Kath2163 - 2010-04-09 9:50 PM Hey Guys and Gals,
...and the bike was worth more then my car...

That's a classic Colorado trademark though.  My one bike is worth the same as one of my cars (a Jeep... another typical CO thing), but the car I drive around most (it doubles the Jeep's gas mileage) is actually worth 1/3rd as much as the bike I put in it.

Just thought I'd share this.  I'm sponsored by MyAthlete.biz (meaning they let me use their device for free to help promote them).  But it's a little GPS device that goes on your race number belt so people online at home or on their iPhones/Blackberries can track your location during a race.  The founder/owner has actually done quite a few Ironman races and has even qualified and done Kona before.

So, if anyone happens to want to see how my half marathon goes tomorrow morning you can track me here: http://www.trackmyathlete.com/VEmap.aspx?name=050083  The race starts at 9am (Mountain Time... 7am Eastern) and I'm hoping to do a 1:35... we'll see how it goes.  Oh, and Kathleen, you can obviously use that to find me before/after the race too if you have internet on a phone   I'm bib #917.

re: 55 mile run weeks.

that actually wasn't me -- I've been doing just about 50.  I recently have abandoned the 3:1 work:recovery thing and now do in the mid 40's each week for greater overall volume (with no "recovery week" per se).

My IM plan has me scheduled to run 175 miles a month in Feb-April, and then drops back to a run maintenace phase for a big push on the bike in May and June.

phxphotog - 2010-04-10 12:22 PM Did 40 miles on the bike this morning. This was the longest ride to date. I think the 56 for the 1/2 IM will be attainable by Oct. I just need to keep building distance and start to work on more time in aero. After my next 2 tri's I'm going to go get a bike fit. Haven't had the money lately because everything else has cost more than I expected. I'm feeling good on the bike today but after about 35 miles my hands were starting to hurt and my right foot started to fall asleep. My HR is down about 18 BPM on avg while my speed has gone up about 1mph.

Tomorrow I have my 1st OWS. Hoping to do about a mile or so. We'll see how cold the water is.

Maybe a nice hike w/ Miki (My wife Michelle) this afternoon. Will need sunscreen!!!!!!!!!!!

If your getting in 40 miles now 56 will be no problem by October.   With regard to your foot going to sleep, I have experienced this as well.  Try standing up every so often to take pressure of your sit area, also try to wiggle your toes every so often.  The biggest help for me was getting a seat which had a large cutout to relieve nerve pressure.  For me it seems like the nerve bundle that you tend to sit on causes the numbness in my feet.  I now use an adamo race seat, but other cut out seats can work just as well.  Hope this helps.

Kath2163 - 2010-04-09 11:50 PM Hey Guys and Gals,
Have any of you switched from a road bike to a tri bike and if so do you feel that it was worth it?  When all was said and done,  the money paid,  the bike fit perfect and a few rides under your belt did anyone regret or second guess their decision?  I have a road bike with aero bars that has served me well for the most part.  Despite this, I have started looking into tri bikes and test road my first one earlier this week. I went to another LBS this afternoon hoping to ride two different brands but they didn't have either one in my size (not good planning on their part ). I know that there is no right or wrong answer to this but it is something that crossed my mind so I thought I would ask.
I can say that I enjoyed the short ride I had on the tri bike on Monday. However it was very very windy, the wheels were deep ( I think that is the terminology) and the bike was worth more then my car (of course that was the one bike they had in my size) so much of my focus was keeping the bike from being knocked over due to the wind hitting the wheels. The last thing I needed to have happen was to damage that bike. I think what it would come down to for me is if I found a tri bike to be more comfortable especially with the longer distances that I am going to be doing.

I would enjoy hearing anyone's thoughts.
Thanks!

Disclaimer, I own 3 bikes. 1 road and 2 tri bikes. Road bikes are great for any distance of triathlon. Clip-on aerobars can help as they help your aerodynamics and give you another position to be in to avoid hands going numb on the hoods of a road bike. The main difference with a triathlon bike is that the geometry of the seat angle is more suited for being in the aero position. Some people feel as though it is impossible to fully be in the correct position on a road bike in aero. This is the main issue. If you plan on being in the aero position for long periods of time then a tribike is probably better. A tribike is never mandatory, but has the plus of being designed to be ridden in aero. A road bikes principle design is to be ridden on the hoods. BTW I love my tribike much more than my road bike. I put about 90% of my miles on it. Hope this helps

Yes, thanks!
So, I just came back from spending a good three+ hours doing the tri bike search and trying to find the right size.  Based on the availability, bike store and staff I am leaning towards a Specialized Transition.  I know a little bit about components but not much. One of the bikes is a $1000.00 more then the other(not a small chunk of change for me).  While not thrilled about the color of either of them, I like the Transition Expert (more expensive one)more then the Transition Comp though I have started to warm up to it a bit after spending so much time with it today.
I am sure that the Expert is worth the $1000.00 and I am open to purchasing it but I need some advice/opinion.
Here are the  links to the two bikes.

I certainly don't need either bike but I think I might enjoy my riding more.

Thoughts?

The bike differences that I can see is the components and the wheel sets. Is it worth the $1000 for Ultegra over 105 and cosmic elite over aksium wheels? I have a mix of components on my bike so I couldn't really tell you what is better. I do like the black and white bike though and have always like the transitions styling. I have an allez elite and I like it a lot. It's a road bike that I have clip on aerobars on. Still haven't done the seat post and stem yet though.

Did they feel any different? I think feel has to be 80% of the buying process.

Let us know if you pull the trigger.

I don't carry my phone during races, but I do if I'm out on a long run just in case something happens.

I was just thinking maybe you had a husband or friend that would be there that wasn't running who'd have a phone or hold your stuff for you.  That's all.  As for being "long gone" probably not, I have a lot of other friends doing it as well so I'll be around cheering them on after I finish.

I've been swimming a lot lately with the pull buoy because I think it will imitate the floating of the wetsuit. I hope that is a good thing to do. I actually swim better and faster with the pull buoy.

My husband does this too...just keep an eye on your shoulders.  You won't want any overuse injuries to crop up.

I had a rt shoulder injury when I first started swimming. "Thankfully" I got sick - didn't work out for about of week and now my shoulder is fine. I just don't push too much and just let my body glide to get my distance. If I want to get faster, I'll have to spend some time with my Master's program.

Congrats to you wife Fred, that's awesome.  But really? you made her drive home after her first race?

As for me, I set a new PR for the half marathon distance.  1:36, beating my old PR by 7 minutes that I had set at down at sea-level.... but I was all hopped up on caffeine this time ;-)

Couple of things. Had my 1st OWS today and I had 2 freak out moments. On the first lap around the cove I turned and looked in to shore when I was all the way out. Don't know why I stopped swimming and looked back but I did and I started to hyperventilate. Then I started to bee-line for the shore which made it worse. The 2nd lap I made it all the way to when I was headed in and when I looked to sight, I saw the shore again and panicked. I turned over and floated for a minute or so and continued in. I'm going back out on Thur and hopefully my mind will be right.

When I hurt my shoulder swimming was the 1st swim I did while tri training. I swam maybe 300 yds total and my form and everything was bad. I also did a lot of breaststroke which always put more strain on my shoulders. Freestyle is actually a lot less stress on my shoulders. It took almost 2 weeks of not swimming for it to heal.

Yeah i am doing 100% of my pool swimming with one as well. I hyperextended my knee a couple weeks ago, and while i could run and bike pain free, swimming hurt a lot. SO i am using the pull buoy all the time. I have tried a few times swimming without it and my form drops and my effort to maintain my pace increases

PennState - 2010-04-11 3:22 PM How did everyone else's day/races go?

I took the day off. I hurt my groin a couple of days ago and it only hurts when i run. I think i pushed too hard on my long run the other day..and am now paying the consequences for it.

On another note i got re-fit on my bike on sat morning. The fitter made a LOT of changes..which kind of shocked me bc i had been fitted 2 other times. All of the changes he made were ones that i was thinking needed to be done...but it was just very shocking to see how different he set up my bike vs the other guy that fit me.
