I completely agree with Warren.  I guess it more tough when you have a really competitive mentality....I just don't.  Every race is a win for me.  That might not be the ideal way to think if you really are a sponsored athlete, but I don't really care.  It's about quality of life to me.  I get just as much joy out of watching others do well.

Warren thank you for posting that and I could not agree with you more. For me I am not a seasoned veteran and am just learning the ropes here but I can't tell you how much enjoyment and satisfaction the sport has given me in the very short time I have been involved. It really has opened up a whole new world for me the same way running did when I first started. I think it also helps me keep things in perspective that while I enjoy having the opportunity and the privilege to participate at the end of the day I realize that while it is important to me to be able to do this it is not the most important or only thing in my life. Just being able to do this gives me as much satisfaction as it would to someone who can actually win one of these events.

Vero, have you considered giving that knee a little extra support or have you just been running with it naked?

Actually I picked up a Pro-Tec Knee Strap for patellar tendon support last week and I've worn it for my runs this week. So far so good.

Thanks Warren.  Very good words.  It brought a tear to my eye when you talked about J.

And Jonathan....As a sponsored athlete, what matters (to your sponsors) is the way you act as an embassador to the brand.  You can actually be more valuable to them than an elitist that wins (not that you can't someday)

Thanks Jeff.  I would agree for the most part.  Unfortunately the wins get more publicity than my positive and encouraging attitude.  They want to hear "these shoes took x amount of time off my run" and so on and so forth.  I do a lot better supporting the brands in person than I do on paper is what I am really trying to say.

On the positive side Jonathan, you could really have an impressive "x" given the current state of your running!  (Sorry, that was just too well set up, and I'm still in junior high mentally!)

Well, no bike ride.  My little guy seems to be having a relapse of this cold.  He's one grumpy, snotty little guy.  Poor thing.  I did manage to get some serious cardio done while rearranging his room and packing up clothes that are too small. ~sniff~

Ah well.....it's too stinking windy for an outdoor ride anyway.  Doesn't hurt my feelings.

Ironman Lake Tahoe!  How awesome is that?  I might have to volunteer my time because I might be crazy enough to attempt it!

Stan?  Thoughts?

It is awesome! Tracy go ahead and train and come down and enter. I'm going to spend my Fall/Winter/Summer training for this.

Wow!  I just saw the e-mail.  It's funny because just a few days ago Stan had mentioned it and there's the official announcement!  So it's in September... out of curiosity, what's the weather like then?!  Also, the e-mail mentioned first full IM in California since 2001... what was the other one?  Vineman came to mind, but then that's not IM-brand... did it used to be?  Also, registration begins on Monday?!  That seems crazy!  That just announce it, and BAM, it's decision time!  Or I guess since area triathletes were in the know about this coming to town, it's not so sudden...??

I found out about it through the city counsel. The weather is usually in the 70's around that time of the year.

So I have been MIA for a while. sorry.

I have been crazy busy at work and training. At the end of the month I'm transferring to a new job here and my training times will have to change. I will now be working 6am to 2pm. It's going to take time to adjust.

Last night I came out to my bike after work to find both my tires slashed. I'm not a happy person. going to cost $150 to replace my NEW tires. The person better not let my catch them.

Anyway talk at ya all later. Time to get back to work.

Jo63 - 2012-06-18 11:10 PM http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... Here is my report. Not as exciting as the rest of you but I am feeling better every time I run compared to all the races before! My training is getting longer and longer 20 hrs scheduled for this week, so I haven't had time to even update my training log hopefully tomorrow. Had a good swim and run today, I was supposed to bike but with wind gust to 45 mph I decided to bump it to tomorrow as I only have a swim and weight training! I Still have five or six pages to catch up on I might have to just jump back in from here.
I think that is a bit of an understatement!  20hrs in week is crazy, I am having trouble getting over 10!  Nice work, probably a big reason you were able to knock 10 minutes off of your last race

That was a great, inspirational posts Warren.  The examples you gave of your son can put things into perspective!  Some things we take for granted can be huge for other people.

Reminds me of the discussion I had with my training partner about this past weekends race.  When we were signing up he kept telling me I needed to do the olympic, that the sprint would not get me closer to finishing the HIM in August.  I had to tell him several times that this race was not about training for something else.  This race was about competing, albeit with myself, but competing to beat last years time.  I was not there to compete with him or anyone else, but just to beat my old, fat, ex-smoking butt!

Grumpy, snotty little guys are no fun!  Also they tend to share their grumpy, snottiness with everyobe else.  Hope he gets better soon!

(I hope you handled packing up the little clothes better than my wife!  I thought there was something seriously wrong until she told me she was just cleaning out the closet.)

I'll be reading through the posts a little later, but I just wanted to say, I am SAD!  The July triathlon I was planning to sign up for soon (like, this week) is sold out! I just went to the website. It's the first time they've sold out so early.  I'm bummed.  It's the Pterodactyl Tri, which is a part of a series which I did the whole series in 2010.  Now I need to find another one to do.  It looks like there's a triathlon in my hometown that's usually in August as far as I've known, but this year it's the end of July.  I've never done that one, and maybe I'll do that one.

Jo way to kick butt training, that is awesome!!!  Be careful!

Tracy, hope everything is well w/ the accident, please keep us informed.

Samantha, sorry about your tri filling up.  That is good info though, something we can all learn from.  Tri's are getting more popular, when we have one we want, we need to sign up quick.

From me the swim is getting a little better, I swam 667 yard last night and 533 the night before.  It is not continuous, but hey, from where I started in March where I might get 50 yards total and be exhausted... I making some progress.

Tracy I will send prayers your friends way.
Sam sorry about the Tri, not sure how far you want to travel but there are several in Wi that you might be able to come to?
Karl, way to go on the swim, it is all about consistency, I was in your same shoes, not that long ago and now I am doing really good with my swimming keep it up and it will all fall into place.

So yesterday I was biking and was thinking about warrens post. I thought I am training, who am I trying to compete with? So I Took it easy, kept my HR in check and when I Got home discovered I was faster than when I was trying to push so hard plus it was still pretty windy and 95 out, I am finally getting comfortable in the wind plus I don't mind the heat. Funny thing during this ride I was cruising along and what is up ahead in the road but about 20 chickens.... I thought I wonder if Tracy lives around here

Stan sorry to hear about what happened to your bike and I will never understand why people do things like that. I hope you find out who did it.

Tracy sorry to hear about the accident involving your friend. I hope she is doing well and she will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Samantha sorry to hear that you missed out on the Tri you were looking to do hopefully you can find another one to sign up for.

Karl it's good to hear that you are making progress with your swimming. Keep working hard at it and it will get better. I still have good days and bad days too but just keep working on it you will get there.

Tracy,  sorry to say that happens all too often when the weather gets nice around here.  I hope and pray for healing for your friend.

Stan....someone actually cut your tires to your bike?!  What the heck!?  That's just unreal.  I can't believe someone would do that.  Am I that naive?  What is wrong with people these days?

On a personal note, I went for a bike ride yesterday and got my first flat in three years.  I ran something over with the back tire and it actually tore the inner lining of my tire..didn't even hurt the outside.  Now I have to find a new tire before this weekend's 150 mile ride for MS.  I'm really looking forward to this weekend though.  Should be a great time.  I can't believe Warren isn't doing it with me considering we live so close.

Tracy, so sorry for your friend.  Prayers go out to your friend and the family.  Jonathan is right about the incidence of that around here once the winter weather breaks.  This is motorcycle week up here at the lake and this is often a really bad week for bike accidents.

Weak comeback Jonathan!  If it's the ride I think it is - isn't it over 2 days?  If it was one day, I'd be in.  JK.  Have fun and be safe, and great job on giving back.

And we HAVE to do the Pan-Mass one of these years.  The Junkies will have to support us.  For those who don't know, I think it's the biggest single event fund raising ride in the country, for cancer.  It's a blast and very inspiring as there are tons of cancer survivors at every rest stop.  The fundraising minimum is $4300 this year, so the biggest challenge is the fund raising.

My friend is alive and facing several surgeries to repair her collarbone, wrist, leg and pelvis.  It appears as if her spine is fine.  She is awake and communicative so her brain may be ok.  Someone pulled out in front of her and she broadsided them at full speed.  She is lucky to be alive.

Be careful out there!
