I am finally getting comfortable on my bike, but I wondering when do you ride on the drops verse the horns.  I just started to think of it this weekend when I was feeling good on long stretches where the road is smooth and the chances of shifting or getting on the breaks isn't likely, so would it be better to drop down onto the drops there or should I stay up on the horns. Just curious about when to ride on the drops.

I don't really ever ride in the drops.  I don't think it's very comfortable and I don't like that you don't have as much control on the bike.  I do have clip-on aerobars on my road bike, so I tend to use those on long stretches instead.

That being said,  I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to when you use the drops or the horns.  Try it out and see which you prefer.  As long as you're comfortable, you should be ok.

I sometimes use the drops just to have a different position on a long ride.  Mostly on long straights and when I'm whizzing down a really fast downhill.  I do keep my fingers on the brakes, just in case.

 thanks for the feedback
I tried out the drops tonight, not really sure what I think of them.  I didn't feel like my control was any different, and I can keep my hands on the breaks just in case.  I didn't find the position all that comfortable so I will keep playing with it this, just for something different on my rides. I am wondering if it might help a bit with flexibility so that when I can eventually afford areo bars, I will be able to get into the areo position without wanting to die...ok i will want to die anyway but at least I can pretend to be prepared.

I just tried the drops tonight too, not particularly comfortable for me either....glad to hear it isn't just me :-)  Kinda missing my comfy mountain bike.

I had a big breakthrough for myself today, I completed by first 5 mile run.  I am pretty pumped about that since on my goals is to be able to run a 10k, and this gets me closer to that goal.  Also looking ahead, I do have plans to  run at least one 1/2 mary next year and compete in oly distance tris next year as well, so I am feeling like I am making good progress to those long term goals.  Just thought I would share.

Edit to finish my thoughts

Wow, I have been finding every excuse in the book to not workout and my race is 5 1/2 weeks away.  Got to get going again!

May goal (starting 5/6)
1.  Get workout in every day
2.  Plan a family fun night

Reward (besides the possibility of finishing race)
3.  Date w/ hubby to favorite restaurant (healthy meal of course)

I never posted my goals for May!

Here they are:

Bike: 100 miles
Run: 40 miles
Strength/PT: 10 sessions

Personal: finish knitting Gypsy Rose Scarf

Reward: I'm thinking going out for dinner with my husband to a sushi restaurant  - probably Kona Grille or a new Hibachi restaurant I've wanted to try

I saw goals from Micah, Dana, Heather, Valerie, and me.  Does anyone else want to do the challenge? You don't have to have goals for all the sports.

Let's try to post progress on our goals at least once per week.  You can post more often if you want to.

May goals:

Bike 250 miles
Run 40 miles
Swim 6000 yards
Eat more fruits and veggies

Reward:
Visit someplace I've never been before.

I feel I may be underestimating my bike goal as I have 2 metric centuries planned this month and it is prime bike riding weather.  Last year, I rode 417 miles in May.  I don't trust the weather, though.  I may be pushing my running goal as I only ran 17.5 miles in May last year.  I really want to keep my running volume up.

Congratulations and great job! The more you run longer distances like that, the easier your 5K races will be also. Sounds like you have good goals and are making great strides toward them. Keep it up!

I never knew the names for the handlebar parts but now I do!! I ride 80% on my horns and use the drops every once in a while. The guy at my LBS told me not to worry so much about riding on the drops...he said it is more important to be comfortable so that is what I do.

Nothing too exciting, just trying to make it a special mothers day for my wife as it is her first.  Other than that I might get out fishing this weekend, opener is sat. but I don't know if that will happen.  Now next weekend when my wife doesn't work, I will be fishing.

I'll do my rain dance here and maybe all the rain will come to Iowa, then I won't have to coach soccer early in the morning and you could have your rideLaughing

How exciting for your wife...my first Mother's Day was very special for me, being the sentimental sap that I am.  I hope you both have a great day!

I bet anything you do (besides leave her with the baby to go fishing) will be appreciated! Hope you get out fishing too...just not on Sunday.

Send the rain to Florida...we need it SOOOO badly! A metric century? Isn't that like 65 miles? WOW!! Good luck - is that a "normal" weekend ride for you or is it an event? How long does it take? That is awesome!

Conversion is 62.1371 miles but I think this ride is closer to 65.  It's an event and it took me a little more than 5 hours last year.  I have another planned next week as well.
