Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I'm heading out this late morning or early afternoon to the great state of Ohio. I would have left already but we are waiting out this very wicked thunderstorm to pass through the area, it was hailing out here for crying out loud! I'm not driving in that I'll wait no rush for me. In any case I'll be staying out in Richfield, OH tonight and then off to Madison some time tomorrow morning. This is totally surreal for me right now, 5 more days to go. One part of me is totally freaking out and then there is the other part of me that can hear the voice of reason which came calling this morning to assure me not to worry, I'm ready and I got this. What a crazy dilemma to be in! Yes I guess it is Taper Madness! |

![]() | ![]() Originally posted by trigal38 I am having a hard with recovery from Saturdays race. I'm kinda surprised. Mentally I'm ready to jump right back into and try to keep my momentum to race one more event (weather permitting) the first weekend in October. But gosh, maybe I better just take this whole week a bit easy? I took off the day after the race. I'm really tired, muscle fatigue and a few spots of muscle soreness in my lower legs. Yesterday I tried to get back on the wagon with an easy 3 mile jog on the trail I always go to followed by one more super easy swim at the outdoor pool before it closes for the season. The run was fine, but my heel was a little sore the rest of the evening. I was so disappointed because it was not bothering me AT ALL just walking around doing normal daily activities which includes hopping, jumping, skipping, galloping and all the other fun stuff we do in the Toddler Gym class I teach. But it feels pretty good today so maybe I can manage this enough to squeak out one more race. The swim was terribly slow and even then my shoulders just did not feel good. My allergies are terrible right now so I know this is not helping. And I am sleeping a lot more than usual. Jeez Dina, give yourself a few days to recover. Hard racing can take a little time. After my aquabike a few weeks ago I took two days totally off with a massage in there. The only reason I started back on day 3 was that I have a HIM this weekend. Give your body as few more days if it needs it, and see where you stand. Oct is a long way off. |

![]() Thanks Warren and I appreciate your perspective having done this type of race before. I sort of felt like since I didn't even do the whole event that I should not need any recovery. But there is no doubt that I left it all out there on the course and now my body is telling me to cool it. I joined some newbie swimming friends for a little open water practice this morning and my legs were cramping from a 1/2 mile swim! A massage is at the top of my list. And maybe a walk with the dogs.
The 4th discipline of triathlon..... recovery. |

I really did this race just to say I've done it, so I wasn't expecting great things. What really happed was I got my butt kicked. 10th out of 13 in my age group. Though the top 5 in my age group were around top 30 overall out of 300. There are some fast 40-44 year olds out there. I came out of the craziest swim I've ever been in among the top half, then hammered on the bike until my calves started to threaten cramping. They held off full on cramping until the long uphill during the first mile of the run. Then, the left one especially, they went into full pain mode. The rest of mile one was ugly: walk/stretch/jog/walk/stretch/jog. After that it was a slow uphill second mile+. Once turned around and coming downhill I was able to stretch the legs out better and run. My transitions went pretty quick, but I did forget to put my sunglasses back on when starting the run.
I made several mistakes leading up to not having a great day. 1. I did not train enough for hills on the bike or the run for this race. 2. I needed to hydrate better the day before 3. I needed to get more than 4.5 hours of sleep last night
Yep! It's a doosie of a race! Fun, huh??? Good thing I didn't do it this year since I have been sick. Vero, that cramping sounds painful. Nice job toughing it out on what sounds like a pretty rough course!
Overall I really did enjoy the race. It was one of those races where you say to yourself "Why the heck do I do this?" while you are in the middle of it, and then afterward you brag about how much suffering you went through. If I had been better prepared for it i'm sure I would have been fine and just had fun the whole time. Maybe next year I'll train for the hills and do it again.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hmmm... i replied to this but dont see it... anyway, I am the CylceOps Fluid 2 trainer. I like it and it's quiet. From what I understand, it and the Kurt Kinetic are the two most popular brands. Not sure the differences, but back when I bought mine I was able to find the CycleOps 2 a bit cheaper. One thing to consider might be if you want a power meter. Then you would want to make sure whichever you get is compatible. Someone was asking about tires. Cant remember who it, but someone told me about this guy on ebay that sells the conti's. I bookmarked it for when I need to replace. Note: I know very little about bikes, tires, etc but I've had these for quite a while and love them. Just make sure they are the right size you need I guess... http://www.ebay.com/itm/270807014531?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trks... |

That's the link I got from Jonathan last year and I bought those from that seller. They shipped pretty quick and have been great tires for me. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Holy cow what a long ride! I made to Ohio late last night or should I say early this morning. We left late like after 2 pm and we did not get into Richfield until like 1 am. We had to make stops along the way and lost a lot of time on the Cross Bronx Expressway. That is the worst 5 mile stretch of road in the world. I think I got like 5 hours of sleep last night. Nothing like having a 70 pound excited lab jump on you in bed to start the day lol. At least we are halfway there and we've had a safe trip up to this point. We should be in Madison this evening. Thanks again to everyone for the well wishes it's very much appreciated. Karl, I'm hoping for 14 hours, that is my target time however it doesn't matter whether you finish in 8 hours or 17 hours you're still an Ironman. I'll try and do the best that I can. JoAnne I have a Kurt Kenetic road machine like Matt. I like it it's pretty quiet and you can pick up the KK bike computer which has a power meter for like $100 bucks. It's a poor man's power meter but it's very easy to train with that over using HR IMHO. Also it's a lot cheaper than a real power meter. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() I have a Cyclops fluid and a 1up USA trainer. The 1up is without a doubt the quietest trainer I have ever seen. Like, I can hear my chain on the cogs and hear the gears shifting quiet. The fans I use are MUCH louder than the 1up itself. I use it in the living room while watching our weekly family TV time with everyone. Not the greatest family time but we’re able to be all together, and the boys eat popcorn while I work off the ice cream. However, I like the feel the Cyclops is a little smoother and more consistent. The 1up works on friction and gets very hot and seems to "slip" from time to time. And it really burns through tires compared to the Cycle-Ops. The Cyclops feels a little more like a real ride. It's in the basement as it's too loud for the TV time. If anyone is considering power, I would now highly recommend the Stages power meter. I have been using mine since mid-summer and love it. Generically, having power changes everything. It’s a quantum difference in bike training and racing. And the Stages version is half the price of the “normal” brands. Still not cheap, but getting into the range of combo Christmas/birthday/special occasion present price. Mine was $700. It comes as a replacement crank arm which replaces the non-drive crank arm. Since I have Shimano compact on both my road and tri bikes, in about 30 seconds I can move the power meter from one bike to the other and have power no matter what bike or wheels I’m using. For me that was a HUGE selling point. Since it measures power only on the left leg, there are limitations but if you’re at the level where those types of differences matter you probably have no issue spending a lot more $$$ to get exactly what you want. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Warren, do you have an earlier version of the CycleOps? Mine is a Fluid 2 and it is super quiet. Question about power meters- How do they work? Can you hook them up to any trainer or are their certain trainers that are compatible w/ power meters? |

Can you hook them up to any trainer or are their certain trainers that are compatible w/ power meters? I have the fluid 2. It's quiet, but nowhere near as quiet as the 1 up. The 1 up literally makes no noise. Some trainers have power meters either built in or as add ons. They would be specific to the trainer you are using. The ones I'm talking about are part of the bike, so they will be equally usable on any trainer or outside as well. There are two main types of power meters - crank based or wheel based. You either replace the crank or the wheel with a power meter based version. Then you have a head unit (like a Garmin) which picks up the data and makes it displayable. There is an awesome indoor computer program called TrainerRoad which also picks up power data and displays it on a PC while you ride. They have training rides mapped up giving you target power to hit as you are riding. It makes trainer rides a LOT more interesting and tolerable, as well as really targeting your indoor workouts. They also have virtual power which works even if you only have a speed/cadence sensor. It's not as accurate as real power, but it's a super substitute for indoor training if you don't have a power meter. |

![]() | ![]() Tony, I hope you're safely in Madison. Relax over the next few days and focus on what you've already done and what lies ahead for you. Do not pay attention to all the super fit looking people and get psyched out. You'll be passing them on the run anyway after your perfectly executed bike leg! I love the quote that your racing self owes your training self a full out honest effort. The training self has put in months and months of work at all hours of the night and day, so make sure your racing self pays him back! And tell the EN guys hi from Leigh Boyle through me through you if you get a chance to see them at the four keys talk. After Sunday I'll give my dissertation on bike gearing for triathlon racing and training for mortals. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() FULL IM THOUGHTS TAKING ROOT.... SO, my hubby walked in on me while I was perusing the IM events on the computer this morning... you would have thought he caught me watching inappropriate material on the internet.I tried to click out of the page and ended up on Facebook, not much better since I was reading the posts by our local Tri Club of all those doing IM Coeur D'alene and Chattanooga next year. Anyhow, much to his dismay, the full IM distance has taken root in my brain. I am planning on running a full marathon next February and doing a HIM in April.... I am considering signing up for IM Tahoe, CA for September 2014. Am I being unrealistic? My dad owns a condo in Mammoth Lakes, CA so I can fly there about a week prior to acclimate to the altitude and dry weather. Plus, he has friends that own property in Tahoe and I am pretty sure we could stay somewhere for very minimal cost. |

This would be a great way to get dialed in for nutrition and be ready to rock the IM at Wisconsin. I would most likely opt for Steelhead to save time and traveling expense. Lis is already opting for for some panic as I get ready to register for IMWI. We have so much going on next summer with 2 different weddings and Kyrie's graduation and Lis already had her freak out about all the money going out the door. This should provide her with a reasonable way to relax her mind some. I had already spoken to her about making sure I got another 70.3 prior to Wisconsin so she's aware. _________ I have caught up on all of the posts that had been left unread over the past couple of days. We were traveling and finalizing our last few hours of vacation on the beach Tuesday morning and then back through Columbia Tn. for the night on tuesday night. We arrived home yesterday afternoon about 4:15 and I was fairly trashed from the driving and lack of sleep on vacation. The time change kept my body clock on Indiana time and I was up most morning before the sun while in western Florida. While in Florida I didn't get any WO's in at all. I had planned some running and swimming but the bike crash didn't allow for that much time in the water and I never seemed to get myself ready for a run, mentally. There was a little bit of disappointment that I didn't run on the beach but the tide was much higher this year than last, or so it appeared. lAst year there was harder packed sand at the water's edge that provided a decent running surface. This year the water came right up to the loose sand, so I ditched the thought's of running in the loose sand. I am planning a 5 mile run in a few minutes but I have to let my wound dry up a little bit to ensure I don't have blood running down my arm during my run. I'll also have to leave the chance, remote as it might be, to call off the run of my knee causes any issues. The suture sight is directly on my knee cap and causes some pain as well as an abrasion above and to the left. I'll see how that goes. I do have a follow up at my doc's office today, at the request of the ER in Tennessee, but I don't expect much out of that. Possibly another round of antibiotics, at least that's what Lis believes will happen. |
