Dtharper - 2009-05-04 12:21 PM While preparing for my first, I have a question on transitions.  How does everyone set up thier transition area?  Any tips to make the transition easier?
Thanks!

Here's what I've been doing in transition, and it seems to be what others around me are doing more or less as well.  I hope this helps.

Everything except the bike goes on a towel.  I don't really use the towel for anything -- it's just easier to keep everything together that way.

I make sure that my hydration and any food (none for a sprint) are on the bike (or for my Oly I just put a Gu in my tri top pocket); helmet upside down on the aerobars; sunglasses inside helmet.  Bike computer on.  (I forgot this once.)  I've been doing the flying mount most of the time (shoes on pedals, held up with a rubber band), but if you're not going to do that (practice it if you are!), then have the bike shoes ready to put on.  Leave the socks at home.  For the run, I just have my shoes ready to slip on (they have the elastic laces -- no tying), and they are sitting on top of my run belt and hat.

That's it.

As for tips -- do it quickly!  Don't think of transition as a chance to rest.  Even if you start out slow on the bike or run to catch your breath, better that than resting in transition.  At least you're making some forward progress.  Don't drink in transition.  You can do that on the bike, after you get going, or just before T2.  Don't stop to put your run belt/watch/hat on in T2.  Just grab them and go.  Put them on during the run out of T2.  Most of all:  familiarize yourself with the transition area and know ahead of time exactly where you'll be going at each stage.

Good luck with your race.  I just did one yesterday.  I hope yours goes better than mine did.  I blew up on the swim, which made for an ugly day.

this is my fav part of the race;-)
or at least the one part i have down well.

we'll assume this is for a sprint (longer distances adjust accordingly).

first things- THIS IS PART OF THE RACE! and is the only part where you can actually get FREE SPEED.
that said, before you start a few things to keep in mine. do it smoothly first, once you can do it with no wasted time then its time to speed up.

Take only what you NEED into transition, nothing else. no bucket, sandwich, and kitchen sink.
When i walk in i have: bike with shoes attached (dont do this unless you know how), running shoes, helmet, and number belt if the race requires a run number. thats it.

Put a water bottle on your bike, you may not need it but its not going to slow you down, and if you decide you want some better to have it there.

i rack my bike by the seat, running shoes go under with the heals apart, helmet goes there upside down, with the straps outside of it. baby powder in shoes to help wet feet slide in. no socks.

make sure you know where your bike is racked, running in after a swim your head will not exactly be working right;-)

Race # 1 is done and over with. My very first tri and despite the rain all morning and through the 1st half I loved every second of it. I'm posting my race report now and for my very first one I don't think I did half bad. I placed 266 out of 700 and 36 out of 171 in my age group. I was hard on myself at the end for not doing better but looking back it was just my first and i've already signed up for the Eppies Great Race in July so gonna start training for that now. Taking today off working out to relax but I'm all in for this sport.
Tri sports rule!!
Later all

hey guys i was just posting in here so that you all didn't think I was dead.  My fiance lost her job last week and i've been spending my time working things out financially and trying to support her emotionally.  I'm getting slowly back into the pace but I lost about a week of training.  Sticking to short runs/rides until I feel like i'm back into the swing of it.

Sorry to hear about that.  It's a tough time for a lot of people, though that doesn't make it any easier...

Glad to see you are staying active as possible.  I've found that staying somewhat active even through stressful times can help with the stress.

the one thing i can control right now is my level of fitness and while I took advantage of having all day to enjoy and get out and ride, now since the weather is REALLY getting nice here i'm going to take more advantage of it.

Got a nice long ride in a few minutes.

What is everyone riding this season?  I am in the market for a new bike (my 1999 Trek mtn bike is not the fastest) and am just curious to see what everyone else is riding.

David,

Congrats on your race. Is there a race report?? And a pic of your new bike...please.

I also have a question..about riding hills. Is there an optimal cadence that should be used when climbing? And should I try to stay seated as much as possible? I am talking about longer climbs not the really short steep one.

I hope everyone has a great week.

Chris

I ride an 04 Trek Equinox 9 pretty much decked out. Not bad for a newbie if u ask me but i'm still learning how to ride it correctly Took 36 out of 171 in my very first race which i'm totally stoked about so looking to train harder and improve on the next race.

for longers hills (triple T half course comes to mind, and real climbing), i try to stay seating and keep the cadence up, once it starts dropping off (say below 70) its out of the saddle for me. in shorter races/shorter climbs though i will do what it takes to get over it and recover.

that said person to person it differs a lot, i know some guys that are out of the saddle the min the road starts up and others that stay seated much longer.

i would practice getting comfortable with both and then letting your legs decide, but for the most part longer climbs are better suited to staying seated and jsut getting up when you need the extra kick

Jeff, Really nice results on your race. That is just great and I'm sure you will have better and better results as you get more experience.

David, I'll try to keep the cadence up on the hills. And nice race report. 16 sec Trans..what did you do run in your bike shoes??LOL

Have a great Tues everyone....and what is everyone doing today??

I have an optional rest day or easy ride. So I'll think I be riding since it is not raining today, for a change.

Going for a group ride tonight.

Also - I have a Specialized Allez road bike.  Figured I would get a few races under my belt before I purchase a tri bike.

Heyyy everyone!!!
I saw that I'm not the only person with specialized allez road bike.I traded it last year for my mountain bike when I decided that mountain bike is not more for me.I had not time to ride on the parks during the weekends. Here is my bike before the updates (now it has aerobars, 2 carbon cages and finally got my new saddle today)  I'll try with a profile design tri-strike,the old one that comes with the bike is very uncomfortable when I ride in aero position. If the profile design doesn't work I'll go for the adamo racing.
I hope everybody is ok !!!! see you around !!!
