Kate_r - 2008-05-06 4:34 PM Well the results are in and my total time was 1 hr 5 minutes and 51s I placed 70 out of 83 overall, was 20th for the swim, 55th for the bike and a miserable 78th for the run. I'm not disheartened though I made it to the end, I did really well on the swim and cycle and to be honest I couldn't have managed that run at that space as little as less than 4 months ago so in my book I rock! There's an official race report on the reports page for anyone who cares to take a look. So how's everyone else doing and what have you planned for the rest of the week? Also, anyone got any ideas of what I need to do to improve my running? At the moment I've been going at a steady pace and gradually increasing the time but I'm not sure if I should be focussing on something specific? Thanks

Run more

PS, I was 109th out of 116 overall for women, in my first triathlon. MOP in the swim (great), but DFL in bike in my AG and second to DFL on the bike overall. It gets better

Sorry, I'm not up on my acronyms and my brain is a little slow--what does MOP and DFL stand for?

Kate--looks like a great swim to me!

MOP - Middle Of the Pack

DFL - Dead F-ing Last.

Others:

BOP - Back of Pack

FOP - Front of Pack

DNS - Did Not Start

DNF - Did Not Finish

Yes, you will sometimes see on here DFL > DNF > DNS. (meaning, DFL is better than DNF or DNS).

For me, consistency was the key.  I made sure to do at least three runs a week and for awhile (when I wasn't biking at all) I did four runs a week.  I just kept at it and kept at it.  It took about 3 or 4 months of consistent running before I felt at all comfortable with my pacing.  I think the hardest thing for me was learning to go slower - I spent less time gasping for air and was able to do a longer run once a week.  As my ablilty to go longer improved, my ability to go faster at shorter distances also improved.  I'm about 6 months into a consistent running schedule and I'm really starting to see times drop.  It really is about patience and perseverance - you just have to work through the growing pains.  Wow...I think that was a really wordy version of Chrissy very succinct, "Run more."

Oh heck yes, that's the principle I was working on. A number of the marshalls commented on the fact that I was still smiling at the end but to me it's all about being there. I know full well that the additional weight I'm carrying isn't an aid to my progress but I'm determined to finish whenever possible and it mean so, so much to me just to be taking part that I really didn't care if I came last as long as I finished. You may be surprised by how you do but the main thing is to enjoy it.

Oh and thanks Chrissy and Emily for the advice - both the long and the short versions
It's certainly given me hope that I'll get there in the end - after this month (and the 1st of June) then the next Tri will be a sprint in October so the plan is to spend from June to October concentrating on the running and the core exercises.

Andria, glad to hear you are back and recovering! Take it easy, and try not to worry ... I know it's tough, money is a huge stressor, but that's not what your body needs right now.

To everyone else who raced, I am sorry I don't have the energy to respond to you all individually so I will once again say - AWESOME JOB!

I have had a horrid day full of school work and dentists appts. I spent almost 3 hours on the phone and online this morning, doing a "live" tutorial - it really took a lot out of me! I was hoping to get the bike out today, but it's almost supper time and I'm exhausted. So today will be my off-day, instead of my plan for Thursday to be my off day.

I'm starting to really freak out about my first tri of the season ... it's in 2 1/2 weeks - May 25. It's a sprint, so I know I'll get through it ... but I really think that I'm going to embarrass myself! I know I have NOT been training as much as I should be, but unfortunately when life gets crazy (like today) training is the first thing to get dropped. I just hope I have the base fitness levels to get through it, and will do my best to get out on the bike a lot in the two weeks leading up to the race ...
I work this weekend for the last time - Fri/Sat/Sun, then am done that job FOREVER! ... so I'll have more time to train after that, I keep telling myself. ;-)

Hey folks - how is everyone doing so far this week? Any grandiose plans? I am doing another 50-mile ride on Saturday morning, and then two of my friends (one is a distance-runner-turned-triathlete and the other is a distance runner who hates triathlons) are putting together a hash run that evening I think we are only having one beer stop and there will be water/soda for those who don't want beer. Beer will mostly be afterwards

mmmmmm ... beer ...

Man, I am really really really really really sore from Sunday's soccer match.

Gonna have to fix that with a kickaround tomorrow afternoon.

Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager is really really really really really really good beer, and they actually have it at my local Shop & Stab.

And don't underestimate the power of the bike.  I've heard more than a few knowledgable folks say that time in the saddle will improve your run.  I think there is a two-fold benefit.  You can spend a lot more time on the bike than you can running - so you're getting a ton of aerobic benefit without thrashing your body.  Secondly, the better you are on the bike the more you have left in the tank when you get to the run.

Our local Kroger isn't too far from the not-so-nice parts of town, so it can be frequented by ne'er-do-wells, baby-mommas, etc a lot of the time.

Hence the name. :)

Haha, that's amazingly un-PC, but still pretty funny

In college, there was a 24-hour convenience store around the corner called Symphony Market - we renamed it "Syphillis Market", b/c of the less-than-clean conditions of both the store itself and its usual patrons (not including us drunk college kids).

Hehe...my brother worked at a Kroger that got dubbed the Krogetto.  Crazy stuff was always happening at that place - and not the good kind of crazy.

Off-topic from baby-mommas and stabbings .... let me pose a question:

I'm a little peeved. I'm hoping you all will tell me I have a right to be peeved, and not tell me that I'm just being incredibly selfish.

I agreed way back in October to be part of a relay team back home in Alberta (a 14-16 hr drive away) - the Banff-Jasper relay. 15 legs (so 15 runners) and 3 support crew. At the time I agreed to do it, the team consisted of mostly good friends and old co-workers that I knew well and was really looking forward to spending time with - kind of like a happy little reunion but with a relay run thrown in.
Well, since then, EVERYONE that I know has dropped out and has been replaced by people that I don't know ... so the race would be me and 17 strangers. I know the team captain vaguely, we used to work together but never really spoke (large office) ...
After much much thought, deliberation, and many conversations with my mother - I decided to pull out of the race ... lots of reasons, but the foremost being I didn't want to spend my very valuable vacation time and dollar on a trip to a place I don't really want to go, and spend 3 days in a very isolated place with people I don't know. (Remember I've quit my job and have a brand-new business .. this means I have NO extra money!) My initial desire to participate in the relay was to get together with old friends. Also - even though we had a facebook group and an email list set up, we were not coming together as a team. I attempted several times to get team discussions going and hopefully get to know some of these strangers ... offered my services as a fitness leader and nutritionist, tried to get a debate going re: team shirts or sweats, tried to get a conversation going about where we were going to stay, and transportation issues (this is a very small and isolated place - didn't want to be stranded there!) ... NOTHING. No response from a single member on the team.
So - I decided to pull out.

Now the team captain is refusing to refund my $100 entry fee, which I paid in October. I know I have been replaced, so one of two things is happening here; either the replacement runner did not have to pay their $100, or the team is banking my extra $100 to use however ...
The captain is telling me it's like when you enter a normal race and DNS - you don't get a refund then. IMO that's completely different.

The question is: is this fair? Shouldn't I get my $100 back?

I agree. We WON'T let you disappear. Keep us informed. Hang in there and check in with your progress. Hey at least you have a reason for being DFL. That was me on my first century ride. I took so long the cleanup truck decided to ride behind me with its lights on to inspire me (to try to make me go faster). The driver apparently wanted to go home. It was kind of humorous to have a personal escort across a finish line that had been dismantled two hours previous to my arrival.
