Thanks for the advice Kip, I am going to check out the local bike shop here. Plaines Bike Shop.  I know a proper fit is important.  I want it to fit correctly, especially when these bikes are fairly expensive.

It has been so cold here, and full force winter.  I can't wait for Sprimg!!!!!

Good luck hope you find a bike you like I really enjoy the riding. I was supposed to take today off but have felt great during my workouts this week and it got in the 50's today so I got a ride in, the hills still kill but getting better. I hope the local bike shop works out well too while I know they all are out to make money a good shop can really help. Tom my youngest starts travel team practice this weekend and I too will soon be on the road again.

I feel for you. I will have to start using practice times for my workouts. I am at the fields way too much.

Madcow,

Thank you so much for all the advice on puchasing a bike.  You really gave me some important things to consider when purchasing a bike.  I will definately consult the group before the purchase.  I am not planning on purchasing until April or May. Thanks AGAIN!

I just signed up for a tri in England in July. I have been e-mailing back and forth for a while about logistics etc. The guy running the tri club in Manchester has been great. My wife is from England and we visit about every 6 or 7 years as we can afford it. I tend to really fall from grace when we visit so I am hoping this will help me stay on track a little bit. really looking forward to the event and I hope the group is still together to encourage my limited beer consumption until I complete my sprint. Laughing

Kip, take care of yourself and congrats on the tri overseas. That should be fun. Have you made arrangements for your bike? It might be easier if you borrow a bike from someone over there. Contact a tri club in the area and see if there is an extra bike you can borrow or rent from a local store. Sometimes the worst part is trying to ship or fly with your bike.

Snow???? I feel bad because I stopped working out because it was too hot. I guess I can't complain

My wifes brother has a mountain bike with road tires on it I plan on using and he is also  looking to some friends if the size is wrong so I am hoping to locate something. Thanks for the well wishes just trying to ease back into life. This stuff really zapped me this is my first day back at work and just cannot seem to get my feet under me, very tired.

Glad to hear that everyone is doing well.  I have been going to the gym almost every day, but have been slow about posting here.  I need to get my bike out since I haven't ridden it in months--hopefully the tires have not rotted.  Warmer weather today, so I am going to try to go for a REAL bike ride--starting to hate those stationary bikes!  Hope you all have a good weekend!  Melanie

I was able to run outside today for the first time.  I knew running outside was harder than running on the treadmill, but I never realized how much harder.I am now very nervous about my up coming race.  I don't even know if I will be able to run 4mi.  I don't know how to pace myself so I am not gasping for air.  I always just set a pace on the treadmill  and would increase or decrease according to how I felt.  Maybe I just went out to fast and found it hard to recover, I also start the run with a big hill, but no excuses It was just bad all around.  I did run 1.6mi I will try four tomorrow.  For more detail you can check out my training log.

Today I ran outside.  It felt much better.  I started off slower and that made a huge difference.  I was able to run 4mi easy.  whew!!!  My time isn't great, but I can work on that throughout the spring and summer. I live in a very hilly area and my race is in a flat area so I hope my time will be better in a flat area?

Does anybody have any suggestions on proper form when running downhill?  I was really feeling it in my shins when doing it and I don't want to get shin splints again!

Hey Congrats! I was going to say, don't worry it will just take some adjusting to running outside because you still have the fitness you earned while running on the treadmill. But it seems you have already figured that out.

Here is an article on running downhill

Had soccer and a wedding this weekend so I was not able to do much but after that flu I had I was pretty zapped that was a wicked little bug. Did a long run and had to run with the recruits later felt pretty good finally getting my energy back. I am currently swimming 2 days a week but this is my weakest event should I try to swim some more? I could probably squeeze a morning in and not do my strength training??

IMO, swimming is the most imoprtant leg. It usually is the easiest and shortest, but if you have a bad swim, the rest of your race is shot. I try to get to the point where I could swim the distance I want, in the time I want, in my sleep. Once I am at that point, I know I will have a good race, especially in the longer distances.

So, to answer your question, Yes. Swim more.

My old coach told me once "Spend more time working on your weakest leg than your strongest leg'. That has been advice that I stilluse today.

Glad you are feeling better.

Had a pretty good week feel much better. I did aggravate my shins but they felt fair on todays run just had to watch the pace. Daughter has 2 soccer matches this weekend but I will try and get up and swim they are fairly local so not to far to drive the following weekend will be a sure soccer travel weekend for a tournament but will try and plan training around the trip if possible.
