![]() DIRK, Dirk, Dirk....shakin' my head..... I absolutely loved reading every word of your novel post. HOWEVER....I can't look at another picture of your bloody self for it makes me queasy. Lisa gets the sainthood award for putting up with you. You really are the king of asphalt junkies since you now have some embedded in your body. May your time at the beach be healing and relaxing. WILL - your August numbers are great! I don't remember reading if you're following a certain IM workout plan. If so, which one (just curious)? I think VERO is the only one racing today. Keep breathing during the swim and good luck on the rest of the course!
The hubs and I are heading to Michigan for a one night get-away. After spending the day on my feet in the kitchen yesterday doing different things with my abundance of garden veggies, I'm looking forward to a little R&R. Have a blessed Sunday everyone! |

Vero, if your racing today...kick butt! I put a new set of Conti GP4000s tires on and new latex tubes on yesterday. Wow. I did a 70k ride and averaged 35km/h and I wasn't really pushing that hard. I'm not sure if it was the tires/tubes or not but they sure felt faster, and smoother. Really enjoyed the ride. Can't wait to race next weekend. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk, As you were describing what happened I was thinking about how we are told to "live in the moment" you even said it yourself about having learned not to panic, the details you remembered are amazing to me i am thinking about life in general how I breeze thru the day not even remembering so many good things because I am busy in the midst of my crisis yet in the midst of a crash you can remember how many posts were on a fence and the fresh cut grass. I am happy you are ok and thanks for your post! Have a great rest of your vacation. Derek, nice ride! Brenda have a wonderful time! Vero good luck today! As for me I have to get a little personal, about 2 months ago, I had mentioned I had a pinching when I was riding and thought it may be my bike shorts.....well it has gotten worse it is a lump in the groin area, where my inner thigh meets the seat, and i don't know if it's my seat, my shorts, my bike fit, it's to the point where it is painful to ride so iam not even looking forward to a ride .....any suggestions where to start fixing this issue? ![]() ![]() |

Derek I use the Conti's as well they are good racing tires. The latex tubes are supposed to be a little faster from what I hear so the combo of the tires and tubes may have given you a little gain in speed. The latex tubes are more prone to flatting from what I hear as well but the trade off is the smoother faster ride. |

Yep! Almost! At least for me. But apparently it wasn't for a lack of trying. Dirk you and Jeff were suppose to kill the ride, Jeff wasn't suppose to try and kill you! LOL. I'm really glad you are alright and speaking from experience it really does suck when you crash on the bike. You were very, very fortunate and thankfully the good Lord was watching over you because that could have been sooooo much worse then what it was. I was agree with you on the way it happens, time seems to slow down and the thoughts you wind up having are unbelievable. It was the same when I wiped at the sprint tri. I remember everything, it's like you said things just seemed to be vividly clear as if time just stops in that instance. The funny thing for me was I wasn't worried about myself. I'm glad Jeff was there with you to help you out and that your wife made you go to the hospital and that she was watching out for you and taking care of you afterwards. Thanks for taking the time out to post all the details of your ride with Jeff and I don't think anybody here is going to disagree with the lessons learned and we can all benefit from what you experienced. I hope this in no way deters you from hitting those hills when you can and taking the those decents safely of course. That's the fun and exilarating part of cycling. I hope you and you family enjoy your vacation, rest and heal up before you get back to doing any training. |

I plan to only use them for races so I'm not too worried. I've heard stories about how hard they are to install, how ever I took my time and they went on great. Hopefully they will help me out next week.Originally posted by BigDaddyD79 Derek I use the Conti's as well they are good racing tires. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() August totals listed below and just think if I didn't have two weeks of tapering in there I would have done more LOL. I did kill on the bike though and Ironman is all about the bike. Swim: 9h 15m 28s - 22363 M Bike: 40h 28m 28s - 706.86 Mi Run: 20h 48m 29s - 110.96 Mi That's it, the last big workouts are done. I went for a swim this morning and it was awesome. I swam with a bunch of my friends who gave me a hero's send off for Wisconsin LOL. I could not be more thankful and grateful to everyone there today for all the help and support I've gotten from everyone. I had my fastest swim I think I ever had going across the lake on the long out and back. I finally swam under 40:00 minutes so I hoping that is a good omen for Wisconsin. I also made up for my missed ride yesterday and got a 90 minute ride in with my friend Bobby. We kept the pace pretty moderate and pushed here and there but overall a good last ride before next week's race. I can't believe it, one week to go! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm home from the race now. I really did this race just to say I've done it, so I wasn't expecting great things. What really happed was I got my butt kicked. 10th out of 13 in my age group. Though the top 5 in my age group were around top 30 overall out of 300. There are some fast 40-44 year olds out there. I came out of the craziest swim I've ever been in among the top half, then hammered on the bike until my calves started to threaten cramping. They held off full on cramping until the long uphill during the first mile of the run. Then, the left one especially, they went into full pain mode. The rest of mile one was ugly: walk/stretch/jog/walk/stretch/jog. After that it was a slow uphill second mile+. Once turned around and coming downhill I was able to stretch the legs out better and run. My transitions went pretty quick, but I did forget to put my sunglasses back on when starting the run.
I made several mistakes leading up to not having a great day. 1. I did not train enough for hills on the bike or the run for this race. 2. I needed to hydrate better the day before 3. I needed to get more than 4.5 hours of sleep last night

Vero congrats on finishing it sounds like it was a tough day for you with some really tough competition. Regardless even with the cramping issues, the lack of sleep and not training enough for this type of course you still finished the race. It's tough going through these types of races but you always take alot of things away from the tough races like this. It'll just make you better for the next one. Looking forward to the RR. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vero, soundly like you had a tough day but still managed to fight through and finish strong! Relentless Forward Progress!Dirk, that is one crazy description of the wreck, normally when time slows down bad things are about to happen. I'm glad to see you made it through with only flesh missing an no broken bones or worse, although those pictures were a little rough to see when first turning on my phone. On that note, I believe you said you will be purchasing a new helmet, that's a good idea and to help you out I would link to offer to sell you a like new helmet, only worn once. The color is perfect for you, lavender with some flowers on it. It doesn't fit my style but maybe it would work better for you ![]() ![]() |

I'm doing the BT Beginner Plan... the one with HR (except I'm not doing the strength training). I had to sign up for silver membership to get it, but it's nice being able to pull the plan into your calendar and adjust it... I pretty much move all the WO's around each week to fit my schedule. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk- Glad to know that you survived and hope those bloody wounds heal quickly. If Jeff ever invites me along for a ride I will be sure to pass. Vero - Congrats on finishing. Sounds like you had a very tough group. Tony- You will definitely be on my mind this week and I will be sure to track you next weekend. Our local Tri Cub just cheered on a first time Ironman at Louisville last weekend. He completed his first, the fine young age of 56. Brenda - Hope the night away and R&R was relaxing. Matt - Awesome swim. Sounds terrible that your wife made you go to Vegas, how awful (typed with sarcasm). Dina- Awesome job on the Aqua/Bike- Race! JoAnne- I hate to say this, but I think you may have a boil. I've gotten them from cycling. I put hot compresses on them afterward and then apply pressure (kinda like kneading dough) to ensure that they go away on their own. Derek- Nice ride. I'm looking forward to seeing how your race goes next weekend. As for me, I'm just starting to get my routine back. New job + kidsw/tummy bug, then kids w/ head cold... meant mommy had a tummy bug, then a cold, and then a 3 yr old's birthday party to plan for yesterday.... talk about busy. I got out this morning for a little bike + run action and rolled my right ankle 1 mile into my run. I was startled by an unsecured dog and stepped hard right on to a pine cone. Almost fell down I rolled my ankle so bad. I hobbled home quite angry. Then, I reminded myself of Dirk's beautiful battle wounds. Hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day, even if you are not observing the holiday up there north of the border.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can anyone tell me why I turn into a snotty mess after swimming? I am about to start wearing a nose plug before I blow my brains through my nose by sneezing so much! Completely disgusting on a side note I have my wife taking about a vacation to Mont tremblant, of course she doesn't realize what is there! Maybe 2015? Edited by mambos 2013-09-01 8:11 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jenn you have been quite busy, glad to see you checking in and I'll need all the help I can get next weekend so I appreciate the support. I'll be thinking about everyone here while I'm out there. Hope the ankle is not serious and that you're feeling better. Matt I have the same problem it doesn't matter if it's the pool or the lake I always have a runny nose or some congestion after I swim and it seems to go into the following day as well. I wish my wife would force me to go to Vegas some time lol and I hear Mont Tremblant is a wonderful vacation spot especially near the end of August. I'll scout it out for you when I'm there. I think registration is still open for next year you know. I have quite a contigent coming up from NY if you are interested in joining us ![]() |
