Artist - 2011-03-12 10:39 AM Thanks for the advice. That is why I am riding around my block-very quiet streets but a few hills and stop signs. I do the same thing when I am feeling a bit  of panic and try to pull instead of twist. But it is coming and I will get it. I had a few minutes of wanting to put my other pedals back on yesterday, but got back on and rode and practised. Did a mile of very short off and on the bike. Getting used to the slippery feeling of the shoes on the ground is a trip too. I have been riding in my running shoes and they grip when you set your foot down.

I'm thinking about getting mountain bike shoes so I can walk around, but I don't know if they will work with my pedals.  I've also seen sandals (like Teva's not flip-flops) - but a floppy shoe seems to defeat the purpose of clipless pedals.

I actually have a few different pairs of shoes, depending on the bike.  On my cyclo-cross bike, I have a pair of platform/SPD pedals so I can wear regular shoes or "spin" shoes with the recessed cleat.  Then I can just walk comfortably off the bike.

For the road & tri bikes, I use Look Keo pedals.  I like the platform of the Keo and don't find them as difficult to unclip as SpeedPlay pedals.

I did see a set of slip-on rubber soles for cycling shoes at my LBS the other weekend.

Oh, and Artist, don't worry about the fall.  Mine was at a stop-sign on a trail about a week after getting my first clipless pedals.  I unclipped my right foot and then leaned to my left and went over almost clocking my head into a concrete post.  Then I gave the quick "did anyone just see that" glance and got back on.

Rudys are really good sunglasses.  I use them for racing and have a "fun" pair as well -- nice stuff.

Felt great to get 2+ hours of riding in the dirt today.  Pre Rode the Burlingame Time Trial Course in Rhode island this morning with a group of 5.  I bit muddy, some awesome decents, and just "ok" climbing.  The place is not overly technical.  It's pretty fast singletrack for the most part.  Race is April 3rd.

Garmin reads 2,300+ calories spent!!  I know it's just a guide, but I feel it.

Brutal wind today, of course is was a head wind the whole second half of my ride. Rode with Jay again, met him up partway on a big loop he did (I was supposed to go too, but wasn't feel too great this AM). Left my house and backtracked to find him and caught him about 15 miles from my house. Good ride but DAMN the weathermen are idiots. Very little wind was in the forecast for today.

Hi all,

Hope everyone had a good weekend.  Did my 11 mile run yesterday, nasty little hills and 20-30 mph winds.  It was funny when I would come out of the tree cover heading west and the wind would stop me dead.  Not to fun to run in though.  It was a great run and I was even high fiving people the last 2 miles and I was running a faster pace towards the end.  Nutrition was spot on and for the last 20 or so minutes my HR was past LT and I felt fine.

I had some IT pain at about miles 5-6 the continued til about 8-9 and then went away.  I realized it went away cuz it was telling me it would come back with avengence later and it did.  Very pain afterward, but I think I realized that my IT band must still be really, really tight cuz  have been foam rolling tons since my run and it feels better and better each time.  It has been a little cranky lately so I guess the more you train the more you have to stretch and roll.

What was even more awesome about the run is it was obvious the improvement in my fitness the last several months.  The run seemed effortless most of the time and I was running faster.  I felt a smile on my face the whole time instead of a scowl.

carrie - sounds like a great run!! Sorry about the IT pain. I hope it improves quickly!

We had an 8 mile run today, the end of our rest week. We had a good run, but we fought terrible winds also! It sounds like the wind was bad everywhere in the country!

Carrie I went for 6.3ish this morning and had no pain the whole run but within 5 minutes of cool down it was really tight and painful.  To the point I didn't really want to bend my knee.  Stretch, foam roll, ice, elevate and an hour later I was feeling a ton better.  I fear this will be the routine for the foreseeable future.

I had a pretty goo five mile run yeasterday. Tried a new route and was pretty happy. Over dressed for it and the clothing I chose was too heavy-like running with weights on and I knew better.Wanted to quit at mile one, but bargained myself into keeping going until I was far enought away from the house to have to complete a long one.  I came home and did stretching and rolling and felt pretty good. Sure feel the training slack off I've been in.

Scott aand Carrie-sorry to hear you both had pain after your runs , but it was encouraging to hear that the rolling helped you both.

Off to a 5:30 am swim-This is when I hate the time change!

I'll be jumping on the mill for a few this morning +  short trainer ride tonight.  I got a medicine ball yesterday, so I'm going to play this morning.

Yeh, I hear ya.  Been foam rolling multiple times per day.  I know my calves are naturally tight, maybe all my muscles are and need to be treated as such.  My mid-week runs will determine how it is doing.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

Nice runs everyone!

Time change has been brutal on me.  I hate having to wake up in the dark (again).

Heading to the pool this afternoon and then lifting with Shaun tonight.

Happy monday. Heading to the gym for a lunch run in a few minutes.  Damn cold is settled nicely in my chest.  I'm the guy coughing on the treamill next to you.  Hadn't been sick in about a year, then my 3 year old spent a night coughing in my face and here I am.

Went up to Boston yesterday with Kelly, Shaun and Erica for swim videoing.  I could not stay for the video review so I will have to wait to see how messed up my stroke is.

Sorry I haven't posted much, but the work and family schedulehas been brutal lately.  But the quasi-good news is that I have to go to Daytona beach sunday to take some depositions.  So I am hoping for a run before the depo and and an ocean swim after the depo next monday.  Oh, I have a HM on saturday that I am undertrained for so that will be interesting, but at least it assures me a long run this week!

You should have been there for erica's video -- she has two completely different strokes.  Her right side looks decent and her left side is a complete mess, almost like watching two different swimmers.

wish i could have been there for mine... it was pretty silly to not have the room ready, they knew people were coming from out of state.  maybe I should sue.

Well, after getting up at 4:30 in the AM and getting on the road at 5:30 for a race in Manhattan, i get to Mickey D's for a cup-o-joe and realize i did not pack my bike shoes. Back home i go get 2 pairs and get back on the road, easy ride down, find the race site no prob's, get outa the car and get bike off the roof and decide to ride up to get my #. Put shoes on, pump tires, go to get my helmet....helmet...OH NO I FORGOT MY FREAKING HELMET!!!!AAARRRGGGHHHHH

so i desperately ask around for a spare and No Luck Chuck.

I was not able to race, so i watched some friends and went home, you have no idea how aggravated i was. I really wanted to do this race.

What a bummer. For me-I get a little annal before a race-going over every thing I think I will need over and over. I think it helps keep my mind off the prerace jittters. My husband is highly amused by it all, especially when I am holding something in my hands (like my goggles) and freaking out about where they are because I don't see them in the bag.

That really stinks. I think from now on I'll throw my mtb helmet and spare shoes in the car too, sure would be nice to be able to loan them out if someone was in that situation.
