fungi32 - 2009-05-03 1:51 PM Home no internet at campground. I was fairly pleased but I do wish I would have competed in the Clydesdale instead of Master Clydesdale I actually would have placed thirdCry But actually for the first race I was pleased. I did not panic on the swim but it was certainly an adventure never got in any kind of groove except when I swam to the middle of the course and they blew an air horn at me so I would look up and see where I was goingEmbarassed. It was a blast I may be hooked already looking forward to training and next race in July and may do one locally in June. Thanks for all the help, direction and support It was great. Hope we continue because I am sure I will need it

Awesome job on your first race.  Sounds like it was a good time.  Welcome to the sport, there's no turning back now

Here's my actual race link: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

Pet peeve: race directors who take forever to get results up. Not that this applies to Hartwell, but when I did the US 10K last year (20K runners) it took something like a month. And my race results from last week (race facilitated by a different company, comparable group size) still are not available.

I have a training quandary...I stated my goal was to break :30 in a 5k, and then to proceed to a triathlon. But I'm thinking about modifying that goal. I still want to break :30, and plan to by some realistic goal time. But I don't want to wait on training for other races and distances. I think I want to do a triathlon later this summer, no matter my time in the 5k. Also, I am obligated to do two giant 10ks (the Peachtree and US 10K), and given the general paucity of 10Ks available in comparison to 5ks I think I may want to do a few more of those, whatever's available, to gear up for the two big races. What do you guys think?

Also, in light of all this, should I make my race for June a 10k known as the Torture Trail, or stick with a flurry of 5Ks?

There is a very good chance that training for a 10k distance will indirectly improve you 5k time.  At this stage in your training, simply running more will have a positive impact on your fitness.  You'll find these runs getting easier with time and when you finally run that 5k distance again you may surprise yourself.

The only warming I want to give is to not ramp up your training volume too quickly.  The general rule is to add only an additional 10% from week to week.  For example, if you ran a total of 20 miles one week you would want to run a total of 22 miles the next week.  Adding more than 10% leads to a higher risk of injury and is the most common mistake that runners make.  That said, i still think you could conceivably be ready to run a 10k in a month's time.

As far as picking your races goes, I say pick whatever looks good to you.  Personally I like to mix it up, just for the sake of variety, however, that makes it difficult to specifically train for a races.  So this year I decided to train for my 2 HIM and all my other races will be for fun, with the hope that I can PR without specifically training for their distances.

So how's the group doing?  We had some wonderful, dare I say, spring-like weather here the past few days.  I got in a couple of really long rides and runs.  I'm feeling a little run down right now and am ready to call it a night at 8:00.  Haha!

Hope everyone else is surviving their training!

I am taking it easy this week to be top shape Sunday for the marathon. Easy swim today, easy jog tomorrow, easy bike Wednesday and easy run Thursday.

Bye for now,

Way to get those workouts in on the road.  That can always be tough.  How did the post-race recovery go for you?

I just finished finals and am ready to get "back on the horse" because I haven't done anything physical in quite awhile.  I'd like to think I am now just starting to train because I have the time to dedicate to it.  It took me a good 30 minutes to read all of the new messages...looks like everyone is making progress!  Good work!

I did my first brick workout, yesterday morning.  42 minutes biking, then 21 min run. It was actually FINE.  Felt a little weird at first, but I just started at a slow jog and then moved into my pace once I got my legs.

Oooh, and I invested in some tri shorts which worked really well.  My event is now one month away!  eeks!  I'm excited.  :D

Glad to hear the brick went well.  Some people respond differently to them and some have a really hard time finding their legs.  Sounds like you handled it well

Hey team,

I've been off-net for the last week or so.  I had to fly back to the States for a family emergency (nearly lost my Mom).  I returned back to Germany on Tuesday.  While back home, I was only able to get in one running workout (I took a new pair of running shoes for a spin).

We're getting ready for our big move back to the good ole US of A - we have our movers coming next week to pack us out.   I'll lose my bike at that point    until we take delivery of our stuff in PA when we finally arrive in July.

I hope to get some good workouts in the rest of the week, squeeze some in while packing out, and try to maintain some consistency during the transition to PA.   I think I'll revamp my training plan to have more base weeks until we settle down - then start builds up to my Oly in Quakertown, PA.

Going to make the best of it!

njcavill65 - 2009-05-02 6:59 PM Hi gang hope you are all well, greetings from sunny England! I've had a steady week following the race on Sunday, did an awesome brick session on Tuesday in the gym with my tri club. Working with a partner we did 10 x 1km sprints on the spin bike whilst the other guy ran at race pace on the treadmill, once the 1k on the bike was done we swapped, 10 times. This really got the heart, legs and lungs working! On Monday we had a great lecture on nutrition from Science in Sport http://www.scienceinsport.com/(we've teamed up with them in our club). Some really useful info and a load of free samples which I'll experiment with. Good 13 mile run today, legs heavy but not too bad. Go here to see how I looked when I crossed the finish line last Sunday! http://www.revolutionimages.co.uk/gallery/index.gallery.php?gid=129... Have a great weekend and good luck to all who are racing x

Looks like you had a strong finish.  The work-out looks interesting.  I think I'll give that a tri when the weather here in Germany sucks (which is often) and I need to do a brick session.

Thought I would share a foot issue that I've been having and see what you all think.

I mentioned in my earlier post that I got a run in when back in the States to break-in / test some new running shoes.  I bought them because I've been having an issue with my forefoot in both feet.

At about 8 miles + I start to get a burning sensation in both of my forefeet (I think that is how it is said).  It started last season.  It begins around 8 or 9 miles or so, and by 15 or 16 the balls of my feet feel like they are on fire.  Luckily I don't run that far that often (not at all this season, yet - max has been 12).  The problem has started again this year, albeit not as bad as last.

I did some research and nothing that I came up with seemed to fit exactly, except perhaps a discussion I saw that mentioned similar symptoms and attributed it to restriction of the forefoot in the toe box.

I always buy my shoes from a running store with knowledgeable staff - so I don't think I've been in bad shoes.  While home, I went to the local Fleet Feet in Tucson - the only specialty store I could find on-line.  The staff seemed very knowledgeable and I ended up back in a model shoe that I've used in the past (Brooks Glycerin GTS).  I ran the Berlin Marathon in that model and no issues.  I've run Brooks since, but different models (Dyad and up until this past week, Defyance).  While I didn't get up to the plus 8 mile distance on my test run (I felt like I was pushing it going 7 with new shoes and did not want to risk any other type injury) - it seemed as though the problem was not starting.

Anyway - thought I would share what I think is a unique problem.  I'm going to post it to one of the medical forums or chats and see what comes back.

Thom

I'm not sure about unique -- I used to have a similar problem, where my feet would start burning in the center of the foot directly behind the toes. It's not happening presently, I'm guessing because I tossed a particularly nasty set of kitten heels. I think they were constraining my feet at strange and painful angles. But I want to hear if you get anything more applicable to your situation (assuming you don't have any kitten heels.)

Just getting up to go out to the gym with my running partner. I had hoped to do 4 miles at the State Botanical Garden, but it's raining and so portions of the trail will be underwater -- instead I'll do a treadmill workout.

Thom, it sounds like your schedule is about to get pretty hectic. Good luck with your workouts. Hope you can maintain some semblance of a schedule.

And on the foot injury, that is definitely curious. I'd be interested to hear if you get any feedback from the injury forum. That doesn't strike me as a particularly common injury. At least it sounds like the shoes are helping so that's good!

Back home and checking in looks like everyone has been hard at it. It is raining but i hope to get a short bike in today need to mow the yard actually I could bale it where I have been out of town. Neal my post recovery was great I actually felt good the following day I took it off but started back slow the next day. I just need to watch my diet better. Sort of fell off the protein wagon the last 5 days and eating bad while I was traveling but it was good.

Well I'm back from transition clinic and I must say if you haven't practiced transitions do so if you get the chance.  We went through T1 and T2 about 4 or 5 times.  I learned how to flying mount/dismount which is going to be crucial in saving time in transition this year.  I can't wait to race in 10 days!

Great!  Rest up!  I'm looking forward to hearing about it and I hope the weather holds up for you.

I spent 3 miles of my afternoon run in an absolute downpour today.  It was great!  For some reason I really love running in the rain.  I don't think I'd like to do a whole marathon in it though
