Bootie-lishous

Matt, Be patient when putting your botties on-they can tear pretty easy.  Also, don't walk around too much in them-the toes can wear out.  Now you get out there and RIDE!

Okay- this is my routine that I like (and it isn't working very well right now due to sick dogs and teething toddlers)-

1 short, 1 long run (short being 2 miles, long being 3-ish)

1 45 min swim workout, or 1 30 min swim, 1 40 min swim

2-3 bikes per week; 1-2 short (30 min) and 1 long (1 hour), avg speed 15-16mph.

Mike and I are hoping to sit down this weekend and do some work on a training plan for me.....just need to find the time. He's doing a bike workout day with the Spinervals guy? and our local Tri club all day Saturday, and I'm pricing carpet. The big dog (the one that had surgery, and just got a cancer diagnosis) threw up all over our bedroom this morning, and that carpet is officially done.

so sorry about the dog Anne, but new carpet is great.

I'm just trying to get my runs in, still battling a cough that I can't get rid of.  We leave Sunday for a few more days of skiing this time in WV.  Once I get back I'm hoping for decent weather and to be able to get back on a schedule and stick to it.  Only 11 weeks until my half, it's time to get serious.

I think I have picked my first tri that I"m going to do.  It's July 12 and it's a sprint.  I'm going to add back in a couple days a week of swimming until the 1/2 is over and then I'll spend about 2 months focusing on adding Brick workouts and biking etc.

Anne, I'm sorry about your dog.  It is sad when our pets aren't well.  They are so precious to us.

I'm sorry but ick to draining goop all over the house, ick, ick, ick, just saying.

Look at the training plans on BT and see if there is something you like.  I might be able to cut and paste a plan and send it to you, if its a siver/gold plan.

I am still a little sore after training this week.  I am taking tonight off and will do some strength training and a run in the morning.  I am going to a spin class on Sat.  1st time on a bike in FOREVER!!  Kudos to all of you who suffer through trainers or frozen toes.  I just am not a cyclist.  I struggle with motivation for that.  Maybe I'll be better when I can go outside.

Jo- my motivation for long boring training rides? I have The Tudors on DVD and watch that. I love history and this show is my favorite! We also have The Office on DVD and I watch that on shorter rides. I have also found that intervals on the bike have helped make the short workouts go faster.

One thing I have noticed during my winter maintance training is that when I improve in one area, it affects everything. I realize this probably sounds so silly, but remember this time last year I was just coming off of being a couch potato. I'm constantly amazed and surprised to see that, when my times and form improve in one area, it improves everywhere.

I'm getting to the training plan. Mike is a silver member, jo, so I can cut and paste from him. The deal is that I need to just sit down this weekend on BT and put together something. I have to devote some serious time to it; maybe this evening? We'll see.

Mike is at an all-day training forum tomorrow- I will have him report on it all, and it ends with a Spinervals training session. He's super excited. I am at home, watching the kids, but hoping the big snow storm does not come so I can fit in a swim in the morning before everyone gets up.

Ginny, your training sounds good. You are about to conquer a half marathon- a sprint tri will seem very easy. Swim endurance can be the hardest to build up, so good job on fitting that in now, and adding the bike in later. I think that sounds like a really good plan.

I'm hoping to get some time today/tonight to check on everyone's logs. Between the toddler and the dog (issues issues issues) and the distribution of Girl Scout Cookies, I've been pretty absent this week, and I apologize. Everyone have a great Friday!

Have a great weekend everyone.  I'm shut down for at least today and most likely the whole weekend.  My boy was kind enough to pass his illness along to dear old dad.  I have a dr appointment this afternoon to rule out strep throat.  This REALLY sucks!  Our cub scout banquet is this sunday, and I really can't miss it.  I'm being installed as the new cubmaster, and am pretty much running the whole thing.  I hope I can still talk by Sunday!  Train hard everyone!

No apologies needed for your absenteeism.  Just please stop mentioning GS cookies.  I am so bummed because I didn't buy any this year and I absolutely love love love thin mints frozen as a snack.  I can just eat one or two this way and it satisfies my cravings.  Dang, now I'm going to have to find a grocery store where the little girls are hawking their extras. GRRRR!!

You are a wonderful mentor!  Thank you for all you do!

I've been down asking the girl here that sold GS cookies when they will be in every day since you mentioned them!  I am so craving those chocolate peanut butter ones yum!  We have a couple more weeks though.  I may have to break down and buy a Reese's Peanut Butter cup just to get me through!

Scout hope you feel better.  I'm still battling some coughing and being worn out from my cold.  It's no fun that's for sure.  Good luck on Sunday with the Cub Scout thing

I'm impressed with you guys doing the biking thing indoors.  I think that would be incredibly boring.  (Well I think that with the treadmill too)  My hat is off to you.

Know all of you are busy with fun activities- but boy do we have lots of training updates for you!

First- I finally picked a training plan. This was a huge deal for me, because last year Mike picked the plan for me. Mid January he plunked a folder on the table and said Get To Work. First was a modified plan to get me used to exercising again; then I did the couch to sprint plan from this site. And, once I survived my first tri, I hopped into the middle of a Sprint 2x balanced plan to get me to my second race.

So....after much him-hawwing and whining, I picked a plan. I was complaining mainly because I felt like my winter base training made it impossible for me to do any of the Sprint plans without cutting way back on my training; so Mike said, concentrate on speed. Well, I'm not very fast, I'm not built for speed....so Mike said, hop into a 20 week plan midway and you'll be doing longer distances. The best plan for me seems to be the 20 week Sprint, 3x balanced. I think the running is a bit shorter, but I can make my short days my speed days, and then no one is going to punish me for running longer. I did not do an Olympic plan mainly because I'm a giant chicken.

Second, Mike did an all-day training event with our local tri club hosted by Troy Jacobsen, who does the Spinervals videos and is a multi-sport coach. He has promised me he will write about it tonight for everyone, and he brought home a Spinervals base training DVD. SIGH. I guess my days of watching "Rock Of Love Bus" Re-runs while I daydream on the bike are done.

Well I had a great day of training and learning. Our tri club had Troy Jacobson in for the day for a clinic on triathlons. We covered everything from training to racing. Some of his tips were:
1 Steps for success
Know your desired outcome
Develop a plan of action
Execute your plan
Review your results

2 Keep training Simple

3 Benchmark Tests every 6 to eight weeks.
This will help you in finding you LT for the bike and run
The Run test should be a 3 mile run.
WU for about 15 min
Run 3 miles on a track or treadmill @ 5k to 10k pace
Record splits and HR @ at each mile
This will get your LT for the run

The bike test is a 20 min ride at the highest sustainable pace
Record the avg power, speed, and HR.
This will give you your LT for the Bike.
He said you should use this for training for Aerobic base and Speed work.

Well that is just a few tid bits I wrote down but the best part was the workout we did at the end.
It was one of the hardest 1 hour work out I have ever done on the bike. We started out with a short warm up. then we did a ton of speed work for the next 40 min. Intervals after intervals at LT. Some of the intervals were 3 min and some were 1 min. Also we moved up and down the back and front cog. Then he tells us to get off the bike take your shoes off and do a wall sit for 1 min. ( I am not sure what this is called but we put our hands behind our heads and bent at the knees to the sitting postion and hold it). Sounds easy for a 1 min but it is not as easy. Right from there we did 15 squats. We then repeated this 3 more times. Then we got back on the bike and did more intervals. What a great workout. I also got a spinervals video. I will give you all an update on how I like the video but I hope this will be good for the long rides this winter. Because I am not getting outside till it is warm. I would check out the web site because he did a great job for only a 1 hour workout and I am sure the legs will hurt in the morning. No pain no gain.

I totally took last week off. I'm not proud of that; but that can be my downtime prior to starting my training plan.

My big news- I finally have a real, proper, fits-me tri bike! It is new to me, and Mike found it for me, and he's excited about it, so it must be good. I'll post more on it once it is here. And I am determined to learn all about it so I can be a knowledgable bike rider!

Mike is teasing me that it is a nicer bike than his- a 2006 Specialized with really really good parts. If it is nicer than his, then I am scared, because I know I will wreck it and ding it and he will cry.

Anne - congrats on the new ride....looking forward to seeing it.

I'm still on the shelf.  My sore throat turned into a sinus infection that really did a number on me.   Not only did I feel like I got hit by a truck, and that the truck had backed up over me again, but then it felt like it decided to park on my head.  I was not a happy guy for the past few days!  My doc called in an antibiotic for me yesterday and it was almost instant relief.  Within a few hours my appetite was back and I wasn't as lethargic.  I'm not sure when I'm going to get back to working out, I'm thinking it will be at least a few more days.

Train hard everyone!

Matt

Matt, YIKES. I hope you feel better soon. Sinus infections are rough! And pretty impossible to train with one.

My oldest kid and I both have a cold, so we are coughing and snotting all over the place. Good times!

Okay- I PROMISE that when the bike arrives I will post as many pics as possible. Mike got it for me on Ebay. Here is what I copied and pasted from the Ebay listing:

It is important to note, friends, that I have NO CLUE what any of this means. I am excited by a few things- 1, this bike is sure to be lighter than the 1988? Miyata I was riding; 2- it is certain to fit me better than the Miyata, which was a much larger frame that I had trouble mounting and dismounting during races; 3- I might be able to actually shift gears easily as I ride (the MIyata's gears were down on the frame). I feel as though I do not deserve such a good bike- I keep telling Mike this. Last year it made sense for me to just use his old road bike from High School- at least until we figured out if I was going to even complete a race. Time for me to start learning about bikes!

Woo hoo!  First workout in a week is done!  A very easy 4 mile run before work today.  I'll go for an easy spin tomorrow on my bike at lunch time and then try and get a long run in this weekend.  Next week should be back to normal.  Still have a very slight cough, but for the most part I'm feeling 1000 times better!

Another site I post on is having a March challenge Boys vs. Girls training competition, so I'll be swimming a lot in March - which is good as my frist race in May is a 1/2 mile swim...I want to be able to get to that distance comfortably  and without breaks a few weeks before the race.  All of the TI drills that I was doing are starting to pay off.  Just need to remember pacing when I get in the water so that I don't go out too fast and tire out too quickly.

Nice bike!  I'll either be using my old mountain bike or maybe fixing up an old 10 speed from 20 years ago for my tri.  I am soo jealous.  And I'm with you Anne when I read all that stuff from ebay about what it had, I'm like I have no idea what that all means, but it sure sounds great!

I'm back from a short ski trip to WV, finally seem to have kicked the cold that I had gotten when I got back from my last trip.  The weather here is improving also so I hope that I can finally get consistent with my training.

Absolutely nothing wrong with an old 10 speed.  I would suggest though, if it's been dormant for years, new tubes and tires, and drop it at your LBS for a thorough tune up.

I'd go with the 10 speed. Get new tubes and tires, and a good tune up before your race. I loved riding Mike's old Miyata- I just fell off of it anytime I dismounted. I would discourage using the mountain bike- most people I know who have tried to do a tri on mountain bike have been disappointed- having to work twice as hard as those on road bikes.

Unless you want to tackle an Xterra race- then you must have a mountain bike....

We're working on getting rid of the colds. And my bike should arrive today! The bike, and our kitchen counterops, are all courtesy of our tax refund. We have a long list of other things we need- both of us need new runners, I need a pair of clip pedals and shoes for the new bike, Mike needs a new helmet.....we just need the funds. A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

Back to cold and grey here, so I'm hitting the bike in the basement for a long ride. We (Mike and I) head to FL next week for three days. I'm hoping for lots of running outside and sun.
