mambos - 2012-06-15 2:55 PM Well I was able to get my long ride in today, 61 miles! Avg pace was around 17.5 but there was difinetly some rough spots. During 1st 30 miles my only issues was trying to get comfortae on the seat! After raising the seat, it seems there are some pressure points I am not fond of! I think the seat height will work, I only had minor discomfort in my back. The bigger issue is the soreness that showed up in my neck, the last 15 miles were rough to say the least. I had a hard time staying on the aerobars because of it. My opinion is that it is due to the angle and having to lift my head so far to be able to see where I am going! With that in mind should I raise the handle bars to take some of the angle out? I know some of it may just needing to get used to the position, but I think with my history that may not be an option! About 5 years back I was layed up with massive headaches, after brain scans and other tests it was determined to be that my neck was out of place! Took 18 months of PT to get rid of the headaches, so I would prefer not to do anything to reinsure this area! Anyone have thoughts on the position? The last photos I posted are the current position!U

61 miles is a long ways for a new set-up!  When I'm getting used to a new position on my bike, I like to take several shorter rides.  Yikes on the past headaches!  Don't aggravate that again!

Jeff, Matt and Brenda, good luck racing this weekend.  Brenda and Matt enjoy each other's company for the short time you get to see each other.  And a word of warning Matt, Brenda is pretty fast and sneaky.  She'll sneak up on you during the race and blow your doors off as she passes you.  Proceed with caution!!!

Go get 'em, Brenda!!!!

Good luck to all of you!

Ironman Lake Tahoe!  How awesome is that?  I might have to volunteer my time because I might be crazy enough to attempt it!

Stan?  Thoughts?

Wow!  I just saw the e-mail.  It's funny because just a few days ago Stan had mentioned it and there's the official announcement!  So it's in September... out of curiosity, what's the weather like then?!  Also, the e-mail mentioned first full IM in California since 2001... what was the other one?  Vineman came to mind, but then that's not IM-brand... did it used to be?  Also, registration begins on Monday?!  That seems crazy!  That just announce it, and BAM, it's decision time!  Or I guess since area triathletes were in the know about this coming to town, it's not so sudden...??

Obviously not time to read through everyone's posts over the week, but I wanted to wish everyone luck who is racing tomorrow.  I'll be racing a sprint...not looking to do very well as my quad is still sore from God only knows what.  I'll be around this Sunday, so look for one of my extra long posts catching up from the week.

Thanks everyone for the messages of concern...I really am just that busy.  I haven't updated my training log since Costa Rica and will do that on Sunday as well.  It's dismal at best and I have a 150 mile ride for Multiple Sclerosis next weekend.  I'm sure that'll be a fun time considering my longest ride in the last three months is under 50 miles I think.

Matt I agree with Tracy about that being a long test ride. I get sore neck muscles the first few times I get out on my tri bike in the spring and those are short rides. Be careful with that! Where was the soreness in your neck?

I agree with Tracy and Dina.  Riding that far in that position for the first time would be fairly taxing.  Maybe next ride spend some time on the horns to break up some of the positional stress and go for a shorter distance.

Also, when you're riding aero you aren't supposed to try to see nearly as much of the road as you do when you were using Wally.  Obviously Wally was providing a vary and basically unrestricted field of view that riding an aerodynamic position will not allow.  Rather than trying to look all the way down the road try looking only a few hundred feet ahead and do so by looking out of the top of your eye sockets, so to speak.  You need only to raise your head enough to see what's coming up and be able to make maneuvers for passing and safety.  Hopefully, if I'm not being really clear, Jeff can provide some insight on my point here.

Now,  for a point that I doubt many will disagree with is the comfort versus speed concept.  many have siad that you need to find the "perfect" position for aerodynamics to allow you to really get into the speed of a race and potentially win your AG or even a race overall.  Others would say that you need to be comfortable more than you need the true aero position.  Then I would say what many others would say too, you have to be comfortable if your going to be on the bike for hours during a race and/or training.  Here is an article that explains my point and hopefully will allow you to adapt what is best or you and your racing and training elements.

Blah!  Caught the cold.  It's not terrible but it's bad enough to prevent me from doing my long bike ride today.  I might try to head to the pool for an easy swim / hot tub / sauna session.

Can't wait to hear about the races!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Tracy sorry to hear that you caught the cold hope you are feeling better and soon.

Got back to training after 3 days off. I switched the long bike ride with the long run today. It wound up being an awesome run after not being able to doing any training the last 3 days it was great to get back at it today. It's a beautiful day out not too hot and a nice breeze perfect for running. I was able to get 12 miles in today. It was suppose to be just an easy paced run and I wound up running harder than I thought I would. It was great just to be out there. I will do the bike ride early tomorrow as I would like to get in 50 miles. We'll see how that goes.

Dirk thanks for posting the article. I found it very interesting and I think there are some good points in there that I can definitely take away from that and put into practice when riding.

Happy Father's day to all of our awesome junkie Dad's!We were at Magic Kingdom from 8:30 in the morning until 11:30 last night. I think my husband might like to just stay at the rental for Father's Day and hang around the pool but my kids want to go to SeaWorld. I'm going to need a vacation just to recover from this vacation. On the training side of things, I have managed some kind of swim, bike, or run every day so far and have not cut in to any family time. No long, epic workouts but enough to stay ready for the sprint coming up in July. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

It was no Dirk Pauley massive construction project, but I did manage to assemble Ryan's new grill all by myself after the guy at the hardware store said I wouldn't be able to do it

Today may be Father's Day but it wouldn't be so without the mothers too.  I got to have a wonderful dinner with both of my girls on Friday night because we thought both of them had to work all day.  Now one  has to work until 5 PM and the other one is off all day. Hmm? Oh well.  Maybe I should make them buy me some ice cream or something.

Dina, the last time I was at Disney I experienced the same type of "I need a vacation from my vacation" as you are currently experiencing.  Our girls were just younguns' then and they were as tired as we were.  But we planned to spend 2-3 days at the beach following the Disney trip and that worked out very well.

Allison,  I'm sure Ryan is quite pleased with the gift you have assembled for him.  I think it's awesome that you did that for him.

If many of you who don't have a facebook page haven't heard about the Junkies that have raced this weekend...........................................Well you'll just have to wait to hear from them.  All I will say is that this group has an awful lot of "fasties" within the ranks.  I'm sure it has everything to do with the mentors and none of the hard work that you all are putting into your training. Actually I know how hard you guys work but I will say no more about the races and let the fasties give their own report.

I will say that I have a race next weekend and I can't wait to get there.  I am stoked and ready!!!  Besides, it'll be a little bit of a Junkie/BT re-union with a lot of us form this group and a couple from another group being over there.  It'll be a great race and great time to see everyone again.

BTW Brenda, do you know any good campgrounds close by?  Lis and I are looking to camp over there next weekend and need some input on something good.

Just got back a little while ago from my long bike ride. It was great I did my first 50 mile ride, 52 miles in just under 3 hours. I am very happy with those results considering I have only been riding for the last 4 months. This was the first ride where I had enough confidence to go aero nearly the entire ride as well. That was big for me as I have been some what hesitant but it went very well today. The other thing was no issue with either hand today. I did go get the brace for my right hand (thanks Jeff) and wore it but I probably did not even need it since I was mainly on the aero bars for most of the ride. My ride is pretty flat as well with the usual wind down near the water but I was able to hit 25 miles an hour in one strech repeatedly so that was pretty cool as well. After this ride I am feeling like I can do this stuff and that I am actually improving. I will admit though my legs were on fire when I finished but no worse for wear.

Not much time to post and final results are not posted yet but I still wanted to pass on some information from my race today.  1st this is the 2nd year for doing this tri, and last year was my 1st tri ever.  With this in mind I put a lot of emphasis on how much time I could cut off.  My finish time was 1:24:32, 23 minutes faster than last year.  I also improved my overall finishing position by 118 spots!  Last year I finished 181, this year 63 overall.

I think I may have made some improvements!  I will post a race report as soon as the final numbers are posted (I still have no clue on swim or Transition times)
