OK don't laugh too much. I am switching over from clips to clipless pedals. I took the bike out in my driveway today. I crashed-naturally. How loose can I make these things while I am getting used to them? I am trying to change 50 years of biking habits here. 40 of those were using toe clips on my pedals so it is not inate to me to twist my foot to get off. I am really bummed because I want to go ride today but am too worried about falling because I can't get out of the dang thing-this is the women who stood within 4 foot of a bear on Wednesday and looked it in the eye as she took a picture of it.

I think you actually want them tighter so that the slightest turn of your foot will release them.

What type of pedals are you using?

Look Keo easy-I started with them fairly tight on the trainer and was having problems then. Of course no danger of falling on the trainer

OK I am laughing that you crashed in your new pedals . . . but have no fear, we all do it and sometimes even once a year.  I did it last year as I was trying to stop for a very large pick up coming my way.  It was at a standstill but still embarassing. Thank god no one was there cuz thats the first thing you do is get up and look to see who's around.

You will get used to them.  It just takes a little time.  Most will clip out before they get to a stop and just let that leg hang there while stopping so as to not worry about it at the last minute.

11 mile run tomorrow, about 40 or so degrees, probably just a tad too cold to go without a jacket.  Maybe I will pull out the zip off sleeves jacket.

Yeah the crash was pretty funny-kind of a Ruth Buzzy fall of the trike kinda thing. I was dressed in layers of clothes to try and pad things, but landed hard on my knee. Scaped the pedal up (Ha to you evil thing) I know it will come- I just want to ride today without thinking about getting outof my pedals and thats just not happening. I will go back out and practice a bit-I'm sure the neighbors are enjoying the show

Ok its coming-I actually went for a ride around the block (sounds so cautious) and felt much better. Having a little trouble getting in sometimes too, but its all about practice, practice, practice. If the weather holds, I will try for longer ride tomorrow after my final day of coaching and then shooting the St Pats parade. Only one fall and a bruised knee so I guess it is all good.

40F is glorious.  What I would wear is a long sleeve compression top with a crew neck and a thicker top over that with a zipper neck, gloves, ball cap and maybe shorts or maybe tights.  That's assuming its not damp or windy.  Another thing to think about for an 11 miler is how the weather and temperature will change from the beginning of the run until the end.

Whoooo hooo.  Home from work.  My phone hates this place.  Wish there was a mobile version.

So congrats to those with new babies in their lives.  I'm just getting to the point everyone here sleeps through night so no new kids here.  Oh and Cindy doesn't want to be pregnant when we're in Italy this October.

Congrats on the bike team broseph.

Swam this morning with a bunch of fish at the pool.  Felt really slow.  I NEED to log a ton more pool time.

Wetsuit came today.  Sorry guys no booty shots.  Cindy says I don't have one anyway.

I had a pretty off week of training.  Overwhelemed with work, and a full winter of sitting in the same spot on the trainer and treadmill all winter has done it's job of getting to me. It looks like this week is supposed to be warm (40's anyway) but with the time change it's going to be dark at 6:45 am still.  Ughhhhh

Need to find my motivation again.

"warm" this morning.  Shaun is putting the quarq on my cd.01, so I'll be doing at least some of my 4:20 ride outside this morning.  Then a 6-ish mile run this afternoon.

Go to a parking lot, quiet street or other paved and traffic free area and just practice starting clipping in, slowing down, clipping out and stopping.  Over and over and over and over and over again.  Once you get the hang of it, try stopping from different speeds at a particular point (that's actually important - in real life the particular point is usually right before cross traffic.)  It takes practive to ingrain it.

When I panic on the bike, I tend to pull my foot up instead of twisting, like I'm trying to pull my foot out of my shoe.

Thanks for the advice. That is why I am riding around my block-very quiet streets but a few hills and stop signs. I do the same thing when I am feeling a bit  of panic and try to pull instead of twist. But it is coming and I will get it. I had a few minutes of wanting to put my other pedals back on yesterday, but got back on and rode and practised. Did a mile of very short off and on the bike. Getting used to the slippery feeling of the shoes on the ground is a trip too. I have been riding in my running shoes and they grip when you set your foot down.

I'm thinking about getting mountain bike shoes so I can walk around, but I don't know if they will work with my pedals.  I've also seen sandals (like Teva's not flip-flops) - but a floppy shoe seems to defeat the purpose of clipless pedals.
