Swimming is improving, working on bi-lateral breathing, hardly swallowed any water today. It's going to take some time, but I am enjoying the challenge.

Keep it up, you'll get there!  I did my first race only able to breath to the left

How important do you think it is to be able to breathe on both sides? I can do it, but I am MUCH more comfortable breathing only to my left. Is this something that is worth working on for the race, or is it really needed?

I haven't heard or read anyone say that its a must.  There are some pro's that swim at the front of the pack that don't breath on both sides.  I find that looking left AND right helps me go a little straighter.

The only reason I am trying to learn the bi-lateral breathing, is because swimming any kind of distance is completely new to me. I did a little research on the web and found a site called "Swim Smooth", and they recommend learning to breathe from both sides, as Steve said, you swim straighter, and it can help with the sun, swells, etc.  I am practicing in a 25 yd lap pool (not a lot of open water here in Arizona),  I thought I had pretty good endurance, but swimming seems to be a different animal.  Anyone who has any advice, I'll take it.

Piece of advice: Don't wait till your tri to practice open water  swimming! I did it and I swam in zig-zags the whole way. Sighting is also very important!

* I am NOT a good swimmer

Welcome back from the  abyss ... well ya I took a mental week off.

As it turns out my GF and I are now EXPECTING!  So we've been going through a little bit absorbing the news and making plans for the future.  I've been getting back on the horse, so to speak, this week in doing my workouts.

1x dynamic circuit
1x Self defense Class
1x hour Spinning
1x strength circuit

All in all it has been great and now its time to refocus.  Since now I'm only going to be racing once this year it comes down to the only race being the 70.3.

~50 miles for me on the bike today. Those include climbing Mt. Tam here in the Bay Area and ups and downs all the way from SF to Stinson Beach. First time out with the Tri Club and had a blast. Some of the descents were scary but the 6 mile uphill to Mt. Tam was definitely the highlight! KNACKERED

I'm back!  Been a rough travel week with another one coming up.  Only managed to get in two bricks but they were quality bricks!  Very happy with today's 35miles. I'm trying hard to keep the cadence up and managed over 80 throughout the hour and a half.  Legs felt totally fine during the 3 mile run afterwards.  I guess 4 days off make a big difference.

For the week:

B:
53.34 Mi
2h 31m
R:
5.00 Mi
46m 23s

Chris - congratulations!!  Thats awesome, best of luck!

I'm off to Orlando till Thursday.  Jamb packed schedule but hoping to get some miles & swimming in outdoors.

I'm starting to feel better.  4 hockey games while on the mend.  Blah!

Of course my 1st day back into my schedule I got called into work early, so that killed my morning workout.  So, back to the grind tomorrow.

We'll be here! Sorry everyone, can't post the group summary due to some technical problems during this trip. Hope everyone's week is off to a good start. Enjoyed getting in a mile in an outdoor pool yesterday. Am not missing he weather waiting for me in NJ. Two more days of FL :-)

What do you guys think of this training plan?

Plan 1
 AMPM
MondaySwim
TuesdayStrenght - PushMed Bike
WednesdaySwimMed Run
ThursdayStrenght - Legs
FridaySwimStrenght - Pull
SaturdayLong Bike
SundayLong RunSwim

The changes that I have done as compared to my current plan are the following

  • 4 swim session because it's my weakness and I really need to work on it
  • Removed short bike and short run
  • Added 3 day strength routine consisting of a push/legs/pull routine

I will be doing a brick every 3rd or 4th week on Saturday, and on that week I will have 2 medium runs instead of moving my long run to Wednesday.
