Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice bike! I'm so jealous Might have to get my old ten speed out and take it to the LBS. That's probably what I'll use for my sprint in July, it's either that or a mountain bike.

![]() | ![]() I'm BACK!!!!!!! Sorry I havent posted in a while. I have been very busy between work training and life! Did a 55 mile bike in the cold this weekend. My running is coming and I am feeling more confident about ny HIM. Pete, How was Cuba??? No pics????? Gary, Love thr bike porn. Very nice . My bike is that color. VERY VERY FAST!!!!!!! Have you named her yet...most important!!!! We have many new finish lines congrats to all!!! I am very excited that we have NO snow on the ground. Still a bit sandy and you have to take it slow riding but at least its NOT the drainer!!!! I know you will all do well in your races. The training is really the hard part. As Bryan says ...the hay is in the barn. If i could only remember that on race day!!!! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Mav! Welcome back! WTG on your bike ride... glad you're feeling more confident about your HIM... I'm having the exact opposite problem... the more I train, the more unprepared I feel... The most training I've done is 2 hours on the bike...(27 miles) and I'm one of the faster riders on the team??? My goal for the Oly is under 4 hours... I don't feel like I'm in 4 hour endurance shape... I'm wondering if I should step down to the Sprint. It's 1 month from tomorrow YIKES!!! I know this week & next week are our hardest training weeks... I'm feeling it! I look forward to the taper The good news is I swam 1700 yards this morning, so I feel MUCH more confident about the swim... now to do it in the FREEZING cold lake EEEEK |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Mav! Still working out names. Tried the Black Knight, Dark Knight or just Knight but that sounds like a guy (okay not PC, sorry) but it is a her for sure. So not sure, open to suggestions! My new Tri shorts are black and the Tri top is white with black. I just need to replace my silver helmet and I am set. I wish I could do a long ride but hard riding at night in the dark in my neighborhood (pitch black in areas, lots of critters running around, etc). Looks like Saturday I am going to meet the BR Tri group for a OWS, can't wait. Does mean no long ride on Saturday (hour drive there/back, 2 hrs there, back to kiddo's). Kids have a mounted Pony club meeting on Sunday so I may haul kids/horses and bike. Ride while they have their meeting. Diane, nice swim. Good luck on whichever you go for. Sounds to me like you can do the Oly. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Diane, what are the distances for your race? Four hours. Are you sure? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WhenAllElseFails - 2009-03-17 1:40 PM Diane, what are the distances for your race? Four hours. Are you sure? swim = 1500 meters (approx 45 min) HOPEFULLY, it's an outside estimate - my average is 3min/100 meters bike = 40k (25 miles) (approx 1:50) based on it took 1:50 to do 25 miles on 95% of the race course last week run = 10k (1:20 - 1:30 depending on how I feel) based on 1:13:05 PR for that distance plus transitions and I'm up to 4 hours plus... My goal is under 4 hours... but when I break it down, it doesn't look doable...ugh Now you know why I'm FREAKING!!! LOL |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I see how you got to the numbers. I'm out of my league here. Having only done a mini. If it's any consolation, I think running four hours is a lot harder on the body than the tri. Your marathon took 6, so if you can do that, you should be able to do this. Pace yourself, have fun with it and I believe you'll be fine. You certainly have trained hard. You've done all these distances and then some. Train hard, taper well and race easy and I think you'll be fine. When I do a half it takes almost 3 hours. But if I thought about that at the start, well I'd never start. One mile at a time and by noon it's done. Same with you. Knowing you, if you do the sprint after all the training, I worry you may be upset with yourself. You've earned your place at the starting line. Whatever you do, I want you to enjoy it and look back on it with pride. You deserve that. I'll be on my honeymoon the day of your race. But I'll set an alarm on my cell phone to think of you and wish you well on race day. What time is the start? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is it wetsuit legal and if so are you going to wear one? I am assuming you are based upon the pic you showed. My understanding is that wetsuits improve swim performance. If it doesnt speed you up it will make it easier, saving more energy for the other parts. Anyone who has used a wetsuit can help out here? Add that and the fact you still have a few weeks to work on bike speedwork and you could be set. For example, based upon your numbers you are avg about 14.2 mph over that distance. Avg 15.2 and you knock off almost 7 mins from the ride. Up that to 16.2 and you will save ~13 minutes. |

![]() | ![]() Dianne...my advice is DO THE OLY!!!!! You have done the training, thats the hard part. I can also tell you from experience that we all doubt our ability to take it to the next level. You would have to search here...but you can read my posts about how nervous I was about doing my first oly. I did fine. I knew exactly how long it would take, and I did it. I doubted it right up until the end. I couldnt believe it when I crossed the finish line!!!! Who cares how fast you are. Face it...NONE OF US ARE GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!!!! The best we can do is complete our goals. You have trained, you will taper , and you will be ready. Try to enjoy the moment. Smile and know that you have accomplished wonderful things. Now in June, when I am doubting I can do my first HIM...can you re-direct me to this post. I am already feely nauseous Have fun Dianne. WETSUITS ARE YOUR FRIEND!!! WHENEVER POSSIBLE WEAR THEM!!! They make you faster, more boyant and warm. And contrary to what Bryan says ...you can pee in them as well! The only time I did not wear my wetsuit in a race is when it is not wetsuit legal ( that has only happen 1 time). I am probably buying a new bike. I am spoiled as I have 2 bikes already. But i NEED a tri bike. I rode a Kuota K factor today and it was sweet. I need to "sleep" on it...but will probably buy it. I will have trouble sticking to the plan for my HIM with a new bike 'cause with the warmer weather all I want to do is ride. I have not been in the pool in a few days!!! will post pics Maybe???? |

OMG I lost my post... I'll try this again OUCH - that sounds painful! Actually, I thought about taking my tri bike to bed when I first got it... Thanks for the words of encouragement to EVERYONE! I know it's just nerves, and that I can accomplish what I set out to do... after all, I did do a Marathon! I think the nerves just make the accomplishment seem bigger and therefore more sweet when we do it... Mav - you're gonna ROCK that HIM!!! Edited by Cardholic 2009-03-18 5:33 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mav - you NEED a tri bike ?????? Sheeeesh, you are such a tri-geek now !!!!! No joy in Mudsville today - the mighty VReds were defeated in the deciding game of the conference championship series last night Yesterday was a rest day. Today I'm planning a 5k run at lunch. Temps here are tending to be above freezing during the day so it's quite pleasant to be out but hard on the shoes due to the huge puddles from the melting snow. I agree with the others that say a wetsuit should be worn whenever legal. It gives you such buoyancy and in my case a lot more confidence for the OWS. Have a good day y'all. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally got a name for my bike - I wanted to name her "Pinky" due to her pink fork, but then I got a dog named "Pinky" sooooo after a bit of research, her name is "Jaipur" Jaipur: A Pink Jewel In The Desert I think with her rich history, she should be a great bike for me... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thumbs up on the bike name!! Make sure you get a nice sticker ("Sticka" as Mav would say) for her. I got mine from: FBP |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OMG Mav- that is a FIERCE looking bike. I am VERY jealous! Oops. Sebastian, I still love you very much. How was everyone's weekend? OD'd on basketball? It seemed to be on every second TV channel. Also on TV was the NCAA Div 1 Hockey East tournament. Watched some of the game between Boston Colege and Boston University then today I saw the end of the championship game between BU and UMassLowell. It was very exciting. Got in a nice 45 minute ride on the trainer yesterday. Last nite my wife and I were at a black-tie fundraising dinner for the Canadian Cancer Society. It was lovely and always fun to get dressed up. Sadly, much of today has been a write off though - I'm too old I guess to stay up until 1 a.m.!! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all, managed to keep with my SRD today. So tempted to ride but my cold is putting up a great battle so better to relax. Garys question: Spent my money on my bike but would love shoe w/clipless. So here is the question. Pretty easy to pick up a pair used cycling shoe for a cheap price. Not so easy to pick up a pair of Tri shoes cheap. Does it make that much difference? I don't see any podiums in my future so would the benefit of clipless outweigh the extra transition time? Mav - still loving the bike. Diane - okay looks like I have to get some clip on also! I like yours! |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() IMHO, clipless shoes/pedals need not be tri-specific. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() Good morning turtles! Gary, I dont think it really matters what you have for shoes. I initially had clipless mountain bike shoes because I was afraid of running (in transitions) with tri shoes. They are slippery. I did get tri shoes, but only because I recieved a gift certificate. My son bought me LOOK carbon pedals for Christmas. I would NEVER have spent that kind of $ on pedals, But I will say that I LOVE THEM!!!! I would strongly reccomend clipless pedals. They make a huge difference. As long as the shoe fits...wear it!!!!! Pete..the Red Sox opening day is only 2 weeks away...guess who has tickets????? I actually have tickets for the first nite game "opening nite"! Gald you are enjoying the MASS teams. I will be at the start line of the Marathon! My new bike arrives today! I decided not to pick it up this weekend as I need to spend time getting the fit set . It is VERY cold today...but I will ride |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Mav and Pete. I think I will get some used, cheap shoes and good pedals. Anything at this point to make my April 18th Tri easier. As for bike name. I decided on Lady Knight. Lady for short. Knight when I want an aggressive name. Going to try out some aero bar clip ons. Later! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I need HELP/Advice... What's Next? That's what I'm struggling with... I know it's a bit premature, but... I'm trying to work out my race schedule and thus my training schedule for AFTER my first Olympic Tri on April 18 (26 days and counting) If I have no plans, I'll be sitting on my butt... that's not OK, here are my choices: May 9 - Triathlons in Las Vegas & St. George, Utah (2 hour drive) The tri in Vegas is Ladies only, and I understand the bike is HARD! St George is the first of a trifecta series... Then, question is do I do the Sprint or Oly??? June 13 - 2nd of the trifecta in St. George - All 3 races are on the same course June 27 - Seattle RnR Half Marathon -I signed up for it first day at a HUGE discount... Can I really accomplish a Half Marathon, when my long runs are at 7 miles right now, and I'm running at the most 13 miles/week? Do I not do the tri's and just concentrate on running? I'm thinking that I'm gonna have to miss this... I just don't feel ready to run 13.1 miles .... Sept 12 - Lake Las Vegas Tri... similar course to the May 9 LV tri... Sept 26 - 3rd of the trifecta series in St. George Sept 27 - Las Vegas tri - very similar course to the April tri (My first Oly)... Oct 17 - Last tri of the season in Vegas - I heard it can get quite cold... or it could still be warm??? December 6 - Las Vegas Half Marathon (hopefully, my running WILL be better by then!) So, do I do the St. George trifecta? Do I do the Vegas ones? Do I concentrate on Sprints, Oly's, or just running? What would you do? What do you recommend that I do? |
![]() ![]() |
Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Diane - For me: May 9 do the Ladies only. Skip June 13, do the RnR( you can get your miles up, you have done a marathon and your biking miles will help you). From there it's pick and chose. As for Oly vs Sprint. Up to you Oly training will help for the RNR Okay, today I officially call myself a Swimmer!! The weekend OWS was great but my swim demons keep reminding me that was with a wetsuit (adds speed and distance). So today get to swim practice and the bulkhead has moved. The lanes are now 50 meters. I get it start to reach for fins and say "forget that noise just f'ing just swim idiot". (sorry for the language). So I swim. 50 meters non-stop. I loved it. Took a quick break and back. Did 200 meters that way. My 50's are less than 1 minute. So for my Tri this weekend I am going to state my pool time will be 5:30 minutes (2 min/100meters plus 30 second breaks) than plan on beating that time by reducing breaks. Thanks all for your support!!!!! |
