Member 31 | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group - Closed Your advice about the warm up helped Mark. I rode an exercise bike this morning for 15 minutes to stretch out and get my heart rate up. After that I ran/walked for 15 minutes without getting the shortness of breath. I alternated 2 minutes walk, 2 minute run and did alright. I averaged a 12 minute mile so I felt pretty good about that.I know it’s not the same as running outdoors but I’ll get there. I've quit trying to do the heart rate thing until I can try the heart rate method Aaron sent a link to. I think I’m planning my first sprint Tri to be the Wet Dog Triathlon. The time frame works since I found out my wife and I are having our second child, I don’t want to plan something later in the season. My plan is to work on running and biking to build up endurance and then start to train for a triathlon starting the end of April when I can join the YMCA for the pool. I’ve got a couple of places scoped out for open water swimming once I can build some endurance up in the pool. The race is July 18th so it should give me 12 weeks of training. |

The race is July 18th so it should give me 12 weeks of training. Make sure there is someone to watch you when you go open water swimming just in case something goes wrong. Good luck with the training, hope it goes well. What gels/energy drinks does everyone use when training or racing? I use gatorade but I don't use any gels. If I'm on a long ride I take some jelly beans which are good. The HIM I'm contemplating doing is supplying Hammer HEED and Hammer gels. Anyone have any idea whether they are good? Also, the wave starts for my race this Sunday are up. 8:19 start. That is what sucks about being a young male. They expect you to be the 'fastest' so you start last! Transistion closes at 6:30 so my water will be sitting in the sun for over 2 hours by the time I get to it. For the rest of this week I'm going to freeze my waterbottle overnight, and put it out at 6:30am, and see if it is still ok to drink at 9:00/9:30. If it isn't, I have no idea what I am going to do! |

Member 99 somewhere in the northwest | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group - Closed I have to agree with aaron hammer gels are great, I usually use apple cinnamon but not in the packs we get the large bottle's and put them into one of our amphipods so you can get a little more if you need it. I also just signed up to do my first OLY on May 24, " THE ONIONMAN" in Walla Walla Washington. This will be a good warmup for Boise. |

Anyone have any idea whether they are good? I'm with Aaron on the Hammer Gels, Raspberry is the only flavor I can swallow. I've never tried the HEED. I like the Cytomax Gels, Honey Stingers and Sports Beans. I'm currently trying out a variety of Powerbar Gels. That's what IMKY will be handing out. And you know how I feel about GU. |

Member 31 | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group - Closed I'm thinking about the Wet Dog in AL. It depends on when the Cedars of Lebanon Tri is in TN. They are either having the Cedars of Lebanon Tri July 25th which would work for me and I would run that instead of the Wet Dog. The other date for the Cedars of Lebanon is in September which is when the baby is due which will not work. I would rather do a pool swim for my first Tri but figure the running and biking seem to be easier at the Wet Dog. |

Member 37 Kingston, Ontario, Canada | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group - Closed So since I have been back...I have managed to get my walk-runs to about 6:10 per KM...that is almost average for me when I started...guess the 2 months off hasn't set me back as far as I thought...I am around the 2KM mark right now, but hoping to stretch it out later on the weekend... I have been testing my knee out in the pool and the frantic thrashing and gasping that is my freestyle seems to be worse than before....but I have decided that if I have to switch to breast so I don't drown...so be it...although I did do a 500M baseline on breast and I was 2:26/100M....the problem is, I have no idea what that means????? I do know, that I am way more relaxed and actually enjoy the pool when I am swimming breast....need to get motivated to work on my crawl...but I am getting there.... I am now aware of the benefits of Yoga....did a yoga/pilates video of my wife's and now can apprectiate it....thought I was going to die....never wanted a workout to end so bacly..... Can't wait for tomorrow...we are doing a 24 bike a thon in teams to raise money for the Soldier On Foundation...it is like the Wounded Warriors program in the US, but here in Canada...any way, the CO at the College is training for his 2nd RAAM and he challenged the college to beat him....should be a great time, and some valuable training time on the bike.... |

Member 37 Kingston, Ontario, Canada | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group - Closed However, my longing to run outdoors is actually a breakththrough of sorts since a few years ago, I was too embarrassed to run outside and chance the "real" runners might see me (and hear my asthmatic labored breathing--once I ran up behind a fellow and he whipped around fast and said "oh, I could hear you behind me and I thought you were that dog that is out here sometimes". I don't run nonstop due to breathing issues. I have, in my old wise age now, accepted my little weird run a little walk a lot breathe like a dog self and am okay with being out there That made me laugh, now I know I am not the only one!!!! |

Member 37 Kingston, Ontario, Canada | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group - Closed We had 15 people on our team...so we divided it into 45 min intervals....some people did 2 and some did 3.....I did 3 on the spin bike and then did another 1.5 hours on my own bike in my trainer, adjusting the bike for comfort...I just had aero bars put on (wow is that ever comfortable) so had to adjust my seat height for the max push with my legs, while being comfortable... |

Veteran 286 Brisbane, Australia | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group - Closed Congrats on the 24 hour cycle. INSANE! But then again, you are a triathlete so it all makes sense. I had my first race of the year (2nd of the season) on Sunday. A sprint which I did in 1:22:00. It was only 2mins outside my goal of 1:20:00. My race report is in my log... or somewhere. I worked out that my position overall last year was about 80% of the overall participants, this year it was 65% (if that makes sense!). I'm really happy with how I went. |
