I'm up for the Pushup Challenge although it may be depressing.  I've taken strength and core conditioning classes for the past year and a half.  We do a lot of ab work, planks, push ups, etc.. and I just feel like I get weaker and weaker.  My 2 kids have not done anything for my core.  I wonder if I will ever recover from that.

If it makes you feel any better, we can be depressed together!  I know exactly what you mean about what 2 kids do to your core.

I wonder if this same 100 pushups technique will work for situps too??

It would be nice to have a rock hard six pack!!

When push-ups are done correctly(the hard way ) they are a great workout for your core.

No promises, but people who PM me addresses may receive some of my holiday baking.

It is gluten free...and it is delicious(as hard as that is to believe, it's true). I have converted many GF skeptics.

Without trying to be to graphic, I'm not sure if its possible to get a strong core again.  I had 2 c-sections and not by choice but cutting through all of those muscles twice just can't be good.  I still have a very difficult time w/ lower abdominal crunches and sometimes still get very sharp pains there if I push something.

I'd welcome any suggestions or tips from ladies in similiar situations!

Happy Tuesday - only 2 days til the Big Day!  Sorry but I'm a Christmas baby so I get overly excited about Christmas.  I can't wait to see my kids open their presents.

I used this core work out in my Oly training this past year and it worked very well.  I should probably get back on it actually.

Some of these may not be comfortable for you, Samantha, but you can lower the intensity and reps of them, and there are a few that strenghthen your lower back as well.

Oh, and you may not want to hear this, but you know what makes for a really, really, really good core workout?

The butterfly

Backstroke is good, too.

I'm right there with you!  My daughter is 15, so she's no fun anymore, but my 5 year old son is really into Santa this year.  I'm looking forward to Christmas morning.  I'm also on vacation between Christmas and New Years, so I'm excited for the holiday to get here.

Are you crazy!  I can barely do freestyle.  I can't backstroke unless I'm in a wetsuit or maybe swimming in the Dead Sea.  And the butterfly looks painful.  But thank you for the link, I will check it out.

I can't remember who posted about starting the challenge on New Year's day but that sounds like a good idea to me too!

Ugh.

My daughter tried to teach me butterfly.  She was laughing so hard she couldn't breathe.

I'm thinking we might get a decent amount of core work just doing the dolphin kick with a kickboard.  Maybe?

I'm not looking forward to the days when my kids could care less about me and Christmas morning.  But in the meantime, I'll enjoy the time.  My son is almost 5 yrs and my daughter is 2 1/2 yrs. old.

Definitely enjoy it while you can.  Take it from me, time goes fast.  You wake up one morning and your kid is in high school and you end up deciding to do a triathlon so you don't feel old.  (I'm already aiming for an ironman the year she starts college.)

Of course, you are already doing the triathlon thing, so you will have to come up with something more radical!

I'd do it without the kickboard.  Just swim like a dolphin underwater, come up and get a breath, go back under and swim like a dolphin some more.  We've actually done sets of those in the Master's class I used to go to.

Alrighty folks, I'm taking the Pushup Challenge.

Does anyone want to join me?

I completed day 1 week 1  of the push-up challenge last night!!

This morning I arrived at the pool before they could take the pool cover off, I had to wait several minutes in the freezing cold half naked (38F cold for me!!)  did my 30 minutes and ran to my 1hr spin class soaking wet..

Great job on starting the challenge - I was going to run at lunch today but it is too cold.  I ran yesterday when it was freezing and I think I'll wait for the warmer, albeit rainy next few days.

I just got my running plan printed for my half marathon in March.
12 week plan - 1:59:59 goal - start date Dec. 29.  Just in time to run off those cookies.  LOL

This is a question to all of you swimming enthusiasts.  Do you actually count laps or do you check pace and do the math?

For the life of me I cannot keep track of laps (I'm in a 25yd pool)  Is there a secret?  I've tried to count 50's or 100's, count by 2's, or every third odd numbered lap... I always get lost...

I've just resorted to checking pace per 100 in beginning, middle and end of my swim and doing the math.  I'm a data guy and it really irks me to know that I'm guesstimating distance

I count up every time I do a turn on the other end of the pool.  Most of my swims are just sets of 100-400s so it's not to bad.  The most I have to count to is eight.  Every now and then, when I do a long swim, it gets kinda tricky.  I did a 2000, 1500, 1000, 500 swim once and I pretty much just assumed I was close enough.  In the long run, it's not going to matter if you shorted yourself 50 yards.

sesh im using that now!! 15 reps for me...great core builder.
As far as 100 pushup challenge...i may not be in because i can do 100 consecutive pushups already-if that is what it is about?! but i can sure encourage the heck outta some of my teammates!!!!

I have counting issues...I count each length, that way I now it has to either even or odd.  I still lose count of my laps-it is the ADHD.  I time my sets and will be able to skip the counting soon.  I have gotten to the point where I have a consistant pace.  Sometimes I wear my watch and just hit the lap button every 50 or 100 yards, but is a bit of a nuicance-not very streamline and is awkward with flipturns.

Hey everyone.  I am really excited and just want to share...

As you may know, the Pacific NW has been getting a lot of snow lately.  It hasn't snowed this much in a couple of decades.

Feeling the spirit of the holidays, I wanted to share my good fortune with others.  I decided the best recipients of would be Triguynewbie and his family.  He is my age and has 3 little girls.  He lives in Florida and are expecting Christmas day to be sunny and 70.

I put together a special gift box...

Bought a few pounds of dry ice...

And filled the rest of the box with snow.

don't worry, I took all the precautions of working with dry ice.

I ran it to the post office.  Tomorrow afternoon the Baine family will be recieving a package.  Inside will be a giftbox that is filled with snow from my yard...beautiful white snow that is hopefully still fluffy.

I know, I am 'special', but I love giving gifts that are entirely unexpected and entirely unique-just like me.

Wow - that is an extremely unusual but very fun gift!

I'm glad you didn't choose me because I think if I got a box full of (more) Seattle snow I would have started crying - and not with happiness!

I hear you...I am tired of my toes being cold. I have been wearing 2 pairs of wool socks and decent hiking boots (and they're not too tight) and my toes still feel icy.

I am still enjoying the snow otherwise, but after I get another bout of sledding in with my friend tomorrow, I will not complain if it goes.  The shoveling is a good workout though...and I never expected to be able to use my snowshoes in Ieattle.  I think that I will take a couple pairs of snowshoes and meet my friend with the sled at Discovery park tomorrow.  I like to take the cheapie sleds down some of the hiking trails with switchbacks...corning in a piece of plastic is a challenge, but I made it through all the switchbacks on a steep trail in Carkeek park and it was awesome.  Especially with the creek just a few yards below the trail.

re: the lap question......

I hear ya, I usually count every lap(1X50) so one complete roundtrip, but i gotta be honest usually my swims are between 1000-2700M and i forget!!!!
Ill be like "ummm is this 25 or 26 or 27" cause sometimes ill space out while im stroking.
I think im going to invest in the sportcount lap timer
http://www.sportcount.com/productsNew.php?category=SportCount

thing is 35 bucks and people love it. that way i wont even have to think about it and i can fully concentrate on my stroke and form-unless of course i go off in my daze again......

I am in on the 100 push up challenge.  Will be tough but I am game.  We all starting Jan 2?

 Matt

I think I'm going to do the initial test tomorrow.  Push ups on Christmas!  I've trained every day in December so far, but had nothing planned for Christmas.  Figured with my new brides first Christmas away from her family, I should be spending every second with her.  The pushup test won't take but a second, and I can still log some training so my consecutive days streak will still be alive.  Then, my first day will probably be the 4th.  I'm racing on the third, so it seems like a good idea to start after that.

Happy Christmas Eve!  I'm at work right now w/ my 2 little ones hoping they don't rearrange everyone's offices!

Looking forward to starting the push up challenge at the first of the year.  Also starting my 1/2 marathon training next Monday and my half Ironman training Jan. 19.  Lots of fun stuff coming up.  I hope to use Dec. 26 (my birthday :-) ) to reflect on last year's goals and figure out what I want to do in 2009!

I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday.
