Amber,Ten years ago I worked out with a group every day and when we swam I was the worst. I could barely do 200 yards. I took lessons and in 12 weeks it was a whole new world. I could not have figure it out with drills. The class I took we didn't use our arms for two weeks. We learned balance and rotation kicking then added arms. I had to use zoomers (little swimmer fins) to even make it 25 yards. At the of the class I swam 1500 in 30 minutes no problem. For me, I did start to feel it after a while but it was slow coming. Watch the video from Terry Laughlin of Total Immersion on Perpetual Motion Freestyle. He explain that swimming involves the most about technique and less on what shape your in. It under the swim articles of BT.

In one, a set of Dura Ace shifters
the other, 21 DVD's of 80's cartoon goodness!

New pair of pink Mizuno Wave Inspire 6's.  I'm so excited to do my long run on Saturday with my new shoes I can almost wet myself!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Santa didn't bring me a bike, but I did get 2 kitchen tables!! That's what you get when you tell each parent the same thing that you want for Christmas. One of the tables will go back and become a bike though!!

I also got an amazon gift card that I want to buy something triathlon-ish. I was thinking the Complete Triathlon Book or the Triathlon Bible, although I may just go through half.com and get them both for the same price as one! Does anyone have any books/viewing materials that really helped them when they first got started? I know that Total Immersion has been mentioned a few times as well, since swimming is my arch nemesis right now.

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope yall are enjoying time with your family and friends!

PS - I got enough wine for Christmas to get the state of Utah drunk for 3 days, so it will be a good weekend for sure. Smile

Merry Christmas everyone.  Hope everyone is enjoying a safe and happy holiday!

I got this video from my tri club --- it is about 7 minutes and a GREAT video.  If this doesn't give us all inspiration and get us moving, I don't know what will.

Enjoy

Amber871 - 2009-12-24 10:02 AM Thanks for the tips!

I think a class may help me out greatly since I can't see myself swim I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I guess patience is the key to this one.  I have seen improvements in myself, but they aren't coming as quickly as I'd like. Time to remind myself that I've only been swimming for a few weeks and not years like others in the pool. It will click someday and I will be able swim faster/longer then all of them.

Everyone has offered some great advice so far.  I've heard countless stories of beginning swimmers having that breakthrough workout where everyhting seems to just click and that monumental struggle becomes manageable.  Just keep at it.  Focus on technique, join a class, be persistent and consistent, and one of these days you will surprise the hell out of yourself during one of your workouts.

I got a bunch of smartwool socks and some neoprene shoe covers for my bike shoes.  Super excited about biking in the cold now!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I am currently on Vacation in Cosa Rica with very limited internet access and my training consists mainly of hard mountain hikes. I brought my running shoes and will try to get some running in on the beach for the last half of the vacation. I will be back in the states on New years eve and I will be more active here from 1st of January. Now I am off to the hotel pool for some beathing exercises, that I am sure will convince theother guests that I am nuts.

/Christer

I'm slightly jealous Christer! Enjoy your vacation!!

I read part of a TI book on Google Books (great resource for reading bits of books!) and I watched videos of people swimming using TI technique on YouTube. I am now so excited to go swimming on tomorrow.

Anyone have any good New Year's Resolutions or goals for 2010?

I'm sure on New Years day I'll swear off drinking (as I usually end up doing every 1st of Jan.)

But my resolution is to become worthy of the bike I'm building.

I swore off drinking yesterday. Christmas (actually, the day after) kicked me hard and my stomach still isn't 100%. I'm thinking I will stay sober until May 1st. Then after my first tri is under my belt I will celebrate with a small amount of booze and another tattoo. Cool

Rewards are great motivation!

I have a couple of New Year's goals:

1.  Eat a healthier diet
2.  Lose another 15-20lbs before my May race
3.  Get healthy running (shin splints, arrggghhh)
4.  Get a new job so I can buy an awesome tri bike next year, 2011 that is --- obviously not the only reason

Let's see, my main goal is to get healthy enough to run again.

Also, I need to reverse the effects of the 4 days of binge eating I just finished.  Dang my mom and her cooking!

Haha!  I swear off drinking a good 5-6 times a year.  One of these days I'll follow through.

Still need to make a decision on what cockpit to go with...and how high end I want to go. So many good choices...maybe ebay or the forums will drop something great into my lap.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas.  I got a Garmin 305!  However, I also left my new-ish running shoes at the gym on Xmas eve, and they're gone.

Back to biking this week; spin classes and a trainer class at local bike shop, space permitting.  Hopefully back to swimming next week.  Unstructured for now, just get in work when I can.  I'll get on a plan mid-February.

Wow took your shoes.  That's low.

A new Garmin 305 sounds great.

I got the Garmin 310 XT (mainly for the vibration alarms since I can't hear little beeps)  Been playing with it all weekend.  Soooo many setting options great for flexibility but definately a little learning curve.  Added speed and cadence sensor to the bike. Going to spend the next month figuring out my training zones.

I was hoping they would end up in lost and found, but its still my fault for leaving the shoes behind.  The Garmin's have so many features.  Vibrating alert is pretty cool.  I've got a computer on my road  bike now, so I'll wait and mount this to the Tri bike I'll someday purchase at some point in the future.

Let me know what you think of it once you've done some more extensive testing.  I have a 405 right now that is serving it's purpose, but have been contemplating the upgrade anyway.

So far so good.  I give an update in a couple of weeks.  The big difference between the 405 and the 310xt is the 310 has 20 hour battery life but is much bigger in size.
