I've been trying to figure out my game plan for my race this weekend.  I would really like to break three hours, but I don't know if thats reasonable.   There is a long run from the lake to T1 which is going to consume a lot of time and the run course is an absolute b*tch.  The initial hill is a monster.  And if the grade wasn't enough, there are down trees across the trail that you have to hurdle on the way up.  I might have enough cushion on the run to get close to three hours if I have a flawless swim and bike.  With that said, I going to shoot to break three hours, but will be happy with anything under 3:15.

Swim  +  T1:  25 - 30 minutes
Bike + T2:  1:45 - 1:50
Run: 45 - 55 minutes

2:55 - 3:15

Last time putting the goals in writting worked for me.  So, let's see if I can make this a trend

My recommendation, cut back the volume, especially the run and avoid speedwork for the time being.  While cycling, make sure you turn smooth circles, keeping the gears light, and no mashing.  Working on swimming is a good alternative, but I wouldn't do any kick drills or flip turns at the wall.

As for PT, foam roller (black), stretching, yoga, and lateral stability exercises.

Congrats on the new bike!

got it...thanks. I may also get a deep tissue massage and see if that helps relieve some of the pressure. This is getting really frustrating though. It seems everytime I build my miles near the 10 mile mark on long runs something happens!! Where do recommend getting that foam roller at? I haven't seen many in stores. I did see something similar here: http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=trigger-point-tech... I get 15% off for my Lifetime Fitness membership and this product looked interesting.

http://www.amazon.com/Foam-Roller-Firm-Black-Made/dp/B002LTQG6K

The black roller  is the firmest and will allow for the deepest tissue message.

I haven't used the trigger point products per se.  However, I have followed some of their exercises for myofascial release and deep tissue message.  Their proprietary products just seemed a little pricy for me.

If you don't quit whining and break 3 hours like you know you can, I'm going to slap you when we finally meet.

I <3 my foam roller.  And the stick!  Keeps me movin on days when I feel a lil sore.  Thx for the link, I need to buy some new foam.  Mine is getting some flat spots and it's like rolling myself over speedbumps Laughing

Thanks Tim/Jay,

I ordered me up a Trigger Point one. It's a little pricey, but I'm hoping it holds up better and I get some benefit from the grids. Plus, I like to spend money! LOL

I never got along with the foam roller. I borrowed one and stopped using it. I'm not very flexible on the ground and I'm long (6'4") so rolling around on the ground isn't graceful for me. The stick has been my best friend, along with certain stretches that my PT showed me after my PFPS came about.

Tim - I know you'll kick tail this weekend. I had the same slow/sluggish funk the day before my half mary last year (SJ RnR). I ran for about 5 miles and felt like a freaking log. It was as if my legs were covered in cement. The next day I ran a PR of 1:41 when my goal was 1:52. I know you'll find your legs on race day. I have no clue how it happens but I'm convinced if you nail your nutrition, animal instinct takes over and you find speed you didn't know was there.

Tonight I'm doing a brick to make up for my missed workout last night. I get every other Friday off (tomorrow is one of them) but there's stuff to do at work and I get OT so I'll probably do a workout in the AM then work half a day. Saturday is my Vineman course preview! I'm bringing the camera. Long run Sunday, then taper starts!

My buddies and I are already starting to talk about IM Canada next year. I know it's ambitious but I really want to be an IRONMAN!

We got up to Tahoe early this afternoon.  God, how I love this little slice of heaven!  It is absolutely beautiful here.  The condo we rented is lakefront too.  I'll post some pics later.

We had some extra time before we could check-in, so I dragged my wife out to the XTERRA course.  I like to have her ride with me when I preview a course; it keeps me from riding too hard.  I couldn't believe it, but some spots on the course still had snow on the ground.  Otherwise, conditions looked good.

Tomorrow I'm planning on a little swim in the tempid Embarassed water then going to hike the run course with my wife.  The remainder of the day will be rest and relaxation!

Might I suggest fried zucchini at Sunnyside, or a Wet Woody at Garwoods. I can't wait to see your pictures and see your RR. I bet that lake is COOOOOLD.

Richard - what do you know about Penticton, BC? =)

Don't know a lot.  Other side of the country.  have been in the Okanagan Valley & it is beautiful.  The Ironman has been going for several years.  It is often sold out & pre-registration definitely required, probably a year ahead.  It is early September -ish & still warm, but past the summer heat.

That's about all I knowUndecided

We were in Tahoe a couple of summer ago -- beautiful place!  Tear up the race -- and not yourself! -- this weekend.

Made some good progress on training yesterday.  Worked on firing the hips and keeping the head down on the swim and noticed the difference.  Still a long way to go, but definitely on the right path.  On the run, held an 8:30 pace for a full 30 minutes with what I would call moderately hard effort (i.e. still had a lot in the tank).  Again, long way to go to the 7 minute goal that I've penciled down for end of next year, but it's a big step from the 10 minute pace that I started with.

Will have to look in to the rollers / sticks.  Anything that helps flexibilty would be a good idea for me!

Here's a link to a list of some of the things you can do w/ it. I started doing most of these a year ago on a pretty regular basis.

We went to Caliente's last night which has the same owners as Garwoods.  Unfortunately, no alcohol until after the race.  Since alcohol prolongs acclimation to altitude, I figure I can be good for a few days and skip the drinks.  It has hard through when the waiter kept going on about there special margaritas!

My gf's family was at Caliente last night for a fundraiser!

Dollar point is a sweet area. I'm pretty jealous I'm not there. Can't wait for 4th of July - laying on the beach watching fireworks reflect off the lake is so hard to beat. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the motivation guys.  I'm up and getting ready to head over to set up transition.  Then the long, dreaded wait until race time starts.

Usualy in these races, the swim is two 750 m laps with a beach run in between.  However, even with the lake level up, the water is still shallow and the shore is really rocky.  So, it looks like a deep water start with one 1.5k swim, then a long arduous exit over the rocks.

Good luck today David!

Hey everyone, have fun this weekend!!  I'm off to Yosemite for a week of camping, I should be able to get in a lot of running and biking, and maybe even a little swimming in the river.  I'll be offline for a week, but look forward to catching up and reading race reports from the weekend!

See ya!
