Dtharper - 2009-05-04 12:21 PM While preparing for my first, I have a question on transitions. How does everyone set up thier transition area? Any tips to make the transition easier?
Thanks!
Here's what I've been doing in transition, and it seems to be what others around me are doing more or less as well. I hope this helps.
Everything except the bike goes on a towel. I don't really use the towel for anything -- it's just easier to keep everything together that way.
I make sure that my hydration and any food
(none for a sprint
) are on the bike
(or for my Oly I just put a Gu in my tri top pocket
); helmet upside down on the aerobars; sunglasses inside helmet. Bike computer on.
(I forgot this once.
) I've been doing the flying mount most of the time
(shoes on pedals, held up with a rubber band
), but if you're not going to do that
(practice it if you are!
), then have the bike shoes ready to put on. Leave the socks at home. For the run, I just have my shoes ready to slip on
(they have the elastic laces -- no tying
), and they are sitting on top of my run belt and hat.
That's it.
As for tips -- do it quickly! Don't think of transition as a chance to rest. Even if you start out slow on the bike or run to catch your breath, better that than resting in transition. At least you're making some forward progress. Don't drink in transition. You can do that on the bike, after you get going, or just before T2. Don't stop to put your run belt/watch/hat on in T2. Just grab them and go. Put them on during the run out of T2. Most of all: familiarize yourself with the transition area and know ahead of time exactly where you'll be going at each stage.
Good luck with your race. I just did one yesterday. I hope yours goes better than mine did. I blew up on the swim, which made for an ugly day.
