Has anyone read The Triathlete's Training Bible or the Cyclist Training Bible?  I have been wanting to buy one for a while and I am not sure which one to purchase.

I am loving the record heat here in MD.  It was 93 yesterday and today when the avg. is 68.

I have the Triathlete's Bible and it's great but a bit more advanced than let's say.....me  But I love the two books I bought that I previously mentioned on here.  The week-by-week training guide and the swim workouts in a binder.   I think the Triathlete's Bible would be perfect for let's say...you.

2xs about the easing back with the achilles problem. Also, make sure you ice, even ice if you don't run. Icing forces the blood to flush out the bad stuff and bring in the good.

I also have the Triathlete's Training Bible. I feel it is advanced for me; way too much technical stuff at this point.

The Triathlete's Training Bible by Joe Friel. There are two editions at most bookstores: 2nd and 3rd.

I hear you about set backs. Way too much work in the yard over the weekend. Dug out an underground drain pipe, lawn work, brush, etc. Plus, a run Sunday morning didn't help matters at all. My lower back is a mess. Sometimes, us endurance athletes (especially runners, myself) let our egos get in the way of taking a day off. Now, I'm hoping for a swim after school today and to get back to some semblence of consistent training.

I like the Triathlete's Training Bible and another book, Triathlon Revolution by Terri Schneider.  Great for beginners and intermediates.  She is terrific.  Talks basics and then spends time on the mental game.  Grace, you would like her.  She is online too.  Do a goggle.  But, the book is a good read and quick.

There is also another one, My First Triathlon.

I am getting ready after my first two races this summer to read - Going Long.

I did a bike drill in a chilly rain last night.  3X 15 mins @ 95 FTP, nearly at anaerobic.  But things went haywire. I did the first at 100%, then 1`3 mins into the second I had a flat - a tiny pebble has stuck to the rear tire due to the rain and worked through.  I changed it and was short on time so I decided to come back to town all the way as hard as I could go.  I would up at 28 mins at 100%.  I suspect my coach is going to start suggesting we raise my FTP wattage again.  I'm getting stronger.  That is a cool thing.

A good book for beginners (IMHO) is Triathalon 101... very comprehensive and doesn't load ya down with all the technical jargon.  It's a pretty quick read as well.  I think the 2nd edition is out now!

As far as the achilles issue goes... the other guys pretty much covered it.  Slow and steady, do not increase distance or intensity by more than 10% per week.  I have read and I practice no stretching before I actually run.  I do a very easy pace for 5-10 minutes, then get in my MS of running in...if I do any pre run stretching it is after this warm-up run and then I do some light stretching 20-30 seconds of calves, quads, hamms & hip flexors...  I concentrate on the post run/ride stretches, where I spend 5-10 minutes on the same msucle groups + IT bands, glutes and lower back.

I don't use the ice as much as I should, but I have read countless times and heard other athletes swear by the ice treatments.  Good luck!

A bunch of the books cited here can be found at your local library, or gotten through the inter-library loan process.  An option if you want to review them before purchasing.

Also, several pages ago, someone asked about goggles v. facemask for swimming.  I've not used them, but a good compromise might be the aqua sphere Vista - http://www.aquasphereswim.com/us/products/vista_clr_aqua.html - retails for about $25. Looks like they are more streamlined than a facemask might be and probably less chance of getting kicked off during a crowded swim.

I thought I would share a couple pics from the swim start in Corpus Christi... When you are swimming, these waves and rollers seem so much bigger.  (at eye level!)

Holy Cow! Those waves look huge! Speaking of setbacks, I keep feeling a sharp twinge of pain in my right ankle area. I'm going to take the rest of the day off rather than doing 30 min aerobics...but I might still do my PT exercises.  The pain came suddenly as i brought my daughter home from daycare...every two minutes or so I feel it.  Suggestions? I'm going to ice it now...but I still have to make dinner and put the wee one to bed! I hope, I hope this isn't bad. I'm freaking out.  I injured that ankle a few years ago...maybe it was just irritated by me wearing sandals yesterday???

WOW, amazing pictures.  That looks scary!  You have got to be one strong swimmer to get through that!  The water looks very intimidating and I used to lifeguard at the ocean!  My first OWS tri will be in a lake.

Great pictures! Living on Lake Erie, I see waves like that all the time. But, the lifeguards do not allow swimmers into the water. Last year at the Presque Isle Tri, the officials wanted to make it a du because of the waves and whitecaps. I definitely would be scared with those waves.

Definitely think icing it can't hurt.  I would give it a day off and if you do anything swim a bit.  Ice it a few times and then do some light cycling on Friday followed by a lkight jog to try it out.

Pls see my response on your blog.  Not really sure how bad your ankle is, but I had some suggestions for you there.

Do you still feel it today?  Where in the ankle is it located?

I've occasionally gotten weird pains, only to find them gone the next day.  I've attributed that to just normal training pangs.

If it's not hurting today, I wouldn't see why you couldn't run.  If it hurts during the run, cut it short, but otherwise just try out a few slow miles.

Doesn't hurt today...feels a bit funny...some calf tightness. I think I'll play it by ear. My body REALLY wants to move today and pool is out of the question...

A year ago today, I lost my sister-in-law.  Today her writing is up for another prestigious award. Read her story if you wish:
http://www.glamour.com/magazine/2008/05/essay-winner-surviving-cancer

I'm going to put her name on my Tri-top on Sunday.  I'm going to do this for her, and for me (as she would have loved to see this)!
