Good job Brian.  Thats the frustrating part about MTB racing, some things are just out of your control.  You are correct though, you need to sprint for those single track sections.  Nothing is worse than getting stuck behind the clydesdale when others got through ahead of you.  However, once you get stuck, relax.  Most likely you won't get around if on singletrack, so take the time to recover, lower your HR, fuel, then pass on the opening.  Also, as you learned, leave space.  Don't ride up on their rear tire!  You need to give yourself reaction time for when they do something stupid like unclipping and walking.

I'm glad to see you upbeat about today.  Mark up the day to lessons learned and a good day of riding.  Out here on the Left Coast, we've had nothing but rain while you stole our beautiful weather.

Pedals:  I'm on Crank brothers Candy sl on my mtb, SPD SL on my roadie.  I ordered SPD SL for my new tri bike I have on order too.  I'm changing to egg beaters on the MTB as soon as my new sidi shoes come.  I have problems getting in and out the candy's.  The SPD SL's aren't an issue.  Mainly because once you do MTB riding and have to get in and out in a pinch, getting out for the stop light you see coming from a mile away isn't that difficult.  I actually don't mind if my road pedals are set real stiff to get out of.

Good morning everyone.  Another wet day for us in California.  Darn, I got a race this weekend and I haven't been able to get out on the trails.  The soil around here is clayish, so any amount of rain just makes a mess.

Here's a really good article about the importance of constant exhalation while swimming:

http://www.swimsmooth.com/exhalation.html

Pretty sure I'm guilty of this:

"After inhaling and returning their face to the water, most people hold that breath for at least one stroke, if not two. Shortly before their next inhalation they exhale very late into the water, often finishing that exhalation into the air when they've turned to breathe in."

I'm going to try and incorporate the sinking drill along with some sloooow 50s to warm up today.

QOTD:  When swimming, do you currently breathe bilaterally?

Yes.  It took some effort, but it feels natural now.  However, I only site breathe off of my stronger side.

I read that too.  Right before the swim coach at masters class pointed out I was doing this.  LOL  Most people don't even know they are doing it.  Along with the sink drill in the read, my coach just had me do some easy laps and just concentrate on exhaling instead of inhaling.  It was amazing how much effortless swimming felt when you worried more about the exhale!  It really helps you relax.

I have Crank Brothers Candy pedals on my old city/road mountain bike, and Egg Beaters on my good mountain bike.  I can't feel any difference, however I did have to clearance a little bit of rubber from the sole of my shoes so that the shoe soles wouldn't hang up on the platform of the Candy pedal.  Something to look at anyway if you're having problems.  They are very simple pedals, not much to really go wrong or wear out, other than the shoe cleats themseles.

thanks, I'm sure you're right.  I think I hang up on the rubber sole and my shoes have too much flex in them.  I'll keep both pedals  and try them with my sidi spiders when they come.  I went and tried them on for size this weekend and am going to order them today

No.  I've tried, it's very unnatural.  Since I only have access to a pool 2x/week, I figure I'm better off working on swim stroke issues for now.

If you can find time, read the article I provided the link to about exhalation.  I was amazed at how bad unilateral brething will break your stroke down.  Also, at the bottom of the article I believe there is a link to bilateral breathing.  Their emphasis is if you're not bilateral breathing, then you should be starting today.  Form will follow.

I kept having problems with the Candy ti pedals.  I broke two platforms off of the spindle.  Finally, I gave up on them and went to Look.  And, yes, depending on your shoe, you will have to shave some of the sole to allow for clean entry-exit.

Recovery Question:

I raced yesterday.  I was planning on swimming and running tonight.  As a MTB'er ideally you'd want to recover completely before any more training.  But being a triathlete I find it hard to fit in all the training I need unless I do things almost every day.  So is doing the other disciplines ok on a recovery day from the other?

You are definately fine with swimming, as it involves different muscle groups.  As for the running, if you're sore avoid it.  If you feel fine, then you should be ok to do some running, just don't be doing speedwork.

If it was me, I would play it safe and pass on the run then.  I would probably swim and do some form of stretch, yoga, foam rolling, etc.

My thoughts...  hmm, it makes a lot of sense.  I guess I'll give it a try for a few weeks.  I *think* I'm pretty good about exhaling right away, but I'll pay more attention to it next time and see.  I'm sure I hold my breath more than I think.  Bilateral certainly makes a lot of sense in terms of keeping the stroke symmetrical.  I know I definately roll much more on my breathing side right now than on my non-breathing side.

One thing I know for sure, I have a slow turnover when swimming.  I would need to speed up my stroke if I want to go more than one stroke between breaths.  Though I guess I could just practice one lap right, one lap left side breathing.

I know its frustrating, but I'm sure you've heard, sometimes you have to step back to move forward.

One drill to get comfortable with the longer duration between breathes is a hypoxic drill.  You use a pull buoy for 150 and breathe every 3, 5, and 7 strokes by 50.  7 is tough.  If you can work through these, 3 starts to feel very natural.

Heading to the gym in the hotel in a few minutes for a swim/exercise bike/treadmill workout.  Not as nice as being outside, but at least I can burn off some energy after the day in the office.

Happy Monday,

Hope everyone kicked off the week in style.  First day back to school for the kids so this morning was hectic but I settled back into my routine once everyone was out the door.  Rain was here this morning so workout(s) were Masters Swim followed by 3 mile TM run.

Swim program today was:
   ~ Warm-up = Deck stretch / 6 X 100s 2 swim / 2 kick / 2 pull (3 sets of crunches between)
   ~ Sprint Set I = 2 X 25 / 50 easy / 3 X 25 / 50 easy / 4 X 25 / 50 easy / 3 X 25 / 50 easy / 2 X 25 / 50 easy
   ~ Sprint Set II = 2 X 50 / 50 easy / 3 X 50 / 50 easy / 2 X 50 / 50 easy
   ~ Cool-down 6 X 50 easy (w/ 3 sets of crunches between)

AOTD:  I am new to ‘technical’ swimming and at this time am only breathing on my right side.  In our OWSs I have already learned the benefits of bilateral breathing but at this stage “I’m crawling before I’m walking”.  I’ll add bi-lat breathing later after I start getting a grasp on everything else.

Tim - Double sided entry was my motivator for SPEEDPLAYS on my TT bike.  I should have them by next weekend.  SPEEDPLAY is a local San Diego Company and I like to support the local blood.  Depending on trail conditions and length of ride… on my MB, I switch between CB Candy -or- 50/50 Mallets (w/ my Rennie 5.10s).  Thanks for the exhalation article.  I’m a big fan of Mr. Smooth and wish I read the article before.  I m guilty of a brief one or two stroke breath-hold after breathing and need to break the habit.

Muelen- CONGRATS on your race.  Even with the traffic jam, sounds like you enjoyed yourself.

Weather is clearing so tomorrow morning I'm planning to do the Spring Sprint Course (as was the plan today). So far it's just me.

Have a great evening.
