So I went out today and bought a whey protein shake mix to mix with skim milk and have in place of my usual (everyday) cereal for breakfast.  It looks to be about 230 cal, 22 g protein and 16 g carbs.  I have an addiction to carbs and I LOVE cereal, but I am trying to definately tone it down.  What do you guys think?  Good choice?

I'd rather eat real food than taking in a protein shake as it will fill me up and keep me full longer.

Egg whites and Canadian bacon was my standard breakfast for years add in some sprouted bread if doing a workout soon after I ate.

I am with Kathy on this.  Have you tried an egg cream.  A couple of eggs in the blender with some milk, I use almond milk, then whatever fruit you have available and finally 4 or5 cubes of ice.  If you worried it will taste like eggs it won't.  In fact I have made these for people and they had no idea there was egg in it.

Edit: Forgot to put 1 packet of splenda and the almond milk is unsweetened vanilla flavored.

Down to 222 from my October 1st weight of 227.   I do not remember the last time I saw 222 on that malevolent scale.   I could not be either happier or more surprised.     Turns out that my eliminating that special meal between supper and the first of my pre-bedtime snacks has paid off big time!!

Went to the gym during my lunch break today; weighed myself before 40 minute stationary bike workout and down 2 lbs this week.

Christy, I have to go with Kathy and Brian on this one but only because having a "drink" as a meal just does not fill me up.  I find I just wind up eating more calories than I would like.  However, if it satiates you and you are simply trying to find a quick way to get more protein then it definitely works.

Personally, I always have hard boiled eggs on hand or when I'm in the mood for cereal I mix it with plain, nf greek yogurt instead of milk to get some extra protein out of it.  I also add in some canned fruit and juice to make it a bit more sweet ~ it took me a bit to get used to but now I love it!!!

I have been thinking about changes I personally need to make to be successful and several things have come to mind.  However, I don't want to make them all at once as I've already taken on several big changes so I was thinking of doing something small each week (in addition to what I'm already doing.)  Why am I telling you this, you ask?  Well, because I thought each week I would throw something out each week that is one of those "top tricks that people do to loose weight and keep it off."

that's a fab idea!  I'm always mistaking thirst for hunger.  and i'm always dehydrated.  i'm going to make it my goal for the week to drink more water.

pennylope - 2009-10-08 7:16 AM ugh.  155/154.4/140...I've not been super accountable and been mostly eating crap since I finished my HIM a week and a half ago...and I have a marathon on sunday, so I've used that as an excuse to eat crabs out the wazoo.  but, that stops today.  I'm going to start logging food again.

Congrats to all of you that lost weight this week!  Way to go!!

At least you're heading in the right direction and know what needs to be done to achieve your goal!

I'm not sure when you are leaving for your marathon (for some reason I'm thinking it is out of town, no?!) so I want to wish you luck and wish you a HAPPY (early) Birthday!  (FYI...Penny's bday is Monday!)

Thanks!!  Yep, leave for chicago for the birthday marathon on saturday.  hoping to still eat well on my mini vacay and through bday celebrations!  (keep your fingers crossed for me )

I'm sure you'll do great because you have a goal but with that being said, I am a huge advocate of birthday cake!  You have to have birthday cake ~ especially on YOUR birthday!!!!  ENJOY and I can't wait to hear how your marathon goes!!

Have a great birthday Marathon.

You mentioned that before in another post and it got me thinking about finding a big event for my 50th Birthday...IMFL is the day after I turn 50in 2 years. Thanks for the idea!

Like others, I've never been a fan of drinking my calories.  It just doesn't seem like I've had a meal to me when I do that.  I usually end up eating something else later for the chew factor.

My favorite breakfast of choice lately has been a cup of fat-free organic yogurt with 1/4 cup Baker's Ultra Protein granola and 15g of plain whole almonds mixed into it.  It's 300 calories and really stays with me nicely until my mid-morning fruit snack.  The crunchiness of the granola and almonds really helps with that whole aforementioned "chew factor" as well.

Just want to make sure you are aware thats 16g of sugar for the carbs. I usually make my shakes with water and add fruit for a recovery shake, if its a snack then just water and whey powder. The trick is to find a protien that has a awesome flavor, otherwise you will choke it down, I have found Designer and Max Muscle to be the best tasting, so far.

Enjoy Chicago!  I ran it last year in 90+ degree heat, and this year I hear it's opposite conditions. Good luck, and enjoy Chicago!  It is such a fun city!  Have you run that marathon before?

I'll post my weigh-in results tomorrow morning.  I've been good with my workouts this week, and am tracking on The Daily Plate.  I do love that website for tracking food. I'll be happy if I'm one pound down. That's all I ask!

That sounds great!  I've been having a similar breakfast; 1/2 cup of granola with non-fat greek-style yogurt, raspberries and a sliced banana.  It's about 400 calories, so a bit larger, but it works for me.  I had a smoothie for years (soy milk, banana, frozen fruit and whey protein), and I like this much better.  I started having a glass of chocolate soy milk after AM workouts for recovery, then shifting my breakfast until I got into work.  So far, so good.  I'm getting the recovery foods I need and am able to keep hunger at bay for a bit longer in the morning.

Good morning!I weighed in, and am down exactly one pound from last week! That makes me happy considering the debauchery of all the wine, tons of food, smores, cake, and overall fun of my girls' weekend last Friday through Sunday. 160.2/159.2/145Have a great day all!

A little late to enter my details but here goes:

Oct 1st                 192lbs
Dec 25th target     175lbs

Update 1

Oct 10t                190lbs

Best of all was the fact that Sept 1st I was 201lbs, so have 11lbs down already.

So far this has been through restarting my training and eliminating sweets and alcohol from my diet. I've also reduced portion sizes generally and made a few slight changes to a lower GI diet again. My downfall has always been excess calories from snacking and so far the diet changes I have made have 99% eliminated all my snack cravings and I simply devour fruit whenever I feel the need...

Looking forward to participating int the thread and everyone achieving their goals by Christmas.

I have a great recipe for granola from when I worked at a local restaurant:

8 C rolled oats
1 1/2 C chopped pecans
1 1/2 C chopped walnuts
3/4 C chopped hazelnuts
1 C sliced almonds
1 1/4 C sunflower seeds
3 T sesame seeds
3/4 C brown sugar
1 1/2 T vanilla
1 T cinnamon
1/2 C melted butter

Preheat the oven to 350 Degrees.

Toss all ingredients together (toss really well - making sure that all ingredients are well coated). Spread out into a thin layer on two cookie sheets (I usually line the cookie sheets with parchment paper, but if you don't have parchment - a little cooking spray would be fine). Bake for 20 minutes, take out of the oven, stir (moving the stuff at the edge to the middle and the stuff in the middle to the edge), and bake for another 20 minutes.

Once all cool, you can add raisins (if you like). Store in an airtight container. Enjoy!

Yum, that sounds really tasty, too!  I'll have to give it a try some morning.
