dinabean - 2009-12-28 9:22 PM Hope everyone is making it through the holidays on track.  I missed too many days, but got back out there this morning, and was so glad that I did.  Had a nice run in my old neighborhood (it was cold!).  I have never, in my life, gone for a run or any sort of exercise out of my parents' front door.  Glad to have made this change in my life.

Got back out there >>> missed too many days

ANY progress is an accomplishment! And it's so great to do something positive you've never done before.

Something you should definitely not eat: fresh termites with the wings pulled off. It's a delicacy here. Then again, the prospect of eating those might make weight loss easier

All the best with your goals! Do you have specific ways to address your eating (like, as mentioned before, substitutions)? Food plan, anything like that? Eating healthy = wonderful and challenging. Make it as easy as possible for yourself!

I think if you dipped the termites in chocolate.....wait, that's not going to help with the goal....

I'm open to any suggestions! I need to eat more fruits and vegetables. I really need to find good, portable substitutions for lunch and snacks. I cut most of the fast food out of my diet a couple of years ago and that was pretty easy. I think this is going to be a little more work. Right now my biggest problem is I like deserts.

I haven't posted in a while.  Between the holidays and my daughter and I getting an infection it has been kind of hard the last couple of days.  But here is the latest with my triathlons goals.

I have to put "real" running on a hold until I can get to a doctor and have my shins looked at.  I have had chronic shin splints for 9 years now, and the military doctors that I have haven't been able to do anything.  So I'm going to Texas next week and hope to have a doctor look at them and tell me what they think.

My husband and I are planning on doing IM Coz in 2011.  I am planning on working on sprint distances and overall fitness in 2010, while my husband works on his bike and run.  Then with a little bit of planning and being extremley organized in 2011 we plan on making a family trip out of IM Coz.  Oh did I mention that our daughter will almost be 3 then.  It'll be tough but I think we can do it.

TriAya - 2009-12-28 1:34 PM Congrats on your race, Bethie Love! When do we get the race report?

And Manatees, please forgive the trip down memory lane, but these are the posts that started the name ...

HCS5QA - 2007-12-08 5:39 PM Yup this is going to be fun and we seem to have some great people in this group. Now get out there and train! Sorry my military motivator side came out for a second , I'm the mentoree not the mentoror.  LOL

ALL of us are the manatees ... wait, mentorees as well as mentors.

LOL - thank goodness you cleared that up!  I wasn't sure about becoming a manatee - I mean they're cute and all, but...................

awwww Yanti - thanks for the little trip down memory lane - hopefully the current manatees don't mind a bit of history

not sure if i'll do a race report - it's a winter race series, i'm treating it more as a training run than a race

holy buckets it was a tough run!

hmmm, though - maybe i should do a little race report after each one in the series - might be a good way to track my progress

i take a big thing of berries - blueberries, rasberries, strawberries, blackberries, whatever they have on hand and is the most affordable

i mix it with yogurt and i eat it all morning long - it's sweet and i get some of both my dairy and my fruit in

i have to admit i'm not a big sweets person (give me a bag of fritos, and i'm a lost woman - lol!)

in the afternoon i munch on a little jello pudding snack - my personal favorite is the chocolate and vanilla swirl - i do like the caramel as well

hope this helps a little

shin splints is not something i've dealt with much - i hope you can find relief

Yanti or some others in the group may have some insight - take care!

Have been MIA suffering from the blues but today my friend dragged me by the hair and we did a 10K trail run.  Like straight up trail run.  The sun was shining and it wasn't too cold.  It was harder than anything I've ever done.  Right now I cannot feel anything below the wais but I like it!

I'm trying to think positive instead of being miserable all the time. I'm having a hard time dealing with being assaulted back in July, plus I quit smoking and have gained almost 25lbs,but of course my lungs are slowly healing so that's the plus in all of this.

I filled out an entry form for La Jolla, San Diego 1 mile swim next September.  Cannot wait!  Going to spend 5 days there with my friend Shannon *Who dragged me out today* her husband and also my husband! Should be fun.  Wish I could go now.

What's everyone's NYE plans? Got any?

I know it sounds silly and trite, but one day at a time Lynne

you are a beautiful and wonderful soul - you are stronger than you know

awesome job on filling out the entry for La Jolla

how wonderful that you have such a great friend who knows you well enough to drag you out by your hair

as for my NYE - i'll be spending it with my son and his friend, who is in from Omaha (where we used to live)

we're going to take the train to NYC and stroll around times square, have lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe and come back to the apartment - i think i'm making tacos, but we'll see what they want that night

i'm looking forward to it

I don't know if you can be picky about your fruit in Eastern PA, but for dessert, even canned fruit if it's in juice is better than like a brownie or something ... Tootsie Pops/Rolls? ... the little mini Musketeers bars ... sugar free Jell-O, yum! ...

Do you have Trader Joe's or Whole Foods out there? There are really good packaged lunches (I favored the Indian ones, like with a chickpeas curry and basmati rice) that were low fat high fiber and good for you! Except the white rice, but whatever ... baby steps!

There were such great RRs out of IM Coz ... seems like a wonderful race. Warm, but wonderful!

Shin splints ... always a symptom of a cause you need to find! Sorry no luck with the military docs. Have you thought about going to a podiatrist (particularly one who works with runners)? Sometimes it is a foot thing, and also, if you've never had a pair of custom orthotics, that is really important!

Wise to put running on hold for now, and very slow buildup when you get back into it. Meanwhile, Brisk walking and elliptical can do amazing things for you. Have you thought about aquajogging? That is great stuff too, and can also ease the transition back into running...

i know you've had some real struggles lately ... thanks for posting and hanging in there and doing good things for yourself.

Darling Lynne. You are very plucky! You face a lot of challenges and then pick yourself right back up and keep going ... it's been amazing to watch you these last few years.

Congrats on the crazy uphill run! Wow! Sometimes you just gotta get out and do stuff like that. Thinking positive helps and moving positive helps even more

NYE I'm working a Michael Franti concert that my sister is putting on.

Beth, Yanti - Thanks for the ideas. It really is about subsitutions. I remember a quote from a seminar on setting goals, the guy was talking about losing weight and said "I never ate anything by mistake". Except for a stray bug here or there, I have to agree.

Reaching for the fruit and yogurt instead of the brownie is exactly the type of thing I need to do. Like exercise, it's all about momentum. The hardest part is getting started.

Cortney - I had shin splints when I first started running. I'm sure they were nothing compared to what you have but it still felt like someone took a metal pipe to my lower legs. Like others have already said, talk to your doctor about alternative exercises.

And why is there a brownie even available?

This is all stuff you know (and I know!) and we both need to be reminded of ... it's about TIPPING THE BALANCE toward the EASIER PATH.

If the fruit and yogurt is more accessible than the brownie ... guess what you'll probably eat. Surround yourself with good snackages and insofar as possible remove all the not-so-good ones so you have to go out of your way to obtain them ... and then when you do they really are more of a special treat. As they should be, not a usual reward.

Like regular working out, eating more of the right stuff TRAINS my body and taste buds to prefer it. It's wonderful because it ultimately is self-rewarding.

I play mind games with myself, too. Like, "Yanti, if you eat that apple, then you can go to the corner store and get the Kit Kat." Well, by the time I have eaten the apple I'm full and satisfied and it had some sweetness, and I don't want the bother and expense of getting the Kit Kat.

Art - You can use the "Just for today..." idea (if it's weird to feel like you're borrowing from AA, you could say it's from reiki ). Then, if you slip up, it's not like you RUINED EVERYTHING. You can let it go and start again tomorrow.

I think I posted earlier that I use hard candy for riding out cravings. You can get chocolatey ones or fruity ones or minty ones or whatever you like, suck on a couple, and then you've had the taste you want and a little bit of the sugar without eating something big. (This might not work if you've got jaws of steel and crunch hard candies like they're potato chips, haha. My brother has such jaws, so the hard candy idea led to him eating a whole bag at a time. He switched to chewing gum instead and did well with that. Chewing sugarless gum is good for your teeth too.)

No NYE plans here. What should I do (besides work out)? It's gotta be something cheap.

Of course you're right, I do need to re-train my body to prefer better food and as you said, I just need to find ways to make that the easier choice. To be honest, I really haven't made much of an effort to do that before now.

I have tried aquajogging.  And was bored out of my mind.  However, I did feel like I got a good workout after being in the pool for 30 minutes.  I would do it right now, but there is only one pool in my area and it is closed until March/April.

Does anyone know if rowing can help with the swim?

For what it's worth, I kind of take the opposite approach with eating in some ways! sorry to play devil's advocate..  I love to cook (and eat!), and I try to enjoy everything I eat, so if I don't want it, I don't eat it... and if there's something I really want for example chocolate cake, I have it.  But I try to be mindful of a few things... i.e why am I eating, am I actually hungry, portion size, mindful eating ie actually savouring what it is I'm devouring!  All that being said, I also do try to mostly make fresh and healthy stuff as much as possible, (although I'm a shocker for starting the day with a couple of coffees and not much else - a hangover from my junior doctor days I think..)  But I do agree that the more fresh and healthy food you eat, the more you appreciate and crave better food..
I'm not an expert, but I feel there's something in the human psyche that appreciates being nourished rather than deprived, and the love of food is a survival trait!  anyway it kind of works for me, lost about 44 lb this year, don't think there was a day that I didn't eat a little chocolate..
just putting it out there as something to think about...
I don't know that I believe that willpower is all of the answer, more that you have to rewire your brain to want less and want different things.

All that said, I need to rewire my brain to want less chocolate and more fresh fruit still!  maybe my new years resolution..

keep well everyone

Hi Manatees!

I have some wonderful news - Lynn (lmscozz) a member of our previous Manatees is going to be joining our group.

I've updated the table in my blog to include Lynn as well as my 'new identity' - (i'm no longer lastcall2003 - details in my blog for anyone who is interested)

I'm sure she'll be stopping by sometime in the next day or so to post an intro

Welcom Lynn!

Cortney:  i'm not sure if rowing specifically will help with the swim, it would seem that it would because of the upper body work - i do know there are some good dryland exercises that can help, i'll see what i can dig up and post some links

Meylssa:  we love it when people play the devils advocate...there is always more than one way to look at something and it's always great to hear what works for everyone.  i agree with much of what you said - i do think that humans need to enjoy food and not feel deprived. whenever i've approached weight loss and felt deprived i've been unsuccessful in the long run.  for me it's all about balance - i find the more i eat healthy foods, the less i crave the junk, but if i want a treat i have it and i don't feel bad about it, i simply enjoy it

It really takes all of this stuff combined. I know I have to change my eating habits. That's going to take some willpower, getting rid of the bad stuff and having better choices handy. I also know that eating a piece of cake once in a while isn't going to kill me. I just need to make it a lot less frequent than it is now.

Thanks to Beth, Lisa and Yanti for welcoming me into the group. Well, Yanti, you haven't officially welcomed me, but I know you will. Perhaps, even, with one of those generous melon presses.

A bit about me -- 2010 will be my third year of triathlon. While I was athletic in h.s. and college (basketball mostly) I was sporadic with workouts after college until I lost about 30 pounds in 2001 (via Weight Watchers where I now work part time). I was not a swimmer, but kind of knew how to swim, I could run, but not more than 2 miles at a time and I hadn't really ever really ridden a road bike and didn't even know clip-in pedals existed. After I lost some friends to cancer (breast) I realized that life is short and if you want to do something in life you've got to just go for it, or Just Do It, as Nike says (and apparently Tiger was a believer as well)   Anyway, triathlon was something I thought was really intriguing and perhaps out of my reach, but what the heck, why not tri? So, started swimming, just 20 minutes at a time and often flipping on my back and bought a bike and those weird clip-in shoes and pedals, started running more and got a great chiropractor to help get me so I could run more than 2 miles without hip pain.

Fast forward to 2010 and so far I've done maybe a dozen or so spirint tris, 5 half marathons (including the La Jolla one Triathlynne will do), a couple of olys, a HIM and a full marathon, which I just did on Dec. 6th. Along the way for tri training I discovered that I really LOVE running. Marathon or anything longer than a sprint tri was never on my radar, but somehow I trained more, got more fit and had some great help from BT peeps and my local cycling club, running groups and tri club as well to some degree. I'm very fortunate that I live in what's often called the triathlon capitol, the San Diego area. We can pretty much s/b/r outdoors all year round.

This year I plan to do a half marathon 2/14, an oly 3/7, the Oceanside 70.3 on 3/28 and my second marathon on 5/1 if the stars all align.

On the personal front, I'm married (21 yrs.) have one son, 14, a dog and three kitties. Managing the homefront, a pt job and tri training has had its challenges, but I guess that's what makes life interesting.

As far as weight, I've been up and down much of my life, but after losing the weight 9 years ago I'm happy to say I've been able to keep it off basically using the principles of Weight Watchers, not depriving, moderation, monitoring and focusing on fueling the body not just feeding it. I find there's always something new to learn about nutrition and triathlon and endurance sports.

So glad to be called a manatee again and I'm looking forward to a great tri season and spending the first 3 months with all of you fine people.

Lynn Happy Early New Year!!
