer and member of our local tri club in the hospital.  She has pancreatic cancer.  What a trooper!!  She was still walking 5ks up until about 2 months ago (diagnosed this past winter).

Now I'm off to work in the pharmacy.  I've been wearing a pedometer to count my steps as part of an "experiment" at my full time job.  We're wearing them for a week because we're going to ask people from our senior centers to wear them for a year and work on increasing their steps to 10,000/day.  Working in the hospital helps me get those steps which is great because we've got a little competition going on at work, too.  Laughing

Hello all. Sorry it's been so long since I've checked in. I got a bit of a knock out by a cold again.

I should be going back to the start of the agressive c25k program this week with 3-4 30 min walks this week though and may add in some biking and swimming if I get time or can work it in to my schedule - I've just got a new job. So I'll keep you updated. Also bff is trying to get me to join the gym again so that may help too.

Go Suzie! Hope the new job works out well for you! --If its doable, I would say JOIN THE GYM!!!--I have found that I tend to do more workouts being part of a gym--otherwise I feel guilty for wasting money on it without using it! Not to mention, there might be some cool classes or something that you never tried before that ends up being the most fun ever...

Tonight I did a 2.25 mile run at the park near my zoo--I averaged about 10 min. pace--I still can't get over it, I feel like I am going really slow, yet I double checked my timer tonight and it was dead-on--I have increased my speed! Yay me! I swam last night as well--1st time in about a month...it felt pretty good though, and smooooooth...so I'm happy with that.

I fixed my tire last night, so I plan on riding my bike to and from school tomorrow--back to my 12 mile (one way) bike rides--24 miles/day...not bad! I just need to get below 45 minutes each way, then I'm golden.

My first Mud-Run/Obstacle race is less than two weeks away!!!! SO EXCITED!!! Laughing

C25K? New gym? New job? Lots of good happening! Keep it going!

I've been enjoying sleeping late in the AM and avoiding much anything which would cause me to sweat. Need to get moving again, but having trouble getting my butt out of bed. Just need to get my feet on the floor, but that seems to be the longest training distance I need to overcome!

Kate - I see your point. Every time I've been part of one though I seem to end up paying money and never going. I'm hoping this time to go with BFF though so that should help.

Johanna - Actuallly it's the old program - I still haven't started it yet though. I need to sort out a way for my work shoes (cheap sneakers) to not hurt my feet - I'm thinking inner soles or something - because I end up with really sore heels by the end of the day due to standing around watching/assisting children (I'm doing childcare for under 5's) and seem to put most of my weight on my heels for some reason.

Mike - Good luck with the getting out of bed stuff. One of the forumites on RW just started a new routine where she gets up and puts on her running clothes to have breakfast - she basically tells herself that she's just having breakfast "no biggie" - and then ends up running anyway - not sure whether it's the "well I'm wearing my running gear I might as well use it" or what but it seems to help - it's worked 2 days in a row. Maybe you could try that.

No races.  I'm in NYC right now and there's a 10k tomorrow, but it costs $60!!  I do need to do a race at some point, I miss being a part of something with other athletes. =)
